We're going into territory we haven't seen in millions of years,” said Nielsen-Gammon, who spoke as part of a monthly series of presentations hosted by the city's Parks and Recreation Department to generate interest in the developing park.

His appearance drew a crowd of about 25 people who sat in a breezy spot shaded by live oaks.

Globally, there will be “large expanses of the Earth which supported life that no longer do so,” he said.

“This is as much of a consensus document as you can possibly come up with,” he said. “I personally believe about 95 percent of it.”

Claudette Mullen, an active Voelcker Park supporter, said she was pleased with the debate his comments stirred among the audience.

“This is the most dialogue I've heard at an open house in a long time,” she said. “This was perfect for us.”
