Polar Bear Blog – Brown Polar Bears

the theory is kind of based on polar bears being stranded on the island and brown bears swimming across the channel (a very short distance from the mainland). But, I can’t figure out why the polar bears would not just swim away themselves… they are way better swimmers than brown bears.

Its a little disappointing that these findings are being portrayed, yet again, as a ‘negative’ for polar bears. “Because they still retain the ability to hybridize with brown bears, they’re still pretty environmentally adaptable, which is kind of a shame for polar bears.” That doesn’t even make sense… how is that a shame?

I mean this study kind of shows that if ice really does rapidly disappear, isolated populations of polar bears will likely survive… if the DNA is still there, there is still the chance for a species to return with the ice.
