The aircraft was built eight years after the first flight of the Wright brothers in 1911 and has been buried in ice since around 1975.

"Our carpenter was just taking a walk along the beach and just saw the metal in 10 centimetres of water, just right next to the ice."

Dr Stewart says the remains have been under their feet the whole.

"The ice melts back very quickly, it's on the edge of a harbour which is covered in sea ice most of the year and then as summer comes the edge of the ice gradually pulls off in huge chunks," he said.

Weather and Climate Through the Eyes of Mark Vogan: An Unforgiving Period of Winter Settling into the Lower 48
Yes, it will grow colder I think before it grows warmer for the Upper Midwest, I do see subzero highs for Minneapolis and teens below zero for portions of eastern North Dakota and western, northwestern Minnesota. Tonight it's likely to bottom out around 16 to 18 below in the Twin Cities whilst lows close to 40 below may be found up along the Canadian border at International Falls and Fort Frances, Ontario.Portions of northwest Iowa where it's already 26 below at Sioux Falls, we may see a couple lows in that area of the state drop under 30 below.
