The Fishcrow method of documenting bird sightings with bad paintings seems to be spreading.

It seems that Imperial Woodpecker TBs are just as illiterate as their IBWO TB colleagues.

Bill over at Soggy Bottom had an interesting (and somewhat light-hearted) post here concerning the inability of searchers to nail down this bird. The most interesting quote, if true and not a joke, is:

"We have no explanation for the 'kent-like' sounds that are still being picked up by ARUs and human observers on a regular basis. No one has come up with an identity for the source of these sounds. I'm even told stories off-the-record of people standing around the tree from which the calls are emanating, still without being able to find the source!"

If that last sentence is true, it surely blows a hole in the hypothesis that the calls are coming from an 18" high black and white bird that is "unmistakable".

That painting looks like a dying bird falling from its perch. Bang!

Great! Now even veterinarians are seeing big extinct black-and-white birds.

And he's a painter too! Who would have thought it?!

Dear Greg Hayes-

--please define "near future" (e.g. 1 year, 3 years, 8 years, 60 years?)

--"Apprehensible" sounds more like True Believer behavior

--a bird record can't be "more" or "less" within the "historical range." Either it was or it wasn't. Can we assume that your encounter WASN'T (judging by the apparent lowland forest in your illustration and the presence of Pale-billed Woodpeckers and Orange-breasted Flacons)?

--In the future, please limit yourself to raptor biology, and we hope that you know raptors better than you know large woodpeckers....

I just returned from Belize and saw a woodpecker double the size of the pale billed. Flew across pine forest north of Mayan ruin in central western part of country. Maybe the veterinarian was right! I don't want the wrath he received from the Nelson group so just going to pass on any further info as probably will do fine in area viewed as already saved by Belize government. Just leave it alone

Your site is singularly execrable.
