Out in the real world, I've often heard ordinary people bring up examples like this

According to weather.com, the average high temperature for today’s date is 56 degrees.

According to records kept by The Sheboygan Press for the weather service, the record high on this date was 86 in 1947 and the record low was 23 in 1936.
People say things like "if humans are overheating the planet, why is it so cold now and why was it so warm many decades ago"?

Until they get a good answer, no amount of media hype is going to convince them to willingly fork over serious amounts of their own money to fight this "problem".
