“If we have difficulty figuring out how to deal with immigration today, look at the prospects for the glacial retreats in the Andes,” said R. James Woolsey, former head of the CIA, at an event to launch the letter.
“The glaciers are not doing well…If that starts to go away, we will have millions upon millions of southern neighbours hungry, thirsty, with crops failing and looking for some place in the world they can go,” he said.

Before we get excited: how much of downstream water volume is glacial melting and how much is snowmelt and rainwater?
I live in areas of remnant glaciers (Athabasca glacier, Wapta icefields, Alberta, Canada). I've hiked the areas many times. Down valley, there is a lot of river because the river is rainwater fed (mostly, except early spring meltwater highwaters).
A book I read about some fellas that hiked over the Andes to raft down the Amazon to the Atlantic had the same thing: no water up top, where it was cold and dry, and lots of water down below, where it was warm and raining wet.
The glaciers could all melt and I'll bet we wouldn't see much change, if any. 4532 exinatio
