Wisconsin News: De-icer Shortage Raises Prices for Airports Sky-high
But a key ingredient for de-icing runways has quickly become scarce because a group of Canadian miners went on strike, limiting the chemical's output and increasing its price.

Last year, for example, airports bought the chemical for about $2.50 a gallon. This year it's up to nearly $9 a gallon.

"We've already purchased and topped off all our tanks this summer, so we have an adequate supply to get us through this winter season," airport director Marty Lenss said.

So, too, has Austin Straubel International Airport in Brown County. But it's still a blow to the budget.

Last winter when we saw a record snowfall, Outagamie County Regional used 30,000 gallons of the de-icing chemical -- more than a usual winter.

(CNN) -- Global warming data is released constantly these days -- and all of it shows that our planet is in peril.

We know that pollution taints our air, water and land, and global warming threatens humans and wildlife in all corners of the globe.

Just this week, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported that based on records dating back to 1880, 2008 is on track to be one of the 10 warmest years globally, even though it was the coolest year since the turn of the century.

We are at a tipping point when it comes to battling global warming -- the nine warmest years on record all occurred between 1998 and 2008.
