Two years ago the ornithological world was rocked by the announcement of the Ivory billed Woodpecker's rediscovery in Arkansas on the Cache River. Much closer to home — on our own Cache River in Johnson County — birding sleuth Jesse Gilsdorf believes he's located the birds again! Sightings, tell-tale scalings and recorded calls of what can only be Ivory-bills makes this fascinating article very provocative reading.

The tag line for this article in the table of contents is:
"For an extinct bird, this one sure gets around"
Just like death can be the best career move for washed up performers, extinction obviously can increase sightings of some species.
Extant birds just don't provide the same drama as those that are extinct.
Dear Cletus,
We've already endured the annoucement of 9 pairs and multiple sightings from Hillcrow. What makes you think we are going to get all scardy over some rumors?
Sorry. Please try again.
Somebody make it stop! I don't care if it's by getting proof positive of the bird's existence or by publicly slamming all crappy evidence. Just make it stop!!!
Just make it stop!!!
You get that feeling too. Like the searchers are in the Twilight Zone and we are watching an episode? Or that we are dreaming except that we are watching their nightmare instead of our own?
You couldn't make this story up. Grown men and women chasing ghosts.
And when I see those earnest young interns sitting in front of a display of sound data.....day after day....week after week...man do interns get the sh*t jobs!
And meanwhile Bobby, Tim, and Gallagher working over time to "correct" wikipedia....
It's sad and hilarious at the same time.
'just make it stop"?? Make it stop??

"birding sleuth Jesse Gilsdorf "
Remember his posting of a perfect Black Vulture picture on Birdforum with the tag..."can anyone tell me what this is?"
birding sleuth indeed!
Too many lawyers who can't use a field guide.
From Gilsdorf's report (online):
"I have made several searches for the IBW have occurred[sic]..."
"The next major hurdle is the lack of standards against wish[sic] to measure the clues"
"Since the area reasonable[sic] met the described IBW habitat..."
Again I ask, why is there such a strong correlation between ivory-sightings and illiteracy? Reports by TBs would be more believable if written using proper grammar and syntax. Sloppy writers are likely sloppy observers. I hope Jesse edits his legal documents more carefully.
"This includes observed red heads..."
And why are so many TBs incapable of citing common names of bird species?
For skeptics you folks sure do like to keep the ivory-bill topic going and manage to dig up some of the most obscure items about ‘em. Seems more reasonable to bury a dead horse rather than to keep beating it. I think you folks are in reality Ivory-bill believers who are secretly, longingly, looking for that one bit of evidence proving positive the evidence of their existence so you can then come out of the closet.
