There's no doubt that fuel poverty remains an important issue in this country. It still accelerates the deaths of elderly people every winter. Being able to maintain your home at a habitable temperature is a basic human right. But the new plans will make no appreciable difference.

Polly Ghazi explained how the world was waiting for the US to take a lead. She said: "Obama is pushing congress to put through the first Climate Bill. It's not perfect, but it would chop US carbon emissions every year from 2012.

"If they don't, he's threatened to use the legislature to pass the US Clean Air Bill, which would get the same result."

The pupils asked what they could do to make a difference. Mrs Ghazi said: "Make an impact in your own lives, protest through your vote, join pressure groups that have the ear of the politicians, get online and become citizen journalists."
