Dr. Rees recognizes there is enormous resistance to the kind of change he advocates, but says it's time people woke up to the "potentially dire crisis" unfolding on the planet.

And arguing against change because it might hurt the economy is illogical, he says.

"Politicians and ordinary citizens fear that policies that would effectively mitigate ecological degradation would slow economic growth," he writes.
