'Climate Mama' spreads word against global warming - NorthJersey.com
She says that rising sea levels, record-breaking heat waves and a rash of floods prove global warming is “undeniable.”
“I wanted to make the world safe for my kids,” said Shugarman, who took the name Climate Mama to emphasize the need for parents to get involved in climate change.
Denise Kuehner, who attended Shugarman’s presentation Sunday, said teaching climate change is an important part of parenting.
“The future is in their hands,” said Kuehner, who teaches environmental science at Mahwah High School. “We need to give them the information they need to not destroy their world.”
Shugarman’s climate pitch may sound familiar. She was trained as a presenter by former Vice President Al Gore, whose film “An Inconvenient Truth” brought the discussion into the mainstream.
Shugarman said she fears climate change “deniers” could undermine the hard-won progress made in policy and public awareness over the last decade.
“The media will take what 3,000 climate scientists all agree on [about climate change] and contrast it with what one scientist says, as if the two were equal,” she said.
