Brazil, India and China, fearing the ravages of extreme weather, are also taking serious steps to cope with climate change. But the people residing in a big backward nation south of Canada and north of Mexico seem to be living in denial.

Thanks to a steady assault on science and logic by right wing bloggers and talk radio hosts, augmented by an army of lobbyists from the fossil-fuel industries, the number of Americans who believe climate change is real is dropping. And, though climate change deniers remain a minority nationally, they are a big majority in the Republican Party

California’s beaches will have been swamped by rising sea levels, our agricultural heartland will have been pummeled by droughts in some regions and floods in others and extreme weather will have brought disaster after disaster to state after state long before Republicans and their corporate backers admit something might be going haywire.
