Brainwashed seniors pitch in

Howell, 83, showers every other day and washes her hair only once a week – in the sink instead of the shower. She also shops for gently used clothes at consignment stores and religiously reuses items such as twist-ties and plastic bags.

“I don't want all of this junk filling up our canyons,” she said.

Howell said her environmental awareness has grown in the past few years because of widespread media coverage of glaciers melting, the sea level rising and water becoming more scarce.
