David says, "We decided we wanted to raise money for the welfare of a bird, and of course the first thing that came to mind was the ivory-bill project!"

I think this is great. How often do you find kids that want to help out with conservation and go bird watching all day? This is a neat story. Of course, these kids are just following what the adults are saying and the IBWO has received a lot of attention. Even though I don't believe the IBWO exists, I hope CLO will use these funds wisely.
I've been reading Voodo Science by Robert Park that you suggested. He makes a good case that some science fiascos last only a short time because they don't last long enough for an industry to build up around them.
Which just reinforces the fact the secrecy at the beginning of this IBWO fiasco was probably especially harmful. It allowed USF&WS, TNC etc to build up the infrastructure around the myth of the birds existence. Making it extra hard for Sibley, Jackson, et al to pop the bubble of this foolishness.
And is probably why we will be talking about Brinkley for the next year. Yikes!

Do you know that "gullible" is not in the dictionary?

Actually, I just checked and it's in...oh, you!
