If you're at all interested in the global warming debate, you should read this entire 2002 piece by the late John L. Daly.

There is one all-time hot record that is the ultimate global prize: 58°C (136°F) set at Al Aziziya, Libya, in 1922. This was the hottest temperature ever recorded anywhere in the world and has stood for 80 years in spite of real or imagined `global warming". It is even noted in the Guinness Book of Records. But 1922 is a long time ago and the longer it stands, the less convincing are the claims about global warming in the eyes of the public.

In all of Death Valley, the ARC has chosen just about the hottest spot possible in the hottest valley in North America. They have in effect put it into a natural oven - and done so in the full knowledge of Badwater's topography. Now all they have to do is wait - wait for the inevitable day when the conditions will be just right - clear skies, still air, a blazing sun, and that instrument will heat up from the combined heating of the air, the immense heating from the nearby cliff only metres behind the instrument, the intense reflected heat radiation from the salt pan, and the mercury will very likely fall over the Libyan line and record the `hottest temperature ever measured on earth'.

Then we will see the champagne corks fly as the greenhouse industry will cry with righteous indignation, announcing the `new hottest temperature ever recorded on earth', how it's all due to global warming etc. etc. and all the time, the whole thing will be about as fake as a three dollar bill.

Even the wording on the plaque on the instrument betrays the real intent - the exclusive emphasis on the significance of heat, of global warming, of record-breaking temperatures, of the `hottest year ever' etc. The plaque speaks of little else. Even the opening words of the text are `Carbon dioxide released by human activities etc. ....'. Consequently, it is reasonable to conclude that record-breaking is the primary purpose of the instrument, not genuine climatic research.

It made official what anyone who has soldiered through a Death Valley summer afternoon here could attest to. There is no place hotter in the world. A 134-degree reading registered on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch here is now the official world record.

"Global" warming bypasses Georgia

Averaged across the state of Georgia, the long-term annual temperature history shows that the first half of the 20th century was, in general, much warmer than the most recent 50 year period. Obviously, “global warming” has not had much of an effect on the temperatures here. While it is often reported that globally the last 10 years were the hottest on record, the story is much different in Georgia where only 1 of the 10 hottest years on record statewide occurred during the past 10 years. Four of the state’s 10 all-time hottest years, including the hottest year on record, occurred during the 1920s—more than 75 years ago. Further, while only 14 of the recent 50 years were above the long-term average, 38 of the first 50 years of the 20th century were warmer than average.

The two tropical diseases most commonly cited as spreading as a result of global warming, malaria and dengue fever, are not in fact “tropical” at all and thus are not as closely linked to climate as many people suggest. For example, malaria epidemics occurred as far north as Archangel, Russia, in the 1920s, and in the Netherlands. Malaria was common in most of the United States prior to the 1950s (Reiter, 1996). In fact, in the late 1800s, a period when it was demonstrably colder in the United States than it is today, malaria was endemic in most of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains—a region stretching from the Gulf Coast all the way up into Northern Minnesota—including the southern half of Georgia. In 1878, about 100,000 Americans were infected with malaria; about one-quarter of them died. By 1912, malaria was already being brought under control, yet persisted in the southeastern United States well into the 1940s. In fact, in 1946 the Congress created the Communicable Disease Center (the forerunner to the current U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) for the purpose of eradicating malaria from the regions of the U.S. where it continued to persist. The CDC was located in Atlanta, Georgia primarily because this region was the primary one which was still affected by the disease. By the mid-to-late 1950s, the Center had achieved its goal and malaria was effectively eradicated from the United States. This occurred not because of climate change, but because of technological and medical advances. Better anti-malaria drugs, air-conditioning, the use of screen doors and windows, and the elimination of urban overpopulation brought about by the development of suburbs and automobile commuting were largely responsible for the decline in malaria (Reiter, 1996; Reiter, 2001). Today, the mosquitoes that spread malaria are still widely present in the Unites States, but the transmission cycle has been disrupted and the pathogen leading to the disease is absent. Climate change is not involved.

When asked how concerned his colleagues in other areas of the agriculture department such as agronomy and animal science are about climate change, he said, “It’s not an issue to them at all.”

Steven Smith, a wildlife and fisheries consultant with the Noble Foundation in Ardmore, Okla., who was in the audience, had a slightly different interpretation. He described attitudes toward global warming as “split down the middle” within the wildlife community.

He thinks of it as largely a generational issue.

The new normal in climate science is to distort climate records from the 1930s.

After recalculating data from last year, the nation’s climatologists are declaring that Oklahoma suffered through the hottest summer ever recorded in the U.S. last year — not Texas as initially announced last fall.

“It doesn’t make me feel any better,” joked Texas rancher Debbie Davis, who lives northwest ofSan Antonio.

In the new tally by the National Climatic Data Center, Oklahoma’s average temperature last summer was 86.9 degrees, while Texas finished with 86.7 degrees. The previous record for the hottest summer was 85.2 degrees set in 1934 — in Oklahoma.

NCDC’s data shows that the Oklahoma City summer of 1934 had 61 days over 100 degrees, compared to only 38 days in 2011.

The graph below shows all 100+ degree days ever recorded at Oklahoma City, which have been on the decline. Nine of Oklahoma City’s ten hottest days occurred before 1960.

This is what they call bad data:

Calculating an average temperature of the US from more than one thousand thermometers,which are almost evenly distributed geographically. They say that the one thousand thermometers need to be adjusted by 1.5 degrees before the data can be used.

Has there ever been a field of science where experts were so stupid, and so completely full of crap?

A new climate change report from the Met Office and its US equivalent has provided the "greatest evidence we have ever had" that the world is warming.

Next year is likely to be cooler because of a “very strong” La Nina effect, the Met Office said today in an e- mailed statement. That refers to a periodic pattern of cooler surface waters in the Pacific Ocean. The latest began in the second half of 2010. The British agency said 2011 is likely to be about 0.44 degrees Celsius hotter than the 1961 through 1990 average, placing it among the 10 warmest years on record.

That compares with the 0.52-degree temperature “anomaly” registered in 1998, the hottest year in the series compiled by the Met Office since 1850.

While a single year of data “doesn’t give a scientific basis to arrive at any kind of inference,” there’s a stronger trend to be drawn from a longer series of readings, Rajendra Pachauri, the UN’s chief climate scientist, said in an interview in Cancun. Out of the period, 5 years were slightly warmer to significantly warmer than the winters of the past 6 years. In 1954, the average winter temperature was 36.3 degrees F. Compare this to the 31.12 degrees F and 32.15 degrees F for winters 2010 and 2011 respectively.What a reality check.

THE HOCKEY SCHTICK: New paper finds modern sea ice coverage in Canadian Arctic near highest levels of past 150 years

A new paper published in the European Geosciences Union journal Biogeosciences reconstructs sea ice coverage in the Beaufort Sea of the Canadian Arctic over the past 150 years and finds modern sea ice coverage [9.4 months per year] is significantly greater than during the period from ~ 1887-1945 [8.3 months per year]. Figure 4 of the paper shows modern sea ice coverage is amongst the highest levels of the entire 150 year record. The authors find that the reduced sea ice coverage from ~1887-1945 corresponded with reconstructed sea surface temperatures that were up to 3C warmer from 1885-1935 in comparison to the average modern temperature. According to the paper, sea ice coverage was dominated by natural variation from the Pacific Decadal Oscillation [PDO] and Arctic Oscillation [AO].

You can find this same grape production report info in many different reports. What it all adds up to is two things:

There was less sun, warmth, growing season.

Wines will be in shorter supply and at higher prices going forward.

I would also add that: The grapes are not lying, nor ‘adjusting their data’. They clearly state that “Hottest Ever” and even “Among the hottest 10″ is just bunk. We did not have 1/3 improvements in production (the inverse of a 1/4 loss now) in 2010 vs 2009 or 2008. The grapes are saying that there is something a bit bogus in the “hottest” claims.
