THE “DNA” of South Africa’s energy-intensive, high-carbon polluting economy has been laid down over centuries and will be difficult and painful to change during the move towards a greener, low-carbon future, the chairman of Parliament’s environmental affairs portfolio committee, Johnny de Lange, has warned.

But if South Africa was serious about responding to the dangers of climate change, and if it wanted to hold the high moral ground, then “serious changes” were required in the structure of the economy.

“And that’s going to be very painful. But if we don’t do it, it’s going to be even more painful, and the quicker we start, the quicker we will change and become a successful nation,” he said yesterday during a briefing to his committee by the National Treasury.
