A piece by Sibley on TNC site

"The Debate over the Ivory-billed Woodpecker", by David Sibley, is now available here:
The Ivory-billed Woodpecker has affected so many lives in so many ways that it would be unethical for me to stand by silently while decisions were based on information that I believed was flawed.

Kudos to The Nature Conservancy for stepping up and acknowledging the differing opinions and scienfic debate by publishing an essay by Sibley.

Interestingly, Cornell's own "All About Birds" site says this about the PIWO, under Conservation Status:
"Pileated Woodpecker populations declined greatly with the clearing of the eastern forests. The species rebounded in the middle 20th century, and has been increasing slowly but steadily in most of its range. Only in Arkansas do numbers seem to be going down."
Hmmm ... no doubt they are being displaced by the IBWO!
