It seems the cold weather is not characteristic of China in mid-April, with Wednesday's 8 degrees apparently beaten only by a freezing Shanghai day back in 1873.

Snow has been forecast across Scotland and the north of England as Arctic air blasts across the country.

Leicester Mercury weatherman Dave Mutton said: "I expect the first frosts will be with us at the weekend when it could reach -2C or -3C.
