[Tim Worstall] Shorter supply chains for food is a euphemism for eating only local food. Which is something of a problem: just over the border in Germany from where I am right now the farmers are complaining that this very cold, very wet and very late spring has meant that huge swathes of their crops won’t be harvestable this year. Great, so if everyone in Germany ate only local crops then Germany would starve later this year. This is not an advance on our current food supply system.

It is this which always surprises me about this forward to the middle ages crowd. They seem not to understand that this almost hermetically sealed local economy is one of near unremitting labour for everyone in it.The medieval peasants were poor, recall?
