Ms Gillard used her appearance to deal with her plan to put a price on carbon, the most contentious issue facing her government and considered the root cause for her poor standing in the polls.

Under fire for breaking her pre-election promise not to bring in a carbon tax, Ms Gillard conceded she did walk away from that commitment.

"When I said during the election campaign there would be no carbon tax, I didn't intend to mislead people," she said.
