Reducing unnecessary car journeys, switching off appliances and turning down heating levels a notch are among Paul Hurwood's tips for residents.
Mr Hurwood aims to unite Hartlepool in the battle against global warming as the borough council's new climate change officer.
"We all have a role to play in limiting the impact of climate change and together we can all make a difference," he said.
The 27-year-old is also working on a strategic level, liaising closely with a range of council departments and partner organisations to develop an action plan and ensure that Government targets on climate change are met.
It is part of a much bigger plan: President Obama wants to spend $150bn over 10 years on a massive expansion of renewable energy.
He says it will cut the country's dependance on foreign oil, create five "green-collar" jobs and help tackle climate change.
