Mr. Conrad, 39, was born in the United States to Papuan parents but grew up in Wewak on New Guinea’s northern coast. He studied finance at top American universities, worked in investment banking and lives with his family in the New York City area. President Barack Obama pressured Democrats on the Energy and Commerce committee to pass climate change in a White House meeting last month. His efforts paid off: The bill passed the committee by a 33-25 vote.
But since then, the White House has turned its attention to health care with high-profile speeches, town hall meetings, and private meetings with lawmakers. Key White House aides appear on cable new programs daily to push the health care reform effort.
