In the eyes of Nature, warming can't be natural - Telegraph

Since the fading belief that the world is in the grip of runaway man-made global warming still threatens us with the biggest bill in history, it is rather important to know how far we can trust the science which is said to support that belief. One of the most vociferous cheerleaders in the cause has been the Nature, which calls itself "the world's most prestigious weekly journal of science".

Whenever some landmark event in the story is approaching – such as a world climate conference or a new report by the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) – Nature can be relied on to come up with a new paper purporting to refute one of the more embarrassing objections to the orthodox theory. However thoroughly such a paper is then dismantled by expert critics, it will remain established as a pillar of the orthodoxy.

Japan committed to reduce production of gases blamed for global warming by 6 percent from 2008 through 2012 from 1990

We often suggest that people who are in denial join a support group, if necessary and appropriate, to help them overcome their unhealthy denial. When it comes to climate change deniers, however, they already have a huge support group. Unfortunately, their "support group" consists of the Church of Scientific Distortion and Denial and its outlets include Fox News, conservative talk radio, and the Tea Party. If you are an alcoholic, you can avoid bars and go to AA meetings but it is difficult to quit denying the climate is changing if the media you consume and the people you interact with confirm your false beliefs.

The Reference Frame: Ozone hole and global warming: evolution of an alarm

In the last 25 years, we have seen the decline of the claims that the ozone depletion and global warming are the same thing. It's one of the rare examples of stupid scares that have actually largely disappeared. However, we're still drowning in the ocean of similar demagogy which is emitted by dishonest ideologues as well as hopeless morons. If one wanted to behave rationally, according to the best recommendations that science can give us, he would find out that none of the chemicals is really a "pure villain" or "pure victim", most of the effects that are hyped in the media are secondary and negligible, and even the sign of the conclusion "what we should try to achieve" according to science is often opposite relatively to what the media and not only media tell us. In particular, carbon dioxide is a big friend of ours.

The Illogic of EPA Carbon Regulations - On Energy (usnews.com)

If global warming is a problem that the EPA needs to address, then why are they working on imposing rules that the agency admits "will not have [a] direct impact of U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases?" It's tough to see how EPA regulation makes logical sense. Does the EPA not really care about global warming or are they working to end America's use of coal? Does the EPA only want to increase the price of energy by making it harder to build low-cost electricity generation? What explains the EPA's actions? And why are taxpayers paying for this nonsense?

How Green Are Electric Cars? Depends on Where You Plug In

In a worst-case situation, with electric power generated from a high proportion of coal — as it is in a wide swath of the country’s midsection — an electric car or a plug-in hybrid will generate slightly more full-cycle global-warming emissions, as the report calls the greenhouse gases, than the best gasoline-engine subcompact.

Don't Kill the Electric Car - NYTimes.com

But even in places with the dirtiest electric power supply, driving an electric car can provide environmental benefits. A look back to 2008: Remember when Al Gore tried to recruit a 10 million-strong green army?

[March 31, 2008]:  Gore to recruit 10m-strong green army | Environment | The Guardian

Al Gore yesterday launched a drive to mobilise 10 million volunteers to force politicians to act on climate change - twice as many as the number who marched against the Vietnam war or in support of civil rights during the heyday of US activism in the 1960s.

During the next three years, his Alliance for Climate Protection plans to spend $300m (about £150m) on television advertising and online organising to make global warming among the most urgent issues for elected American leaders.

...Environmental activists yesterday described the plan as the most ambitious public campaign launched in the US.

"The resources are completely unprecedented in American politics," said Philip Clapp, of the Pew Environment Group. It is equally ambitious in targets.

In the context of Thursday, during the question time, I had written my question on a card for the Professor:Was Al Gore correct in Inconvenient Truth?

Doubtless, this is a common question to a Climate Scientist, and to my recollection, the Professor’s answer was brisk and with no hesitation: “Probably 90% accurate”, he said, relating a couple of areas where Mr. Gore’s analysis might have been a bit off target.

The back story of my dream perhaps came a few hours earlier when I, along with perhaps 70 others, men and women, participated in a powerful one and a half hours with world climate expert Professor John Abraham of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. He started his talk with a satellite photo of the world, specifically Africa; he ended his presentation with photos of his two daughters, age four and five, who are, he said, the reason he’s devoting his professional life to the crisis of climate change. He is, after all, making their future, and that of their descendants. Africa in particular, and the coming generations will reap the consequences of human activity, especially during the period of the Industrial Revolution.

What You Should Know About Exxon Mobil’s Latest Ad Campaign | TIME Ideas | TIME.com

If you were watching the Masters golf tournament last weekend, you would have noticed it was laced with ads from Exxon Mobil calling for….better science. That’s right. The very company that funded decades of science denial takes it back. Sort of. ExxonMobil ranks high in a short list of powerful institutions that has done this country an enormous disservice in undermining the overall credibility of the scientific method in general, and climate scientists specifically.

...Still, how about teeing up another campaign? ExxonMobil tells Americans that it was wrong to mislead people. That it was wrong to undermine credibility in the scientific method. That we have entered an era of manmade global warming, that it could lead to cascading catastrophe the likes of which we have never seen, that we are rolling the dice, way off the game board, in the risks we are taking in contributing further to greenhouse gas pollution—and that ExxonMobil is proud to announce that it is doing everything in its power to support the training of a new generation of scientists who will show us how we can adapt to this difficult new reality.

Oops: Three years after Buzz Aldrin declared he was skeptical of man-made climate fears, fraudster Michael Mann still believes that Aldrin is on his side

NASA Climate Change Letter Belongs To Long Tradition Of Fake Expertise
WASHINGTON -- When former NASA administrators, astronauts and engineers released a letter earlier this week attacking the science of climate change, its veneer of legitimacy kicked off a media blitz. Yet none of the letter's 49 signatories are climate scientists, and with more than 18,000 people currently working for NASA, to say nothing of the tens of thousands more who are retired, the letter seems more than anything like a empty publicity stunt -- for which there's considerable precedent.
"This is an old stunt," explained Michael Mann, a well-known climate scientist and Penn State professor. "When you have an area of the science where there is a consensus like in climate change, where the problem is real and the scientific implications are on a collision course with vested interests like the fossil fuel industry, you often see this."  [What other areas of science is Mann talking about?]
..."They can't discredit the science in the legitimate sphere of scientific debate, which is to say, the peer-reviewed literature, the various assessment reports published by various governments ... so what they try to do is create the illusion that the science is being hotly contested by finding the small group, often of curmudgeonly individuals, who might feel left out," said Mann, who documents this recurrent phenomenon in his newly released book, "The Hockey Stick And The Climate Wars: Dispatches From The Front Lines."
Author John Cook similarly considers such public announcements as one of the five most easily identifiable characteristics of science denialism, wherein deniers use fake experts to undermine established science.
...Of course, two can play at enlisting the support of false experts.
Mann -- who, having survived the phony Climategate scandal, has as much experience as anyone in fighting off the political attacks of climate deniers -- offered a bit of media bait of his own.
"What's really telling is that they couldn't get people like Buzz Aldrin -- or for that matter John Glenn -- to sign this petition," Mann said. "I think it speaks volumes that the most prominent astronauts were completely uninterested in having any part in this ploy, and I was proud of them for that."
Flashback: Another Moonwalker Defies Gore: NASA Astronaut Dr. Buzz Aldrin rejects global warming fears: 'Climate has been changing for billions of years' | Climate Depot
NASA's Dr. Aldrin -- who earned a Doctorate of Science in Astronautics at MIT -- declared he was skeptical of man-made climate fears in a July 3, 2009 UK Telegraph interview.
"I think the climate has been changing for billions of years," Aldrin, the second person to walk on the Moon, said. On July 20, 1969, Aldrin and astronaut Neil Armstrong made their historic Apollo 11 moonwalk, becoming the first two humans to set foot on the Moon. According to his bio, "Aldrin has received three U.S. patents for his schematics of a modular space station, Starbooster reusable rockets, and multi-crew modules for space flight." Aldrin was also decorated with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest American peacetime award and he has received numerous distinguished awards and medals from 23 other countries.
"If it's warming now, it may cool off later. I'm not in favor of just taking short-term isolated situations and depleting our resources to keep our climate just the way it is today," Aldrin explained.
"I'm not necessarily of the school that we are causing it all, I think the world is causing it," Aldrin added.

Philosophy, climate change scepticism and the avant-garde intelligentsia - On Line Opinion - 13/4/2012

This little excursion into intellectual history is important because it goes to the heart of a rarely discussed feature of the climate change debate. The conservative sceptics of climate change science adopt the same underlying argument about climatology that left wing academics have been making for decades about science in toto.

Only the left wing academics are shamefully silent about this as they poo-poo their supposedly simpleton conservative cousins.

Climate change scepticism has rested on a number of claims about the science of climate change. These range from the claim that the atmosphere has not been warming, that the amount of warming, to the extent that it has occurred, has been insignificant, or that warming is due to natural variation rather than induced by the activities of man.

Given all this it is only right and proper to adopt a typically sceptical stance about the knowledge claims made by established Earth science; there is not sufficient evidence to assert that we know that global temperatures have been rising due to human action.

It is important that we realise that this scepticism is empirically based. It does not adopt a sceptical stance toward science as such, although unsophisticated sceptics tend to unwittingly flirt with it when engaged in disputation.

Bookends and Separations « the Air Vent

[Tom Fuller] Everything that the climate consensus team has done in the past 20 years has contained elements of the same fundamental errors in thinking and strategy–from GreenPeace telling us they knew where we lived to No Pressure videos blowing up school children. There are thousands of examples that could be brought forth to show that their strategy had no human heart and no mechanism for enlisting participation–their goal was forcing opponents into silent submission instead. This 20-year war was fought at a soulless, corporate level, with campaigns designed and implemented by the media masters and mistresses of large environmental NGOs and it showed. From fighting World Bank loans for a South African coal plant to wilder statements of how few people the planet could sustainably carry, these people showed an appalling lack of humanity and an amazing excess of energy.

For me, the campaign ends with Peter Gleick. His actions were the signature at the end of the book. Coming as they did after Climategate, after Copenhagen, after five years (at least) of meditating on how to more effectively communicate on the issue, Gleick’s actions–and the lack of condemnation they received from the climate community–effectively removed anthropogenic climate change from the top tier of political issues to be considered at a global, or even national, level. Peter Gleick is still president of the Pacific Institute and will be speaking soon at Oxford. There is evidently no level of misconduct that will not be tolerated as long as the miscreant stays on message.

But people have pretty much stopped listening. They’ve even stopped writing. Joe Romm has folded his Climate Progress blog into the rubric of Think Progress’ larger efforts and now interns do much of his writing for him. Deltoid is down to one post a month, and it’s an open thread. Michael Tobis has fled Only In It For The Gold and is now writing at Planet 3–and complaining about a lack of traffic.

Letter to NASA is Common Ploy in Climate Change Denial

“NASA has always been about looking out to the skies and beyond, not burying our heads in the sand,” climate scientist Michael Mann told Universe Today in an email “This is an old ploy, trying to cobble together a small group of individuals and make it sound like they speak with authority on a matter that they have really not studied closely. In this case, the effort was led by a fossil fuel industry-funded (climate change) denier who works for the Heartland Institute, and sadly he managed to manipulate this group of former NASA employees into signing on to this misguided statement.”

Mann added that 49 people out of tens of thousands of former and current NASA employees is just a tiny fraction, and that “NASA’s official stance, which represents the full current 16,000 NASA scientists and employees, is clear if you go to their website or look at their official publications: human-caused climate change is real, and it represents a challenge we must confront.”

'Green' consumer attitudes questioned - UPI.com

LONDON, April 12 (UPI) -- [Less than half of] Young Chinese adults say they would pay extra for products that display green credentials, but consumer behavior researchers say they are skeptical.

The Carbon Trust in London quizzed 2,800 18 to 25-year-olds from six countries on their attitudes to climate change and carbon footprints, NewScientist.com reported Thursday.

While most participants said they would buy products labeled with carbon footprints only if they cost the same as conventional products, in China 42 percent of respondents said they would be willing to pay more.

Computer Models Wrong Again, Says Former Environment Minister Sammy Wilson MP

East Antrim MP and former Northern Ireland Environment Minister Sammy Wilson MP, has said that computer models and their predictions about global warming are proving, once more, to be wrong.

Sammy Wilson was speaking following the publication of an article by Professor William Happer, a professor of physics at Princeton University, in which he states that computer models from organisations such as the IPCC assume that CO2 is responsible for warming and this is causing their inaccuracy.

Sammy Wilson said, "If we actually look at the facts we can see that there has been very little change in global temperatures in the last ten years. There has been no statistically significant warming in over a decade.

CO2 has been demonised as a pollutant but in reality it has had little to no effect on our climate. Computer models assume that CO2 is responsible for warming and this is why they have been so inaccurate.

Besieged by Climate Deniers, A Scientist Decides to Fight Back by Michael E. Mann: Yale Environment 360

Since the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports in 2007, new scientific findings have indicated that global warming is generally worse than we thought. Carbon emissions are higher than the IPCC projected, Arctic sea ice is melting at a faster-than-expected clip, and observed and projected sea levels are increasing. At the same time, advances in climate science have more definitively linked climate change to an increasing likelihood of many types of extreme weather events.

My four-year-old daughter was entranced by the mangrove forests, the dolphins, and the coral reefs, with their exotic and colorful fish. I couldn’t bear to tell her that climate change and an increasingly acidic ocean are slowly killing the reefs, that increasingly destructive hurricanes would subject them to further insult, and that projected sea level rise over the next century and beyond could submerge vast regions of the Florida Keys.

Row over farmers and emissions
The government is giving itself the option of setting back agriculture's entry to the ETS to 2018 if an independent survey in 2014 finds other countries are not keeping pace with New Zealand.
At present the entry date is 2015, and when they are under the ETS farmers will have to pay for greenhouse gas emissions like methane from cattle.

Federated Farmers is welcoming the move but it's been condemned by the Green Party and Greenpeace.

A fan of science, she gradually turned her artistic talents and environmental passions to crafting comics about climate change. I

[Q] Your online bio explains your interest in cartooning, but why did you take on climate change?

[Evans] Well it's the elephant in the room, isn't it? You can't be a sentient person in the beginning of the 21st century and not want to address climate change. If you do not, you must be in denial. I'm just so cross right now, too. I just saw a BBC documentary about the weirding of weather, and they never mentioned the words "greenhouse gases" or "carbon dioxide." And they kept saying, "scientists believe" this, "scientists believe" that. No, scientists have proved it. They're not some kind of church. There is scientific consensus. I feel very strongly about that.

    Did Arctic Warming Sink Titanic?

Here is an excerpt from a New York Times report published on May 5, 1912, a few weeks after Titanic went down:

“An unprecedentedly warm Winter in the entire arctic is believed to be the cause of the vast number of icebergs adrift in the North Atlantic Ocean during the present season and for the low latitudes which many of them have reached. Navigators and scientists of the Hydrographic Office and the Revenue Cutter Service in Washington have theories tending to prove that an unusually heavy snowfall in Greenland, where all icebergs are formed, in the Winter of 1910-11 was followed by an unusually hot Summer, and by a very mild Winter in 1911-12, these conditions resulting in the creation of an enormously large crop of icebergs from the West Greenland glaciers, and of floe, or field ice. Unusual northerly and northwesterly winds have blown these bergs far to the southward.”

Shift in perception noted at climate change event | | The Bulletin

About 300 people gathered in a Portland State University ballroom Tuesday night to hear three Oregon climate scientists make their case that increases in manmade greenhouse gases are driving climate change.

The event hosted by the Oregon chapter of the American Meteorological Society, was open to the public. It came in response to a January panel of global warming skeptics hosted by the chapter that event organizers estimated drew about 500 people.

The audience flip-flopped from January, when mostly skeptics attended. Chapter President Steve Pierce asked for a show of hands beforehand Tuesday evening, then estimated that at least 90 percent of the crowd favored the statement that human activities are the main cause of global warming.

Technologies like battery storage have vastly improved, solar efficiency is improving and electric cars are just at the beginning of their development...Dr. Chu, a Nobel Prize-winning academic before he joined the Obama administration, noted that a century ago, automobiles replaced horses and horse-drawn carriages within the space of about 25 years. “It was accelerated by the fact that there was an environmental imperative,” he said.

What kind of imperative? Well, New York City alone had about 160,000 horses hauling people and goods around at that time. “There was a very visible environmental impact that was piling up on corners all over the place,” Dr. Chu said. “So it hastened the shift remarkably.”

And why would one listen to Worstall when he is busy deferring to experts other than himself ?

As a measure of the quality of air in our country, the U.S. EPA maintains data and statistics that quantify air quality from 1980 to the present.  Based on the U.S. EPA's own data, the national ambient air quality standards for certain target pollutants have all steadily and dramatically reduced.  As a national average:

    • Carbon monoxide has been reduced 82%
    • Ozone was reduced 28%
    • Lead has been reduced 89%
    • Nitrogen oxides have been reduced 52%
    • Particulate matter as PM10 was reduced 38%, and fine particulate matter as PM 2.5 has been reduced 27%
    • Sulfur dioxide has been reduced 83%
