The population of dippers has diminished recently: fewer than 70 percent of known territories have been occupied by nesting dippers in the past two springs, compared to 80-90 percent in some previous years.

This decline appears to be related to cold-weather mortality in winter, and lowered nesting success in cool, wet summers.

Last year, 19 eggs were laid in five nests and produced 11 chicks. But only six survived to fly. Cold weather, intense storms and predators still manage to take their toll.

Just when you hoped that he hadn’t completely lost touch with the Minnesotans who placed him in office, Rep. Colin Peterson voted for the Waxman/Markey global warming tax.

But we cannot overlook the one thing he has already accomplished for his hometown in the seven months since taking the oath of office. It is his crowning achievement. He has reversed global warming in Chicago!
