Record snowfall socks New York, storm leaves 1.7M powerless - NYPOST.comA rare October snowstorm took the Northeast by surprise today, setting a snowfall record in New York City and leaving half a million people across the region without power.
By 2 p.m., New York City had broken an October snow record with 1.3 inches recorded in Central Park, the National Weather Service said. The previous October record was set on Oct. 30, 1925, with 0.8 inches.
Parts of Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Massachusetts were also expected to set October records after the Nor'easter blows through.
...
Last year, the sanitation department paid out more than $75.5 million for snow cleanup following a string of blizzards and heavy snow storms. The city's snow removal budget was about $39 million.
According to the Weather Channel, snow usually arrives in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia in mid-December, while Boston does not usually see its first snowfall until late November.
Can Glaciers Melt In A Cooling World? | Real ScienceAccording to the logic of the EPA and other climate science geniuses, glaciers melting is an indication that the temperature is rising.
I guess that means that an ice cube will not melt at 90F, if earlier in the afternoon it was 100F.
...
90% of the world’s glaciers have been melting for 15,000 years, when Chicago was under a mile of ice.
In kindergarten or preschool we were taught that ice melts at 0C. But now we know from our top climate scientists that the melting point is not dependent on T, but rather on the first derivative dT/dt.

The press and the left love this guy, because he is completely unconstrained by reality when making up Apocalypse stories.
You Cannot Have It Both Ways The ocean-atmosphere system did not used to sit in benevolent stasis. Sea level did not used to remain ever stable. Droughts are not a product of modernity, and they are not increasing in number. And early-season snowstorms like the one unfolding in the Northeast were never proof of global warming. Not when they happened in the past, and not now.
To Mr. Gore, and his still passionate supporters, I say this: You cannot have it both ways. You cannot count the absence of snow as proof of your theories and the presence of snow as the proof of your theories.
We’re smarter than that. And you’re going have to do better, if you wish to win this debate.
Ryan Maue (ryanmaue) on TwitterThe current historic snowstorm wouldn't have occurred without man-made global warming. The record cold air is a result as well.

New York Expected to Get Two to Four Inches of Snow -- Daily IntelFall, we hardly knew ye: By daybreak tomorrow [Sunday], two to four inches of wet white stuff are expected to coat New York City. Homeless at unoccupied Occupy DC | Campaign 2012Conditions were miserable; 40 degrees, dark, windy, muddy, steady rain. The weather, predicted to deteriorate even more later, was enough to test the resolve of the most dedicated anti-capitalist.
The small park is filled with tents. At times there have seemed more tents than protesters, and indeed, a friend who has kept a close eye on Occupy DC suggested to me that many of the tents -- which convey the impression of a substantial, permanent protest -- are actually unoccupied. That's hard to prove, short of barging into randomly-selected tents. But even among the tents that are in use -- and I saw a total of four early-risers in the park Saturday morning -- there is the question of how many Occupy DC protesters are actually homeless people who have come to McPherson Square for shelter, a hot meal, and companionship.
Chris Huhne is not merely ignorant but positively dangerous - TelegraphThis confirmation of Huhne’s technical illiteracy, however, pales beside his suggestion earlier this month that, if motorway speed limits are raised to 80mph, it should only be for electric cars. (One might have thought Huhne would be wiser to steer away from any discussion of speed limits.)
The only electric model capable of such speeds, for a very short time before its batteries need recharging for several hours, is the Tesla, which retails at £87,000. Last quarter, electric car sales in Britain, despite a Government subsidy of £5,000 each, totalled 309. At this rate, to replace the UK’s existing car fleet, as Huhne wishes, would take nearly 23,000 years. And since the minister still hasn’t grasped that most of the electricity needed to charge their batteries comes from fossil fuels anyway, the savings in CO2 emissions, with transmission losses, would be zero. This man is not merely technically ignorant, he is positively dangerous.

This mania started with the conception that manmade global warming could be reduced by using fewer fossil fuels, which release CO2.

Told that all major Republican candidates for U.S. president save one – former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman – say they are not convinced that man-made carbon emissions are changing the climate, Robinson shook her head and said, “That does not do the United States any credit internationally.”
“I wish that some of the deniers from this country would actually go and spend a week in some of the communities that I’m in frequently, where the rains don’t come any more, or there’s prolonged drought and then flash-flooding,” Robinson said. “The climate shocks in poor communities are very, very significant. Warm Weather Increases Hospital Infections, And What That Might Mean For Climate Change | Wired Science | Wired.comMoreover, for every 10-degree Fahrenheit rise in mean temperature, there was a rise in infections with those same Gram-negatives. The increase varied from 3.5 percent for E. coli to 10.8 percent for Acinetobacter, independent of any changes in the season, the humidity or amounts of precipitation. Changes in temperature also affected S. aureus and MRSA, but much less: Those infections rose 2.2 percent for every 10-degree change.
Why should this be? Since hospitals in the United States are climate-controlled, the authors say it most likely represents the influence of the environment outside the hospital. Warmer weather leads to more bacterial growth; the presence of more bacteria increases the likelihood that some of them will be carried into hospitals by staff or visitors.

The BEST is the Worst: Global Temperature Measures Redux; Not![Tim Ball] Anyone who knows anything about global climate knows the Earth has generally warmed since the 1680s. Politics has made that period, which covers the Industrial Revolution, of climatic interest as people wanted to prove that human production of CO2 was causing warming. The problem, ignored by proponents, is that it has warmed naturally since the nadir of the Little Ice Age in the 1680s. The issue isn’t the warming, but the cause.

‘Green’ Steel Giveaway - By Henry Payne - Planet Gore - National Review OnlineBut there’s the larger question: When, asks Issa, did Obama’s Department of Green-Tech Winners and Losers start classifying steel as a green-auto component?
The Energy Department’s explanation — that steel production supports 260 jobs and 2,500 more in the construction industry — sounds more like a jobs program than “advanced technology research.”

Global warming: Middle East's vital wet winters are disappearing - CSMonitor.comThe team estimates that average precipitation from November through April in the region between 1971 and 2010 fell 6.8 percent below the average from 1902 to 1970.
The team began the hunt for causes.
...The team began using computer models to assess the effect of this ocean warming on the Mediterranean's winter precipitation.
The team found that warming all the oceans by a uniform 0.5 degrees Celsius (about 1 degree Fahrenheit) would dry out the eastern Mediterranean.
But the oceans haven't warmed uniformly. The greatest warming has come to tropical oceans. So the team focused next on warming the tropical oceans uniformly in their virtual world. The team got a Mediterranean-wide drying and a wetter northern Europe.
Still, neither of these experiments produced the strong positive North Atlantic Oscillation-like signal with enhanced drying to the south and heavier precipitation to the north.
But by adding another 0.5 degrees C to the Indian Ocean alone, model produced the strong north-south differences in precipitation associated with a positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation.

This isn't new -- there is a long history of irrational, pseudoscientific, or downright anti-scientific thinking and political culture here -- ironic, given how much our founding fathers like Benjamin Franklin valued science. Examples include creationism, moon-landing denialism, claims linking vaccines to autism, denials that tobacco causes cancer long after the science was in, and especially the denial of climate change and global warming. The Africa Carbon Exchange: The Commodification of the Environment | Think Africa PressWith these flaws in mind, the Carbon Trade is what sociologist Nico Stehr and climate scientist Hans Von Storch would call a "technocratic mode" of climate change mitigation: that is, one assuming total knowledge and control of both human behaviour and the climate system. Legal loopholes, limited bureaucratic controls, online security failures, huge uncertainty in estimating emissions and the sheer impossibility of accounting for every carbon-emitting activity testify to the fiction of such notions of control and knowledge. Nevertheless, in 2010, the value of the global carbon market was an estimated $120.9 billion, and some in the Global South are looking to take an active role in the carbon trade through institutions like the ACX.

Gross Errors in the IPCC-AR4 Report Regarding Past & Future Changes in Global Tropical Cyclone Activity - A Noble Disgrace | Originals[William M. Gray] This paper brings forth observational and theoretical evidence to show that rising levels of CO2 have not had any observable association with increases in global tropical cyclone frequency and intensity. In fact, levels have been trending downward over the last 20 years. This paper discusses why we should not be able to measure any potential future CO2-TC association for many decades, and if any such potential future relationship should ever be able to be isolated, it would be quite small. It also dissects the many observational and theoretical errors of the IPCC-AR4 concerning its reported past and likely future increases of global TC activity.
This paper extends the list of IPCC-AR4’s many questionable conclusions and misrepresentation beyond those that have already been earlier pointed out such as the Himalayas becoming snow-free by 2035, the Arctic Ocean possibly becoming ice-free in coming decades, and the possible coming Amazon rainforest destruction. The issuance of these erroneous IPCC reports does much damage. They should be terminated.

The Reference Frame: Climate alarmists as numerologistsOf course, any special importance attributed to the figure 350 ppm is nonsensical. They believe that random numbers that elevate the apparent "urgency" of the climate claims. However, the main thing that these numbers achieve is to prove that the climate alarmists are hopeless mental cripples in the eyes of the observers with IQ above 70.

How we know we’re warming the planet - The Washington PostBroadly speaking, here are two reasons why the Earth could be warming up. Either more heat is reaching the Earth’s surface, or else less heat is escaping out into space. On the first, there’s no evidence of a significant increase in heat reaching the earth. True, solar activity can shift from year to year. But satellite data shows that total solar irradiance has declined slightly in the past 30 years, even as the planet continues to warm. Scratch that theory.
So something’s keeping the heat in. Physicists have long known from lab experiments that greenhouse gases like carbon-dioxide can absorb certain frequencies of infrared radiation and scatter them back toward the Earth. We also know these gases are increasing in the atmosphere, largely due to the burning of fossil fuels (checking this involves some fairly straightforward chemistry). And, indeed, satellite data has shown that less and less infrared in the specific frequencies in question is escaping out into space, while more is bouncing back to the Earth’s surface. There's your culprit.
Now, it’s not entirely that simple (see here for the IPCC’s graphic of other, smaller factors influencing the climate), but that’s the basic story.
Subsidising the Argument » Climate ResistanceHowever, according to the IEA (PDF here), in 2008, the world produced fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas, peat) equivalent to 10,065 million tonnes of oil (Mtoe), but only 90.2Mtoe of energy from renewables (geothermal, solar, electricity and heat, wind). So although renewables only enjoyed a tenth (or so) of the subsides that fossil fuels received, fossil fuels accounted for 112 times as much energy. In other words, on a Mtoe basis, the renewable sector received nearly 13 times as much subsidisation as the fossil fuel sector.
Man-made global warming: Why many of us are skeptical [Part 1] | Dennis Prager | Jewish JournalIn the belief that there are people on the left who are more interested in understanding the right rather than in simply dismissing its decency, I would like to briefly explain why many thoughtful people are skeptical of the claims made on behalf of global warming. By “global warming” I am referring to the claims of Al Gore that man-made carbon dioxide emissions are causing dramatic increases in the Earth’s temperatures; increases that will devastate much of the Earth.
Countries must plan for climate refugees: report | Reuters(Reuters) - The world's governments and relief agencies need to plan now to resettle millions of people expected to be displaced by climate change, an international panel of experts said on Thursday.

McCloy to mount climate class action against council - Newcastle HeraldHUNTER businessman Jeff McCloy says he will mount a class action against Lake Macquarie City Council for devaluing waterfront properties with its climate change policy.
Mr McCloy, who owns a waterfront property at Belmont, said the council must explain what scientific evidence it had to back up its claims about rising sea levels and the effects of climate change.
‘‘My current view is they will have a class action against them for reducing the value of our properties,’’ Mr McCloy said. ‘‘I figure I’ll get a class action going and take the idiots to court, I’m serious.’’
Defending the Uncertainty Monster paper | Climate Etc.We clearly disagree with X et al., and we believe that our position is justified by our arguments. We are not the only people that are unconvinced by the IPCC’s attribution assessment. The existence of this disagreement is not surprising given the complexity of the issue. The existence of this disagreement implies, at the very least, one of two things: 1) the IPCC AR4 has done an inadequate job in articulating the evidence for their position; or 2) the uncertainty is much greater than acknowledged by the IPCC AR4.

Science, Ridicule and Redemption | The Resilient EarthLook to the advocates of anthropogenic global warming—they are not open-minded and they certainly are not humble. Time after time, new observations have shown current climate theory to be inadequate. Instead of empirical evidence, climate scientists produce computer models. So, the next time someone tries to claim global warming is settled science because it is the “consensus view,” just remember the impossible quasicrystals. And when those brave scientists who dissent from climate change doctrine are called deniers and worse than criminals by alarmist blatherskites, recall the travails of Daniel Shechtman and his eventual triumph.

More than 95 per cent of those scientists present at every step of the climate debate for significant portions of their careers agree on at least the basic point that by-products of fossil fuel burning can significantly affect climate.

But what we are seeing in climate change is that the matters of science continue to be questioned in "debates" long after the climate change trial has ended and the verdict reached. Scientists find themselves in the absurd situation where commentators and politicians are calling on Australians to discard the scientific consensus and decide between mainstream and contrarian views through 10-minute public debates and sound bites.

Environmental consultancy market shrinks for second consecutive yearThe UK environmental consultancy market is continuing to decline as new research shows the sector contracted by 8.4% in 2010, losing £113m in value to now stand at £1,230m.
This is the market's second consecutive decline after more than two decades of unbroken growth, according to a report from Environment Analyst. The decline was chiefly due to government austerity and the curtailing of local authority expenditure.
As a result of this, the top 32 firms in the sector have collectively shedded just under 1,000 jobs - and the prospect of future growth looks uncertain as the market is predicted to flatline

How to get the message across on climate changeFor many scientists working in the field of climate research, one of the most alarming trends has nothing to do with the climate itself: It’s the poll numbers showing that even as scientific projections of global climate change get ever more certain, public perceptions about climate change are getting ever more skeptical.
Why is there such a huge — and growing — disconnect? John Sterman, the Jay W. Forrester Professor of Management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management, says there are specific characteristics of climate change that make it unusually difficult for people to grasp. But the good news, he says, is that there are approaches that can help bridge that gap in understanding.
For example, Sterman’s group has developed climate simulators to help policymakers, business leaders, the media and the public learn about the dynamics of climate change and the consequences of the choices we must make.
Truth in advertising does not work with politicians | Tulsa BeaconThe claims of Al Gore and his global warming terrorists are just that and are intended to scare us into accepting massive controls on our way of life that would vastly lower our standard of living. The claim that carbon dioxide is a “greenhouse gas” is likewise totally false. The removal of this gas from the air would result in the reduction of plant life and thus the reduction of the oxygen that all animal life, including humans, must have to exist.
There is ample proof that many, if not most, of the wild claims made in his movie are totally false and the examples he used were carefully and falsely crafted to attain the maximum scare value.

Corruption within the climate-change industry explains some of the sudden turnoff. "Climategate" -- the unauthorized 2009 release of private emails from the Climatic Research Unit in the United Kingdom -- revealed that many of the world's top climate scientists were knee-deep in manipulating scientific evidence to support preconceived conclusions and personal agendas. Shrill warnings about everything from melting Himalayan glaciers to shrinking polar bear populations turned out not always to be supported by scientific facts.

It seems that Dr. Muller made some comments that seemed a bit skeptical about climate change a few years back and he rapidly became the darling of those who do not believe the mountain of scientific evidence that the planet is warming. The skeptic numbers have continued to diminish and among those with a background in atmospheric physics, only about 2% are in disagreement with the consensus. The overwhelming majority of those who think that the planet is not getting warmer, or that the warming is a natural fluctuation, have little scientific background.

Rather than delivering a death blow to skepticism, the media has merely invented and shredded an insignificant straw man.

Not only do events like Climategate injure the credibility of global warming science, they are also disruptive to the individual scientists. “[Opponents] use FOIA to access information that is freely available, mostly because by law you have to respond to it," says Mandia, "One of the tactics is to bury them with paper.” Mandia felt the weight of this attention in 2010 when he was threatened with a lawsuit from Christopher Mongton, who works with Heartland Institute, a conservative non-profit that denies global warming (and who have worked with tobacco giant Philip Morris in the past). “I’ve got two small children, I teach classes," thought Mandia, when confronted by the suit, "now I understand why these guys are doing this. If they keep you busy, you can’t do your research. If you can’t do your research, you can’t advance the science.”

“The trend will continue until there are serious repercussions," says Mann, who is preparing to return to court on November 1, "be they in the financial or public relations realm, for the organizations and front groups that fund these ongoing attacks.”
