THE UK’s largest-ever “clean coal” trial is finally due to get under way in Yorkshire later this year – but the tens of thousands of tons of CO2 which scientists capture will simply be released into the atmosphere afterwards.

Power giant Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) says it is almost ready to begin the country’s biggest demonstration project so far of fledgling carbon capture technology at its Ferrybridge Power Station in West Yorkshire.

The scheme, backed with more than £6m of Government funding, aims to capture 100 tons of carbon emissions every day from the power station over the next two years before they are released into the atmosphere.
