Mr Rudd was at his most pastoral as the forum leaders' summit opened in Cairns.
His sermon was on climate change, "the great challenge of our time".
UN climate change chief Yvo de Boer was the visiting preacher, who addressed the leaders during their private meeting. Assistant pastor Penny Wong was also on hand, presenting a video on the threat of inundation to the nation of Kiribati, which rises just 2m above sea level.
Mr Rudd reminded his domestic audience that within eight days the Senate will, in effect, have to decide if it is on the side of fighting the good fight against climate change, or denying it and standing aside: virtue or sin.

According to the influential music magazine, Lang had initially sought to hold a commemorative concert this month in Brooklyn's Prospect Park and to include musicians like Joe Cocker and Santana, who were on the original bill.
When those plans fell through, he switched dates and had sought to hold the event in late September during New York's Climate Week, designed to draw attention to climate change and environmental initiatives.
