Cattiaux et al. further analyzed the severity of the winter 2009/10 over Europe and concluded that winter 2010, was comparable to the cold winter of 1963, adding their caveat that "future winters in Europe may NOT be as cold as 2009/10 winter, due to the warming of the climate (due to anthropogenic warming!)"

In contrast, the winter 2011/12 over Europe appears to be much colder and deadlier than the winter of 2009/10 thus far. It remains to be analyzed in detail to assess if this year's winter over Europe may turn out to be colder and more severe than the winter of 2009/10. But, as the Sun approaches a projected 'grand minima' in the next few years, winters over Europe may indeed become colder and longer and not warmer, as suggested by Cattiaux et al. in response to supposed CO₂-induced global warming. Only time will tell which thesis is right.
