That this icon may still haunt vast recesses in our state -- recently dead pine stands, swamps, bottomland oak and sweetgum forests -- thrills me more than the Easter Bunny himself caught on film.

"Without "untamed" wilderness and such alluring Lorelei as Campephilus principalis, my state would be boring, if not stone-dead."
Well, if that is your criteria then your state is stone-dead. And maintains its long-term reputation for being the home of scam artists and the naive public they prey on.

"the delicacy of keeping rare species alive"
The key is not to listen to the bad skeptics who cause extinction
"the original adventurous spirit that founded the United States"
Lewis and Clark, Davey Crockett, and... Fishcrow?
"thrills me more than the Easter Bunny himself"
I like the Easter Bunny better because unlike the IBWO his(!) eggs are chocolate
"Given that these are secretive"
Obviously true UNLESS you have actually seen any of its extant relatives
"even a Girl Scout might stumble upon one"
or even better a robot Girl Scout
"evokes Joseph Conrad"
how about a movie: IBWO Apocalypse Now?
"Without...Campephilus...my state would be boring"
You'd still have your skunk apes
