TOKYO (Kyodo) -- A cold air mass caused heavy snowfall across Japan on Sunday, with temperatures dropping to record lows in some parts of the country, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

SEOUL, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- South Korea shivered in bitter cold Sunday, with the lowest temperatures in decades recorded in some places, the weather agency said.

The southern port city of Busan hit 10 degrees Fahrenheit, its lowest number in 96 years, the Korea Meteorological Administration told Yonhap.

Adam Sieminski, an energy economist at Deutsche Bank, was quoted by the Platts news service as saying China should be prepared for problems with energy if the weather pattern persists.

"Cold weather in China is expected to intensify over the coming weeks and this, in our view, is likely to exacerbate the squeeze in electric power availability within the country," he said.
