Giant tent that will keep Astana warm in winters
Astana, July 4 (IANS) The Kazakhstan government is mulling a new architectural wonder for Astana - a giant transparent tent that will keep this capital city warm even in the harsh winter when temperatures slump to minus 30 degrees.
Chill wind gives lambs a warm wattle ward
''Lambs are most susceptible in the first three days of life, but particularly after birth because they are wet,'' she said. ''Primarily, shelter helps against wind. It reduces wind speed, and high wind speed makes a cold temperature colder. So you are reducing the chill index.''

Many succumb simply by being too cold, but most die of secondary hypothermia in which they shiver so much they cannot hold their mother's teat properly.

''It's a cycle. They get cold, they don't eat, they're dead,'' Dr Robertson said. Typically, two in 10 single lambs die, but this rises to three in 10 in twin births. When the weather turns really nasty, half of all those born can be lost.
