C3: The Obama Legacy: Democracy Perverted by "Green" Corruption?
Obama and the Democrats want Americans to believe that their policies are about saving the world from global warming and at the same time creating green jobs. Unfortunately, the science proves that cutting U.S. CO2 emissions will do nothing to global temperatures, and what about green jobs? The "green jobs" farce is, well,.... er, a farce.

Dr Pachauri finds the time to travel the world non-stop, speak at conferences, and nip back to India to play for his amateur cricket team. But if he is too busy to read and master his own report on the world’s most important challenge, shouldn’t we look for someone more focused on the task in hand?
Bill Maher: The Environment Is The Ultimate Health Care Issue (VIDEO)
Bill Maher called the environment the "ultimate health care issue" Friday night during "Real Time" and argued that our future depends on our ability to stop global warming. But some on his panel weren't so convinced.

Conservative talk radio host Amy Holmes, actor Hill Harper, and former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson weighed in, with Harper being the sole panelist to agree with Maher's assessment. Johnson said he believes in climate change, but that its effects have been greatly exaggerated. While Holmes called herself a skeptic, and argued that the science behind the topic is not settled. She described it as a "raging debate."

Maher was blown away by Holmes' skepticism and shot down Johnson for opposing cap and trade legislation.

Department of Climate Change behind on environment
The federal government's Department of Climate Change may be at the cutting edge of environmental policy development but it is well behind when it comes to its own effect on the environment.

As a result, it is seeking approval to spend $20.5 million fitting out a new building which will have ''state of the art'' green features including passive air handling systems, photovoltaic arrays on the roof and facades and sophisticated energy management and lighting controls.

Sequestering carbon dioxide in a closed underground volume | The SPPI Blog
Source:  Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering
Abstract
...
Published reports on the potential for sequestration fail to address the necessity of storing CO2 in a closed system. Our calculations suggest that the volume of liquid or supercritical CO2 to be disposed cannot exceed more than about 1% of pore space. This will require from 5 to 20 times more underground reservoir volume than has been envisioned by many, and it renders geologic sequestration of CO2 a profoundly non-feasible option for the management of CO2 emissions.

ARE WE READY TO PAY A TAX ON LIFE?
All this was inspired by the principle-which is quite true in itself-that in the big lie there is always a certain force of credibility; because the broad masses of a nation are always more easily corrupted in the deeper strata of their emotional nature than consciously or voluntarily; and thus in the primitive simplicity of their minds they more readily fall victims to the big lie than the small lie, since they themselves often tell small lies in little matters but would be ashamed to resort to large-scale falsehoods. It would never come into their heads to fabricate colossal untruths, and they would not believe that others could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously.

Even though the facts which prove this to be so may be brought clearly to their minds, they will still doubt and waver and will continue to think that there may be some other explanation. For the grossly impudent lie always leaves traces behind it, even after it has been nailed down, a fact which is known to all expert liars in this world and to all who conspire together in the art of lying. -Adolf Hitler , Mein Kampf, vol. The question, he added, is not whether the Earth will warm up, but by how much.

This is where the leaked emails come in. With global warming fuelling a resurgence of geopolitical tensions, climate science has become a weapon in a war of disinformation. Whatever lapses in intellectual probity they might reveal, the messages are being used to obscure a mass of evidence showing that anthropogenic climate change is real, and may be occurring more rapidly than previously believed. Who knows, maybe in that dust up they could even find some common ground that would point to a new path forward.

Not least of all, can these claims be tested? By which I mean that if a claim is made to the effect that CO2 traps heat for instance, can this claim be tested? The answer of course is yes it can. The purpose of this book then is to address these claims or rather accusations against us with regards our CO2 emissions with a rational, logical, guilt free and above all, questioning mind.

Namely, that the planet's temperature is warming and man is contributing to it.

A New York-based spokeswoman for WTVT, which is owned by Fox Corp., said the forecaster would not comment.

Perhaps that's because last year, Dellegatto's offhand comments about global warming during a forecast drew the ire of liberal lion and MSNBC pundit Keith Olbermann, who accused the meteorologist of slipping "denial propaganda" into the "local freaking weather forecast."

Olbermann said Dellegatto noted a cold snap in several cities, quoting the forecaster saying, "I just think the whole global warming theory is tough to see based on current calculations." For that statement, Olbermann named the Tampa forecaster in his nightly Worst Persons in the World segment.

Looking forward, the critical category will be those people who accept climate change is occurring but think natural cycles – not humans - are more likely the cause. That position allows people to reject green measures as futile. The size of that group is large, perhaps 30-50%, but varies a lot between polls, probably due to different questions. The IPcC's landmark 2007 report concluded that it was 90% certain that we are causing warming. Whether people can be persuaded of that may be the key to whether meaningful action on climate change actually happens.

Harald (polar guide at the Ice Base) then presented a lecture on cold weather injuries and other potential hazards relating to the polar environment. Signs, symptoms and treatment of frost bite was the main focus, with various photos of what to look out for and what to avoid. Losing fingers and toes is something that can be avoided if one is careful, but is of concern to us all.

One of the reasons for the scientists to undertake this training is to give them confidence in living and working in the polar environment. It also comes down to necessity should a member of staff that they’re working with have an accident. So, erecting tents and firing up mountain stoves to heat up water is part of basic survival training. All easy enough in more temperate climates, but at -30°C, with a wind blowing, little dexterity in finger movement due to fairly sizable mittens and a potential casualty to deal with is testing.

Americans are having trouble telling the difference between relatively small criticisms of the science or scientists -- minor mistakes in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s 2007 report or the release of overheated private exchanges among a few climate scientists, for example -- and the solid case for the bottom-line on global warming: that it’s extremely likely it’s happening, it’s extremely likely that it’s at least partially our fault, and, if unabated, it’s extremely likely to have some rather unpleasant consequences.

The international consensus on global warming has seemingly experienced a spectacular slow-motion train wreck over the last few months, with “climategate” reports piling up in public debate like derailing rail cars filmed in freeze frame. The fascination for on-lookers, however, is that the science itself is largely blameless. Instead, the pile-up stands as a case study in how not to wage a political battle. And make no mistake; the attacks on climate science are pure politics. We have seen attacks on science before, just pick your favorite example: smoking, toxic pollution, seat belts, etc. However, until there is a fundamental reframing of the climate science debate, one that illuminates the politics, the current round of attacks will continue to enjoy success.

There is no denying what your eyes can see. Last fall’s record setting flood in Atlanta was a textbook example of the kind of impact that should be highlighted.

Energy and Global Warming News for March 12th: China finds itself awash in wind turbine factories
China’s massive investment in wind turbines, fueled by its government’s renewable energy goals, has caused the value of the turbines to tumble more than 30 percent from 2004 levels, the vice president of Shanghai Electric Group Corp. said yesterday.

There are now “too many plants,” Lu Yachen said, noting that China is idling as much as 40 percent of its turbine factories.
Climate change and poisonous chemicals focus of new UN study
According to Fatoumata Keita-Ouane, a scientist with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) who is leading the study, some data suggest that higher temperatures can make wildlife more sensitive to exposure to certain pollutants.

In the Arctic region, climate change can be expected to alter the exposure levels of marine mammals such as seals or the polar bear to toxic substances through a variety of means, including the melting of the ice caps.

Have the hacked emails of climate scientists changed anything? While climate skeptics have pounced on the disclosure, scientists say nothing about the science has changes. “It’s a complete non-story,” says Achim Steiner, who heads to UN Environment Programme. He called the whole affair a “desperate attempt” by some to discredit the science. The science is all public, all transparent, he says. And besides, “thousands of scientists are working every day to prove each other wrong.”

It is a book about principal components, data mining and confidence intervals—subjects that have never before been made thrilling. It is the biography of a graph.

The American Spectator : Those Climate Pugilists

Rock-solid science is built with a firm foundation of verifiable and repeatable tests, with trustworthy facts and figures as their sources. The Whinergate scientists employedfudged data and their personal agendas to belligerently promote a fabricated cause, amplified by their similarly unpopular anti-capitalist cohorts and ever-expanding government. Now they profess surprise at thegrowing resistance to their mission.

They still have not learned that all the money, media and muscle at their disposal have not produced sound science, or a victory. Tactics may provide a temporary advantage, but facts usually win, even though sometimes it takes a while.

PostPartisan - Why are climate scientists losing the American public?

Americans are having trouble telling the difference between relatively small criticisms of the science or scientists -- minor mistakes in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's 2007 report or the release of overheated private exchanges among a few climate scientists, for example -- and the solid case for the bottom-line on global warming: that it's extremely likely it's happening, it's extremely likely that it's at least partially our fault, and, if unabated, it's extremely likely to have some rather unpleasant consequences.
Wind resistance
In a paper published online Feb. 22 in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, Wang and Prinn suggest that using wind turbines to meet 10 percent of global energy demand in 2100 could cause temperatures to rise by one degree Celsius in the regions on land where the wind farms are installed, including a smaller increase in areas beyond those regions. Their analysis indicates the opposite result for wind turbines installed in water: a drop in temperatures by one degree Celsius over those regions. The researchers also suggest that the intermittency of wind power could require significant and costly backup options, such as natural gas-fired power plants.

Despite the organized effort by deniers to confuse the public, the scientific consensus on the causes and severity of climate change is actually far more robust today than was the case for lead in the 1970s. The EPA was right to act then, and the EPA is right to act now.

The Reference Frame: Richard Lindzen v. Hadi Dowlatabadi
An interesting aspect is that Richard Lindzen, the skeptic, and Hadi Dowlatabadi, a consensus scientist, agreed about pretty much everything. The changes of the climate are unspectacular, the Earth has seen much bigger changes of temperature and CO2, 600 ppm of CO2 wouldn't do anything visible, and so on.

Paradoxically, it was the journalist who was the only advocate of AGW panic. For example, he would repeat that there is a "general wisdom" that 350 ppm is a huge problem for the Earth. Where the hell did he hear that it is a "general wisdom"?

New fraud promotion from Cornell's Rosenberg and Fitzpatrick

A few years ago on this blog, I spend a lot of time helping to expose Cornell's highly-publicized, peer-reviewed, fraudulent claim of the Arkansas rediscovery of a living Ivory-billed woodpecker.

Two key figures in that fraud have evidently moved on to promote the global warming hoax:

Coastal and ocean birds most at risk from climate change, report says - San Jose Mercury News
"There are a significant number of birds that are facing real, immediate threats," said John Fitzpatrick, executive director of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. "Climate change clearly is going to affect some more than others."
Feds: U.S. birds declining due to changing climate - Science Fair: Science and Space News - USATODAY.com
"Birds are excellent indicators of the health of our environment, and right now they are telling us an important story about climate change," said Dr. Kenneth Rosenberg, director of Conservation Science at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, in a statement on the report. "Many species of conservation concern will face heightened threats, giving us an increased sense of urgency to protect and conserve vital bird habitat."
Flashback: Fitz"patrick" STILL selling the Luneau video?!
This sounds like fraud to me:
Wednesday night, Dr. Fitzpatrick reviewed the evidence for the bird's continued existence. He showed the brief film and analyzed it. The bird in the film certainly looked, to an untrained backyard birder like myself, like an Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Perhaps the most telling piece of evidence for me was the analysis of wingbeats that matched exactly with what was known of the wingbeats from the 1940s birds.
Flashback: Deliberate deception?
As I wrote previously, Rosenberg played some ARU kent calls, failing to mention that several searchers reported hearing and seeing blue jays making sounds very much like this in this area. Afterwards, he said "...we, um, believe they may very likely be an Ivory-billed Woodpecker".

In my opinion, Rosenberg's failure to even mention the critical blue jay information seems like a deliberate attempt to deceive the NPR listeners.
[Just how lousy was Cornell's Ivory-bill "evidence"? Check out these pictures]
I think that all eight of these pictures are probably just artifacts of an unfocused camera. I think that Cornell might suggest that two of them are views of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker. Here's a challenge for you--which two are Ivory-bills, and why?
By the way, the Ivory-bill controversy contained a lot of the same elements of the global warming controversy--an absolutely lousy "body of evidence", ridiculous models, believers versus realists, bloggers vs mainstream media, appeals to authority and peer-review, etc etc.

As I watch the global warming hoax crumble, I feel like I've "seen this movie before".
The Hockey Schtick: MUST SEE: New Richard Lindzen Debate

- Bishop Hill blog - An interesting medical paper
I chanced upon this abstract, which somehow seems very pertinent to the discussions we've been having on this site. If anyone can lay their hands on the full paper I'd be interested.
In the last 20 years there has been a progressive decline in the honesty of scientific communications. In science truth should be the primary value, and truthfulness the core evaluation. Everyone should be honest at all times and about everything, but especially scientists. On the contrary, the activity stops being science and becomes something else: Zombie science, a science that is dead but it is artificially kept moving by a continuous infusion of funding. Many are the causes of dishonesty in science, for example scientists may be subjected to such pressure that they are forced to be dishonest. The corruption of science has been amplified by the replacement of "peer usage" with "peer review" as the major mechanism of scientific evaluation, thus creating space into which dishonesty has expanded. The hope is in an ethical revolution capable of re-establishing the primary purpose of science: the pursuit of truth.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a state legislator go toe-to-toe on the climate change issue with an alarmist, but the Fox News affiliate in Salt Lake City caught that very thing on camera this week. On Wednesday after a student-led global warming rally at the legislature, State Rep. Here’s the full discussion, in which the skeptic Noel is surrounded by environoiacs, including one who kept trying to butt in.

Global Warming Alarmists have more reason to be alarmed thanks to Chris Horner's ongoing investigation of the climate science community. The more Chris digs, the uglier the science gets. PJTV's Danika Quinn talks to the "Red Hot Lies" author about the latest troubling revelation. The data NASA scientists use to calculate global warming, it turns out, is totally tainted. Why does the mainstream media continue to treat the institution as credible? Horner has some thoughts.

“Shut-eyed Denial” « Climate Audit
Most tasty quote (my emphasis):
Well, it happens. People make mistakes in science. Corrections get made. That’s how it works, is it not? Few papers get such scrutiny as this had. But that is an even more worrying thought: how much dodgy science is being published without the benefit of an audit by Mcintyre’s ilk? As a long-time champion of science, I find the reaction of the scientific establishment more shocking than anything. The reaction was not even a shrug: it was shut-eyed denial.

Kerry-Graham-Lieberman: The Tax Formerly Known As Cap-and-Trade | GlobalWarming.org
According to earlier reports, Graham et al. may propose to combine an electric utility sector cap-and-trade program with carbon taxes on transportation fuels. If so, then Kyotoism is truly dead. Electric utilities are gung-ho for cap-and-trade only if it’s economy-wide, so they can sell the free emission permits they would get under a bill like Waxman-Markey to other sectors receiving fewer or zero freebies.
An Idea I Had Too Late | Climate Skeptic
The idea I had too late is that three years ago, when I had the time, I should have put the whole IPCC report on the web in some sort of Wiki or 2-column format (almost like a Medieval gloss) we could have linked and collected challenges to each individual statement and attribution. I think a couple of people are working towards this right now, but I kick myself for not thinking of it earlier. What a resource we would have now!

...it's clear that they believe that cap and trade is so politically unpalatable at this point that they need to throw it out. But let's set the politics aside for a moment. Can senators defend their plan's environmental goals, if the mission is to cut carbon pollution and create jobs in clean energy? The answer seems to be no, at least according to Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.).

Speaking at the Progressive Media Summit on the Hill on Wednesday, Boxer maintained the bill she wrote with Kerry that passed out of her committee last November--which looks a lot like the Waxman-Markey bill passed by the House--is the "gold standard" for climate legislation. "I'm for my bill all the way," said Boxer. "That's the best way, an economy-wide bill." Politically though, she acknowledged that her bill doesn't stand a snowball's chance in a warming planet of passing in 2010, hence the desire to pass a bill with much lower ambitions. "I'm not going to make an argument that the other approach is better," said Boxer. But, she added, "Is it better than doing nothing? Absolutely."
