EurActiv.com - Global climate [hoax] deal [allegedly] needed to halt soaring coal production | EU - European Information on Climate Change
More of the world's electricity was generated from coal last year, reveals a new industry report, pointing at the futility of unilateral EU moves to cut down CO2 emissions.

The 2008 market report of EURACOAL, the industry association representing the European coal industry, shows that global hard coal production increased by at least 200 million tonnes (Mt) last year, most of which was mined in China. Higher energy prices and technological advances make it even more profitable to use already abundant coal resources, the report published this week said.

Dramatic reversal in US position under Obama has brought Beijing to the table on emission cuts, says UK climate secretary
Benny Peiser, CCNet, 5 May 2009:
Rudd’s delaying-tactics, however, are likely to prompt the EU and the U.S. Senate to put on their own brakes, further grinding down the already deadlocked negotiating process over the future of international climate policies. The UN climate conference in Copenhagen is now almost certain to delay major decisions too.

But Mr. Dimas warned the United States that small annual reductions now would require much larger annual reductions — as much as 5 percent a year — after 2020, if Mr. Obama’s long term goal of reducing planet warming gases 80 percent by mid-century is to be reached.

“How they can achieve this is difficult,” Mr. Dimas said, who was speaking at an event in Brussels hosted by the European Policy Center, a policy research organization.

Hans Martens, the chief executive of the E.P.C., reinforced the point, noting that “politicians do have this extraordinary ability to set ambitious targets for their successors.”
