I'm a little confused on "close" sightings; that is, sightings that "probably" are IBWO's. Either it's a positive ID, or it's nothing at all. At this point, that's the only way to operate, as we are trying to establish the existence of a species considered extinct. Nothing less than positive ID's should even be published. So far we have ... nothing at all.
Same old story. Glimpsed views, long views only by non-birders, fuzzy video, intriguing kent calls and double knocks. I guess to some, piles of bad evidence are equivalent to one piece of usable evidence.
FV meant a serious LA searcher in comparison to the average anonymous poster, even considering the dangers of a sticky keyboard...after all even without the danger of field notes cinclodes does fall out of kayaks, into wasp nests, over trees and hopefully for the cottonmouths below.... not out of them.
the original update post has mostly publically available info so seems a fair review.
