I just finished watching the recorded version of the MIX08 conference, featuring the founder of Digg and its CEO in separate sessions. They struck me as very low-key individuals. Digg's numbers continue to grow (it's a dynamite service) so their decision may have been correct but those dollars sure must have been difficult to resist. I don't know that I would have had the will power!
