Government 'scientific advisers': who needs these nuts in white coats? – Gerald Warner - Telegraph BlogsThanks to climate change scams, swine flu and a whole host of own-goals, the status of the white-coated prima donnas and narcissists has never been lower in the public esteem. It was Rush Limbaugh, of all unlikely candidates, who at the height of the Climategate exposé made the thoughtful point that more than climate was at stake: the credibility of the entire scientific community was collapsing. He was right. After a period of priest-like authority, the pointy-heads in lab coats have reassumed the role of mad cranks they enjoyed from the days of Frankenstein to boys’ comics in the 1950s.

Despite all this, Professor Nutt opposed the reclassification of cannabis as a Class B drug. In that purblind opposition he betrayed his detachment from real life. So do his colleagues in the global warming lobby. The public is no longer in awe of scientists. Like squabbling evangelical churches in the 19th century, they can form as many schismatic sects as they like, nobody is listening to them any more. Unquestioned authority derived from a white coat and a doctorate is as dead as the Druids.
Roger Pielke Jr.'s Blog: New Scientist Wants an ExplanationI discussed this situation last month in a post in which I argued that the problem here is not that the IPCC made a mistake. That is just troubling. The greater problem is how the IPCC has responded to having a mistake pointed out...

That the IPCC has made some important mistakes is very troubling, but perhaps understandable given the magnitude of the effort. Its reluctance to deal with obvious errors is an even greater problem reflecting poorly on an institution that has become too insular and politicized.
Unfortunately, the glacier error is not unique. The IPCC contains a number of other egregious errors that also deserve some answers.

In a one-two series of Climategate aftershocks that assuredly will further rattle the global warming community, a report has been issued by U.S. researchers accusing government agencies of cherry-picking temperature readings used to assess global temperatures, and a series of embarrassing e-mails were released revealing what happened when a blogger dared to point out a mistake by NASA climate scientists.

The statement came in response to reports from the independent Cuban Commission on Human Rights that at least 24 mental patients died of hypothermia this week, and that the hospital did not do enough to protect them from the cold because of problems such as faulty windows.
Commission head Elizardo Sanchez said that so many patients dying of hypothermia was "absurd in a tropical country" and claimed the deaths could have been prevented if the government had granted long-standing requests from international aid groups to tour Cuba's medical facilities, including the capital's 2,500-bed mental hospital.
Chip Knappenberger: We're warming. In conclusion, this debate should not be between those who allegedly nobly wish to save the planet by radical decarbonisation and the selfish deniers who do not care for the future of the world. We must continue seeking practical ways to cleanse our environment. Above all, we must seek for objective science to establish what is happening to our ever-changing climate. I hope that we will not rush into panic measures that fatally damage our western economy. We must make sure that we get the scientific facts right and that our policy responses are ones of proportionate adaptation.

Review: “Global Warming: The Other Side” | CLIMATEGATEE.Michael Smith notes “When doing a benchmark test of the program, I found patterns in the input data from NCDC that looked like dramatic and selective deletions of thermometers from cold locations.” Smith says after awhile, it became clear this was not a random strange pattern he was finding, but a well designed and orchestrated manipulation process. “The more I looked, the more I found patterns of deletion that could not be accidental. Thermometers moved from cold mountains to warm beaches; from Siberian Arctic to more southerly locations, and from pristine rural locations to jet airport tarmacs. The last remaining Arctic thermometer in Canada is in a place called ‘The Garden Spot of the Arctic,’ always moving away from the cold and toward the heat. I could not believe it was so blatant and it clearly looked like it was in support of an agenda,” Smith says

Rabid environmentalists have descended into a separate reality where only green counts. It's gotten so bad that the head of the California Air Resources Board, Mary Nichols, announced this past fall that costly new carbon regulations would boost the economy shortly after she was told by eight of the state's most respected economists that they were certain these new rules would damage the economy. The next day, her own economic consultant, Harvard's Robert Stavis, denounced her statement as a blatant distortion.
Scientists are expected to make sure their findings are replicable, to make the data available, and to encourage the search for new theories and data that may overturn the current consensus. This is what Galileo, Darwin and Einstein—among the most celebrated scientists of all time—did. But some climate researchers, most notably at the University of East Anglia, attempted to hide or delete temperature data when that data didn't show recent rapid warming. They quietly suppressed and replaced the numbers, and then attempted to squelch publication of studies coming to different conclusions.

Further improvements in air quality are bound to happen anyhow, as technology develops and as vehicles and power plants become cleaner.

Why, then, has the EPA proposed this rule? Because the Obama administration wants to increase the cost of energy. The President's flagship global warming policy, "cap and trade," remains stalled in the Senate, with Senators of both parties all too aware of the damage it will do to their states. The President, however, promised in his election campaign that energy rates would "necessarily skyrocket," and the smog rule is another way to achieve that end without having to bother with the messy business of gaining Congressional approval.

Green jobs or pink slips? - JSOnlineGov. Jim Doyle last week unveiled his marquee energy initiative, the Clean Energy Jobs Act. He says the legislation would create "green jobs," but it is much more likely to generate pink slips.
The legislation would mandate more green energy, such as wind and solar power. Of course, forcing people to use green energy creates jobs in the green energy industry, but it's not that simple. Green energy is expensive energy, which is bad news for Wisconsin's energy-intensive industrial base. Doyle's mandate might create some jobs in the solar panel installation business, but it's going to destroy just as many, and probably more, paychecks in the manufacturing business.

The IPCC and their supported scientists have worked to remove the pesky Medieval Warm Period, the Little Ice Age, and the period emailer Tom Wigley referred to as the “warm 1940s blip.” They have also worked to pump up the recent warm cycle that ended in 2001.

EU Should Keep Offer For 30%-Emissions Cut-UK Climate Min - WSJ.comSEVILLE, Spain (Dow Jones)--The European Union should stick to its offer to increase its target for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions if other countries come up with similarly ambitious targets, U.K. Energy and Climate Change Minister Lord Hunt said Friday.
Abbott 'walking away' from climate change policy - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)The New South Wales Environment Minister, Frank Sartor, says Mr Abbott has not thought through his plan to recruit thousands for a 'green army'.
Mr Abbott has released two new environmental policies, including spending $750 million-a-year to recruit 15,000 people to work on environmental projects.
But Frank Sartor says there are already thousands of employees and volunteers working with the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Services on environmental projects.

Thinking Green--The New Religion...the intellectual elites are not so secular as they believe themselves to be. As it happens, their religion may not be theistic, but it is a religion all the same.
That fact is confirmed in a recent article in The Chronicle of Higher Education. Stephen T. Asma, a professor of philosophy at Columbia College Chicago, argues that the new religion of many secular folk is ecology. As Asma explains, many secular types suffer from "green guilt."
More preparation needed for climate change, says PhillipsTECUMSEH, Ont. -- Canadian are not doing enough to prepare for extreme weather events brought on by climate change, Environment Canada senior climatologist David Phillips said Thursday.
“We clearly have to do more with less fossil fuels,” Phillips told a crowd of about 500 gathered for an EcoSchools workshop at the Ciociaro Club Thursday.
...The Greater Essex County District School Board was the first board to make the provincial EcoSchools program mandatory in every school.
...
Fellow Queen Elizabeth student Annalee Chopchik, 12, said she collects Kool-Aid Jammers so they can be washed and sewn into purses.
Phillips told the workshop most scientists feel the world is warming up faster now. Canada is the second coldest country in the world and some might welcome warmer weather. But he told the crowd climate change will mean increased variability or “jokers in the weather deck” and more extreme weather.
He said the climate in Southwestern Ontario will be like that of Kentucky, which has more severe tornadoes than anywhere else in the United States.

PRIMARY UNITED STATES CLIMATE CENTERS NOW CAUGHT IN DATA MANIPULATIONNOAA and NASA start with the unadjusted NOAA GHCN (Global Historical Climate Network). NASA eliminates some stations and adds some in the polar regions. For NASA, the computer program that manipulates the data is known as GIStemp, Both then add their own adjustments to calculate a global average temperature and a ranking for each month and year. The two inter-related U.S Government agencies have so intertwined their programs and data sets that both are being challenged by the investigating team that has produced this "smoking gun of U.S. Climate-gate.” “We suspect each center will try to hide behind, ‘It’s them; Not us’ and point fingers at each other," says the Computer Programmer from San Jose behind these new revelations.

[Even the "believers" don't really believe]: Apocalypse MaybeThe problem is that most of the bad stuff won’t be happening for another 20 to 30 years so it is hard to generate a real sense of urgency, especially when there are so many other pressing and very expensive problems that are crying out for immediate attention, Haiti being a good case in point.
...
For today it is safe to call climate change "Apocalypse Maybe." But if we continue to ignore the warning signs from nature, if we continue to pursue the last drop of oil, the last ounce of coal, if we don’t learn to do more with less, if we don’t do a better job of fitting mankind into the global web of life then yes, our children and grandchildren will be looking at "Apocalypse Now."
[Here's an idea: Spend a lot of extra money for solar panels, spend a lot of extra time shivering in the dark when they fail to perform as you'd hoped, and enjoy an extra 6.5 cents annually in carbon credit income!!]In other words if 10 million typical U.S. homes went solar, supplying 100 percent of their electricity carbon-free, the U.S. would shed 6.5 million tons of CO2 annually. [ie, each home earns .65 of a carbon credit, with carbon credits currently selling at a dime per ton on the Chicago Climate Exchange]
Ghana: Govt Targets $30 Billion Climate Change [Swindle] MoneyGhana is positioning herself for a share of the billions of dollars expected to flow to African states, small island nations and other developing nations as a result of the commitments made in the Copenhagen Accord adopted at the Fifteenth Conference of the Parties (COP-15) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) last December.
Bjorn Lomborg - From Copenhagen's ashes, a better way to fight global warming - washingtonpost.comDevoting just 0.2 percent of global gross domestic product -- roughly $100 billion (70 billion euros) a year -- to green energy R&D would produce the kind of game-changing breakthroughs needed to fuel a carbon-free future. Not only would this be a much less expensive fix than trying to cut carbon emissions, it would also reduce global warming far more quickly.

Oilrigs should be used for homes in areas at risk of flooding, report says - Times OnlineDecommissioned North Sea oil platforms should be towed to the waterfronts of coastal cities at risk of flooding and converted into homes, shops and universities protected from rising sea levels, a study recommends.
Britain should not retreat from the waves but embrace them, adapting to climate change and consequent flooding by building new communities, either on stilts or floating platforms.

Scarewatch: Schneider again. | The SPPI BlogThe desperation of the climate extremists as global temperatures plummet for the tenth year in a row is growing. Stephen Schneider, professor of environmental biology and “global change” at Stanford University, said today:
“We can no longer prevent global warming — it is upon us. Rapidly melting polar icecaps, acidification of the oceans, loss of coral reefs, longer droughts, more devastating wildfires, and sea level rise that threatens island nations and seacoasts everywhere are clear signs of change in Earth’s climate. Disruptions of the monsoon seasons in India and China already threaten crop yields resulting in more frequent and severe food shortages than in the recent past … If we continue ‘business as usual’ our habitat could be disrupted beyond recognition, with consequences for our way of life that we cannot now foresee. Without vigorous and immediate follow-up to the Copenhagen conference and well-conceived action we are all threatened by accelerating and irreversible changes to our planet.”
Nonsense. Here’s why.
