Call it a refreshing reminder that green dreams to remake mankind must still get by mankind’s Congressional representatives.
Skeptic's Corner: Gonna need more bracing
Pretty disengenuious to come out with a study now justifying colder temperatures that were not projected in their original models that were used to justify the alarm of global warming. The fact that the study is being done by the people who are responsible for the temperature records we rely on for determining the validity of their alarm, is in itself alarming to say the least, as if James Hansen wasn't bad enough. Instead of trying to find out why the models are wrong they continue to prop up their failed hypothesis with more studies to explain away the failures of their original hypothesis, ain't science great.
The Associated Press: Calif. wildfire imperils Santa Barbara; climate scam promoted
[Tom] Morse, the executive director of the environmental group Global Preservation Projects, said he's not surprised by so many fires, blaming it on global warming.

"Temperatures are rising and humidity levels are dropping. It means more fires," he said.

Global warming can't be blamed for specific fires, but it creates conditions that foster larger and more frequent wildfires, scientists say.

"A warming climate encourages wildfires through a longer summer period that dries fuels, promoting easier ignition and faster spread," the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change wrote in 2007.

Critics unimpressed by Obama's proposed budget cuts - Politics AP - MiamiHerald.com
The administration's book of cuts and terminations comprises 121 programs, ranging from ending production of the F-22 fighter jet, which costs about $3.5 billion a year, to eliminating "local government climate-change grants," which the budget office said lack "focus" and which cost about $10 million.

Budget veterans recalled that such hit lists are as old as some of the programs themselves. President Ronald Reagan, who was elected in 1980 after railing against government bloat, quickly issued his own hit list, but after eight years in office, only four programs had been eliminated.
Climate scam pays: NASA Announces Fiscal Year 2010 Budget
WASHINGTON, May 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NASA announced Thursday an $18.69 billion budget for fiscal year 2010 to advance Earth science, complete the International Space Station, explore the solar system and conduct aeronautics research. The budget request represents an increase of $903.6 million, or 5 percent, above funding provided in the fiscal year 2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act. All totaled, an additional $2 billion has been added to NASA's 2009 and 2010 budgets under the Obama administration.

NASA's fiscal year 2010 request funds a robust program to continue the agency's missions of exploration and research. It supports the administration's commitment to deploy a global climate change research and monitoring system. It funds a strong program of space exploration involving humans and robots with the goal of returning Americans to the moon and exploring other destinations. And it supports the safe flight of the space shuttle to complete assembly of the International Space Station by the shuttle's planned retirement.

Biofuels Bill: Federal Subsidies Will Top $400 Billion, Enviros Say - Environmental Capital - WSJ
Replacing oil with home-grown biofuels is already proving to be an environmental headache for Washington. Fixing that could turn out to be an expensive headache, as well.

Environmental groups Earth Track and Friends of the Earth just put out a study quantifying biofuels subsidies through 2022, as the U.S. plans to massively increase production of biofuels. The upshot? The cost to taxpayers would be about $420 billion over that period, or an average of about $28 billion a year.
EPW FACT OF THE DAY: ‘IF A TREE FALLS IN THE FOREST…’
The $300 million effort, dubbed the ‘We Campaign,’ was spearheaded by Gore’s new climate outfit, the Alliance for Climate Protection. It features, among other tidbits, heartwarming commercials of Newt Gingrich and Nancy Pelosi, sitting side-by-side on a couch, calling for climate action. Another ad, narrated by actor William Macy, makes parallels to America’s historical challenges. “We didn't wait for someone else to storm the beaches of Normandy,” Macy said in the ad. With all of this fancy ad-making, one wonders: since Gore’s highfalutin campaign commenced, has the public noticed? Does the public care? Has the public bought into Gore’s apocalyptic predictions?

FACT: According to Frank Newport, editor of the Gallup Poll, the answer is a resounding, unequivocal ‘no.’
Barton, Walden Seek Answers from EPA on Cap-and-Trade Fraud Case in California
WASHINGTON – U.S. Reps. Joe Barton, R-Texas, ranking member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Greg Walden, R-Ore., ranking member of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee, today asked EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson for information on EPA’s oversight of a pollution credit trading market as it relates to a closed criminal case, U.S. v. Anne Masters Sholtz.

The case involved the sale of counterfeit pollution credits in a cap-and-trade program gone wrong. The Regional Clean Air Incentives Market was established by the South Coast Air Quality Management District in California.

“We believe this case has great relevance in the context of pending legislation on climate change,” Barton and Walden said. “It is important that Congress assess not only whether EPA has an adequate regulatory regime and surveillance capacity over pollution credit trading but also whether there are any factors (e.g., resources, legal restrictions) constraining federal law enforcement in combating criminal cap-and-trade fraud.”

Virgin sees space tourism as just the beginning
LONDON (Reuters) - Long-haul trips could be made in spaceships instead of planes in 20 years' time if Virgin's efforts to commercialize space travel succeed, the president of Virgin Galactic told Reuters in an interview.

Will Whitehorn said Virgin's plans to take tourists into space were just a first stage that could open up a range of possibilities for the company including space science, computer server farms in space and replacing long-haul flights.

Virgin Galactic, part of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, has collected $40 million in deposits from would-be space tourists including physicist Stephen Hawking and ex-racing driver Niki Lauda, and hopes to start commercial trips within two years.

Whitehorn said the bookings from 300 people willing to pay $200,000 each for a space flight had convinced Virgin the venture was viable. It is currently running test flights and hopes soon to win a license from the Federal Aviation Authority.
If the rich people are allowed fossil-fueled space joyrides, might anyone else complain about petty restrictions on their lightbulbs or choice of car?
SF Environmental Policy Examiner: Global warming, common sense and expert opinion
If global climate change is a real problem, then the communication strategy of its advocates is pathetic, and may lose them all the good will built up over decades of environmental struggle. It is pathetic because it resembles in all its shotgun approach and hysterical pronouncements nothing more than a con game. It is reprehensible--almost criminal--in its attempts to demonize everyone who disagrees with them, to state that all skeptics are deniers in the pay of the energy industry.

Nobody is arguing that the greenhouse effect is controversial. Nobody is arguing that CO2 is a greenhouse gas, and that we are emitting more of it. But only computer models are making the case that this will cause catastrophe--and the data isn't good enough for computer models to be accurate. Your case needs more, if you want people of common sense to believe you.

If it's real, get serious. If you don't know, just say so. And come forth now with a set of conditions that you agree would prove your theory wrong. Follow the rules of science.
Global Warming Bill Moving Through Congress - Cattle Network
...here's the rub. The legislators that control the Subcommittee (and the Energy and Commerce Committee) appear to be staging the testimony on the legislation so that there isn't a legitimate debate. At the April 24 hearing, former Vice President Al Gore testified that global warming legislation was akin to the Marshall Plan and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (which, by the way, his father voted against as a U.S. Senator). Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), a member of the Energy and Commerce Committee, invited the United Kingdom's Lord Christopher Monckton, a former science advisor to British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, to testify along with Gore. However, the Democrats in control of the hearing cancelled his invitation when his plane arrived in D.C. on April 23. Why? They didn't want Gore humiliated. Monckton has published a mathematical proof that there is no "climate crisis" in a major, peer-reviewed academic journal — Physics and Society. The article is titled, "Climate Sensitivity Reconsidered" and demonstrates that a doubling of the concentration of carbon dioxide compared with pre-industrial levels will increase the global mean surface temperature by little more that 1 degree fahrenheit — a meaningless increase. That's far less than the 6 degree increase that the United Nation's climate panel (IPCC) concluded in its 2007 climate assessment report.

He noted that while “science blogs are booming,” there is a lot of competition in the blogosphere from commentators who promote the anti-evolution, anti-global warming, anti-vaccine mindset. “Polemics are more important than accuracy,” said Mooney, and the biggest problem is that people tend to go online looking for things that reinforce their own point of view...

Gregory Murphy: Cap and Trade Is Genocide
Financial interests centered in the City of London and on Wall Street are pushing for the United States to destroy itself by the adoption of a cap-and-trade scheme, based on the hoax of Al Gore's global warming. Part of this policy of cap and trade calls for the deployment of low energy-density, intermittent, renewable energies, like wind and solar, to replace existing baseline sources like nuclear and coal.

The reality of this policy of cutting or capping carbon dioxide emissions is that there will be an explicit limit on the amount of energy produced, and there will be a limit as to what type of sources will be available to produce this limited amount of energy. By limiting the amount of energy available for medical purposes, heating of homes, cooking, and providing freshwater, cap and trade will set the stage for genocide.

Obama’s Budget: Same Energy Blueprint, but What About [that $646 billion in climate scam money]?
Getting back to the question of money – and in particular revenue from a cap-and-trade program. President Obama earmarked $646 billion (at least) from cap-and-trade for clean-energy investment and tax rebates. But that assumed that 100% of the carbon-emissions permits would be sold to industry.

The House is struggling to muster enough support for its climate and energy bill, and compromises appear to be in order. Bloomberg reported today that the House Energy and Commerce Committee is mulling giving away to industry more than half the emissions permits.

That wouldn’t necessarily derail the $15 billion a year in planned clean-energy investment. But it would take a chunk out of the money the government planned to use for the “Making Work Pay” tax break, which would put money raised by fighting climate change back in families’ hands.

The article, in its various forms carried by many news services, states “The famous peak stood 4807 metres tall on the French-Italian border, but has been growing since 2003 at a faster rate in recent months. The volume of ice on Mont Blanc’s slopes has almost doubled since 2005 to reach 24,100 cubic metres this year, and snow has built up faster due to greater frequency of winds and higher temperatures in the summer, believed to be caused by global warming.” We learn that “Last month, surveyors from France’s Haute-Savoie region measured the Alps’ tallest peak at 4,810.90 metres (15,784 feet)” and that “The height as well as the volume of Mont Blanc has increased considerably, because the snow has massed on the summit over the last two years.” The article goes on to say this is unique to Mont Blanc given its height, but when all we hear is that mountain glaciers are retreating, we again find this interesting piece with evidence quite to the contrary.

U.S. environmentalists will closely watch B.C.'s election results Tuesday to track the fate of the continent's first carbon tax.

As with many B.C. green groups that back the Liberal-imposed carbon tax and have criticized NDP opposition to it, there's a sense south of the border the policy measure may become politically toxic if the Campbell government falls.

The carbon tax went into effect last July at a rate of 2.4 cents on a litre of gasoline. It rises to 3.6 cents this July and will reach 4.8 cents by 2010. Diesel and heating fuels such as natural gas are also covered by equivalent amounts based on the amount of greenhouse gases emitted.

The NDP cite government advisors who suggest the tax may have to rise to 24 cents a litre to be effective.
American Chronicle | Cap-And-Trade Energy Tax Will Cause Redistribution of Wealth among States and Working Families
WASHINGTON. D.C. – An analysis of the economic impact of the Waxman/Markey cap-and-trade bill by House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform Republican staff has found that the legislation creates a regressive tax and that economic studies likely underestimate the full cost of the proposal to the economy.

Last year, then Presidential candidate Barack Obama said, "Under my plan of a cap-and-trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Businesses will have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that cost on to the consumers." While cap-and-trade defenders now try to downplay the costs, the report finds that the President´s earlier prediction is likely correct.

But since that's hard and there's an overwhelming scientific consensus, it's much easier to reframe this as "Al Gore's thing" since people who don't like Al Gore will be strongly predisposed to also dislike his ideas (which in itself isn't very rational -- if someone you don't like says the sky is blue, that doesn't make it yellow, and a good idea should still be a good wherever it comes from).

AFP: 'Cap and trade' to hurt America in the wallet: analyst
WASHINGTON (AFP) — A proposed US market to trade rights to emit greenhouse gases would adversely affect both consumers and producers at a time of national economic distress, according to testimony from an independent government agency Thursday.

"Under a cap-and-trade program, consumers would ultimately bear most of the costs of emission reductions," said Douglas Elmendorf, director of the Congressional Budget Office, in testimony to the Senate Finance Committee.

"Higher prices for energy-intensive goods and services would lead to a variety of consequences for different industries, regions of the country, and income groups," he said.

Do You Trust the Government to Take Your Money and Give it All Back to You? (Part 4 in a 10-Part Series) » The Foundry
The reason cap-and-trade and carbon tax have been used interchangeably in the global warming debate is because they are essentially the same thing: a massive tax on energy. Although a more direct approach would be to tax carbon dioxide, it does not make it any more acceptable. But this tax is different because the revenue generated will be given back to the people, presumably.

When has that happened? Can we honestly believe every dollar extracted from Americans from a cap-and-trade or a carbon tax will be given back in the form of a rebate or a tax cut?

Again, what's the COST of not throwing money at harebrained non-solutions for non-problems?
But if we're going to be honest about the economics here, then you have to assess not only the costs of doing something, but also of doing nothing. And if you're going to argue against reforms, then you have to argue why the consequences of inaction are a preferable outcome, not merely why action might prove expensive or uncertain. Choosing the status quo is, after all, a choice.

In this latest index, the majority of businesses (83%) said the target to reduce CO2 emissions by 80% by 2050 was unrealistic. Attitudes on the potential commercial opportunities of a small carbon footprint are equally downbeat; only 31% think new business will occur as a result of reducing emissions, compared to 47% in npower's 2008 index.

The findings also reveal that the economic downturn is leading businesses to prioritise finances over CO2 reduction; 97% said they are currently more concerned with reducing costs than emissions.

Unfortunately, Bolivian President Evo Morales was unable to participate. The Bolivian Foreign Minister (FM), David Choquehuanca, stood in for the president...
...
Mr. Choquehuanca's presentation contrasted capitalism and socialism as they related to Mother Earth. Capitalism uses Mother Earth for profit and personal wealth he said, whereas socialism uses Mother Earth for sustenance and life. He asserted that the capitalist system was in crisis, and was a symptom of the imbalance between regions, nations and people. The crisis, he said, was due to an imbalance between man and nature, and a return to the laws of nature is the way to recovery. A full recovery requires the laws of man be replaced by the laws of nature because the laws of man disregard the laws of nature. He said it was time for a reorientation of society so man and Mother Earth can once again live in harmony under the laws of nature, and that the Third World can not afford to continue to subsidize the First World.

The foreign minister's presentation was interrupted by applause several times and he was given a standing ovation at the conclusion.
Senate committee urges green targets redesign - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
A Senate committee has called on the Federal Government not to proceed with its planned emissions trading scheme.

The Opposition-dominated committee has also called on the Government to consider nuclear power as a way of reducing Australia's greenhouse emissions.

Committee chairman Mathias Cormann says the scheme should be redesigned and rewritten.

"We think that the Government has completely ignored the fact that at times it may be better to increase emissions domestically in Australia if that means an overall reduction in global emissions," he said.

April 22, 2009: Long winters kill Alaskan moose
Kavalok noted that this is the time of year when moose, weakened from a long winter, die all over Southcentral Alaska. Biologists say it is natural for significant numbers of moose to die or be found dead every spring in Anchorage, Wasilla, Kenai and other communities.

The biological term for these deaths is "winter kill."

Though moose browse the twigs of willow brush and other shrubs for food all winter, the woody products they are eating do not have enough nutrition to sustain them. To get through the winter, the animals must rely on fat reserves to bolster the low-calorie diet. If the fat reserves run out before nutritious green vegetation begins to appear in the spring, the animals usually die.

Last year's calves, which are just now being chased away by mothers about to give birth to new calves, are among the animals most vulnerable to because their fat reserves are small.
South Dakota big-game animal declines: It's not the cougars, it's the lack of global warming?
Lead veterinarian Tom Huhnerkoch said it would be a "knee-jerk" reaction to conclude that lions are the main cause of reduced numbers of big-game animals. Studies show that deep snow and severe winter weather is more likely to cause such declines, he said.

"I know it's not the cougar causing the biggest problem," he said.
ISA | Panel heats up on global warming issue
Others seem sure. Thomas Peterson with the National Climate Data Center at NOAA has looked at temperature readings from 600 A.D. until now and said the trends show temperatures right now should not be as warm.

“With historic research showing we should be trending cooler, we are in fact warming,” Peterson said. He did say global warming is not uniform. “The Southeast in the U.S. and in Greenland has cooled a bit. But there has been warming in the Arctic and in the U.S. overall.” He pointed out some changes resulting from the warming cycle with plants blooming earlier, animals moving closer to the poles, Arctic warming with the ice thinning, and Antarctic cooling with ice getting thicker.

Every single model shows we are warming, and that goes against what we should be doing right now,” he said.

One example showed a model of a summer in Minnesota by the year 2095 will have the same type of climate as Oklahoma. Southern Illinois, he said, will have the same summer climate as Houston. “I don’t even want to know where Houston will be,” he said.

It's been a tough winter back home this year, but I can't remember seeing the results as illustrated with these photos. You would occasionally come across dead deer walking for pheasants and would always see pheasants frozen solid from an overnight low reaching the 75 below windchills.

These photos were taken from a landowner removing the deer from the fields after several continuous days of COLD! Nature at work!
Rep. Herseth Sandlin Supports Global Warming [Hoax] Tax
PIERRE - In the coming weeks, Congress will address climate change legislation designed to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the next ten years to 20 percent below 2005 levels. The legislation would set a limit, or cap, on carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel sources - oil, coal, and natural gas. Under the guise of protecting the environment, the proposed plan, dubbed “cap and trade,” is really a new tax designed to make energy produced from coal and gas more expensive. Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, a member of the House Committee on Global Warming, supports this legislation. Estimates from a South Dakota Public Utilities Commission study have shown that under cap and trade, residential electric bills in South Dakota would increase more than 48 percent. All South Dakotans would pay this tax increase.

Charlie Clark of Keldron, SD recently returned from lobbying in Washington, DC on behalf of the Moreau Grand Electric Cooperative and the South Dakota Rural Electric Association. “Moreau Grand has a higher percentage of lower income customers,” he said. “We have several hundred delinquencies, some more than 90 days late. If our customers are already having difficulty paying their electric bills, a 48% increase will be sure to skyrocket our delinquency rate.”
NORQUIST: Will pollute your prosperity - Washington Times
Why in the world would anyone want the Democrats in the White House and Congress to attach more boat anchors to the American economy?

The old argument was that global warming forced the government to act before we all died of heat stroke. This argument has waned as temperature data sets show 1998 was the high point of warm years and temperatures have remained relatively stable or fallen since.

Phony environmentalists who want government control over American energy use, the size of our cars and who can build what where told us in the 1970s that "global cooling" caused by energy use forced us to give the government more power. Then "global warming" caused by the same things that caused global cooling 10 years earlier required us to bend to the will of Washington bureaucrats. At some point, this is like a bad game of Jeopardy: Same answer regardless of the question.

Can we afford NOT to throw away trillions of dollars on the greatest scientific fraud in history?
The Senate Finance Committee is holding hearings on cap and trade today. And Baucus starts it off with a nice point. "Action would not be without cost," he admits. "But the costs of inaction would be far greater."

That's really the key insight. No one advocates a cap and trade program or a carbon tax because it seems like fun. No politician pushes these proposals because they're a surefire ticket to reelection. It's simply that if we don't do something, the consequences could prove disastrous.
Prometheus » Blog Archive » One of These Perspectives is Reality Based
At some point these well-meaning scientists and their international colleagues will realize that shutting down coal plants is just not in the cards in the “near future.” The realities of global energy supply and geopolitics necessarily implies that capture and sequestration will have to be developed and deployed, if carbon dioxide emissions from coal are to be addressed.

Scientists acting as advocates is fine, as they are citizens as well. But is it too much to ask that their advocacy be well-informed and practical, rather than naive and impossible? Advocating faster progress on capture and storage technologies would be a good place to start.

Michigan's governor promotes the green jobs scam, which is precariously balanced atop the climate scam
Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, whose state has been battered by layoffs in auto industry and related sectors, said jobs in the wind energy industry could replace manufacturing jobs there.

She said the industrial Midwest could move from being the Rust Belt to the Green Belt. Suppliers to the auto industry could easily be manufacturing wind energy components, she said.

"I continue to tell Michigan citizens that whenever you hear the words 'climate change' or 'global warming,' think jobs," Granholm said.
China can't continue to expect to be bribed on climate change :: Ben Caldecott
During Ed Miliband's visit to China this week he set out a rosy view of China's engagement on climate change. Despite these reports to the contrary, there hasn't been a fundamental change in China's negotiating position. Chinese negotiators have almost always been willing to entertain the concern western diplomats have for climate change, as long as the financial and technological rewards to China look sufficiently attractive.

Instead of the Chinese being possessed with an urgency to act on climate change - after all they will suffer disproportionately from it - they will only act with large incentives paid for by western governments. The view of Chinese negotiators is coloured by the idea that climate change is some sort of western conspiracy, designed to give European and American companies a competitive advantage that will keep China in relative poverty for another century. This view is surprisingly prevalent, even amongst officials in Beijing and in the most developed provinces, and leads to an obsession with self sufficiency and the need to obtain western technologies.
EurActiv.com - Global climate [hoax] deal [allegedly] needed to halt soaring coal production | EU - European Information on Climate Change
More of the world's electricity was generated from coal last year, reveals a new industry report, pointing at the futility of unilateral EU moves to cut down CO2 emissions.

The 2008 market report of EURACOAL, the industry association representing the European coal industry, shows that global hard coal production increased by at least 200 million tonnes (Mt) last year, most of which was mined in China. Higher energy prices and technological advances make it even more profitable to use already abundant coal resources, the report published this week said.

But Mr. Dimas warned the United States that small annual reductions now would require much larger annual reductions — as much as 5 percent a year — after 2020, if Mr. Obama’s long term goal of reducing planet warming gases 80 percent by mid-century is to be reached.

“How they can achieve this is difficult,” Mr. Dimas said, who was speaking at an event in Brussels hosted by the European Policy Center, a policy research organization.

Hans Martens, the chief executive of the E.P.C., reinforced the point, noting that “politicians do have this extraordinary ability to set ambitious targets for their successors.”

With the planet allegedly on the brink of fiery apocalypse, alarmist is "worried" about lower temperatures

Theories on calmer sun flare up - Kansas City Star
If the effect is to cool the Earth, as in the so-called Maunder Minimum, the Little Ice Age that ran from 1645 to 1715, some scientists worry that it would mask the effects of global warming caused by a buildup of greenhouse gases.

“The problem is if the sun is, indeed, going into a minimum, which we don’t know yet, people will think that we don’t have to act on climate change,” said Angela Speck, an astrophysicist at the University of Missouri. “The sun came back out of that minimum in the 18th century” — when the River Thames turned to ice — “and it will come back out of this.”

“I’m inclined to think the effects are real,” said Adrian Melott, another KU astrophysicist. “But the evidence is nowhere as solid as it is for the carbon dioxide buildup in the atmosphere” and climate change.

“My worry,” he said, “is that it will lower temperatures and cause people to think it’s OK to burn all that coal and oil.”

Wind Watch: Why are wind turbines on the best land?
There has been a great deal of correspondence about the proposed wind turbine development in Sempringham Fen but no one seems to have given much thought about the long term effect on agriculture and the fact that the fen sites are being chosen solely because it is an underpopulated area with therefore little opposition.

The fens are the richest source of food producing land in the country. The Romans thought so and dug the Carre Dyke by hand to make best use of every acre.

With the Doomsday scenario of global warming, lack of water for irrigation and areas becoming too hot to grow crops, what are we doing? Covering the fens with wind turbines which are supported on huge lumps of concrete and which even the developers say will not be removable. And all to produce electricity for just one day out of three!

Indeed Watts said ealier this year that Hansen is “no longer a scientist” and called on NASA to fire Hansen. The Bias Against Oil and Gas | Print Article | Newsweek.com
It's insane not to encourage U.S. production. The same is true on economic grounds because the promise of green jobs is wildly exaggerated. Look at the numbers. In 2008 the oil and gas industries employed 1.8 million people. Jobs in the solar and wind industries are reckoned (by their trade associations) to be 35,000 and 85,000, respectively. Now do the arithmetic: a 5 percent rise in oil jobs (90,000) almost equals a doubling for wind and solar (120,000). Modest movements, up or down, in oil and natural gas will swamp plausible changes in green jobs. They won't save the economy.

Improved exploration and production techniques—drilling in deeper waters, horizontal drilling, hydraulic "fracturing" (pumping liquids into fields to open up seams)—have increased America's recoverable amounts of oil and natural gas. The resistance to availing ourselves of these resources is mostly political and psychological. Among many environmentalists, the idea of expanding fossil-fuel production is a cardinal sin. It offends their religion. The Obama administration too often caters to this reflexive hostility. The resulting policies aim more to satisfy popular prejudice—through reassuring photo ops and sound bites—than meet the country's needs.

Prince Charles on MySpace: how greens are helping to kill the rainforests :: James Delingpole
This is what's wrong with the modern green movement: like one of its early founding fathers Adolf Hitler, it will insist on fighting its wars on too many fronts. Some of its battles really are worth fighting: over-fishing is one; the destruction of the rainforests is definitely another. Unfortunately, the main effort of its campaigning has been wasted on a chimera: the thing they used to call "global warming" and now call "climate change." As Bjorn Lomborg and others have pointed out, this has resulted in billions and billions of dollars being squandered trying to prevent a natural process, when the same amount of money could have been used to do real good: providing vitamins to deficient children; providing drinkable water to every person on the planet; etc.

It's also exactly where Prince Charles goes wrong in his video. He uses rainforests as an excuse to bleat about "the urgent fight against climate change" and "the battle against catastrophic climate change", conflating two very different problems: one real and quite urgent, the other largely illusory. If he stuck to the rainforests and ignored the anthropogenic global warming drivel, his message would have so much more impact and credibility.

Even Berkeley residents balk at cost of global warming swindle
After two years of public outreach and debate on an ambitious and controversial plan to curb global warming, Berkeley's city council this week was forced to water down the proposal — which initially required an energy audit of every home — after angry homeowners complained the plan could cost them tens of thousands of dollars.

Experts say Berkeley's retreat may serve as a cautionary lesson to other cities and counties contemplating plans to fight global warming: Even residents of the nation's most liberal jurisdictions may balk when it comes to paying the price of going green.

"I think we can expect to see episodes like the controversy over mandates in the plan more and more, because environmental and political leaders haven't been responsible about the costs of climate stabilization," said Michael O'Hare, professor of public policy at the University of California-Berkeley. ''If you don't level with the public about the first part, it's not surprising when people balk at climate policy that requires them to do some heavy lifting."
...
But is the approved plan toothless?

Neal De Snoo, Berkeley's energy program officer, who helped draft the 145-page plan, said no.

Even though it will now be voluntary, the plan still "provides a solid direction for where we need to go," and will ''give the city and homeowners tools they need to make these large (energy) reductions."
The Heartland Institute: Is the U.S. Surface Temperature Record Reliable?
This report, by meteorologist Anthony Watts, presents the results of the first-ever compre-hensive review of the quality of data coming from the National Weather Service’s network of stations. Watts and a team of volunteers visually inspected and took pictures of more than 850 of these temperature stations. What they found will shock you:

“We found stations located next to the exhaust fans of air conditioning units, surrounded by asphalt parking lots and roads, on blistering-hot rooftops, and near sidewalks and buildings that absorb and radiate heat. We found 68 stations located at wastewater treatment plants, where the process of waste digestion causes temperatures to be higher than in surrounding areas.

In fact, we found that 89 percent of the stations--nearly 9 of every 10--fail to meet the National Weather Service’s own siting requirements ...”

The conclusion is inescapable: The U.S. temperature record is unreliable. And since the U.S. record is thought to be “the best in the world,” it follows that the global database is likely similarly compromised and unreliable.

...Despite this, the White House and the U.S. Congress—at least its Democrats—have been telling everyone that, because of global warming, the United States government must impose draconian regulations and restrictions on “greenhouse gas” emissions, by which they primarily mean carbon dioxide (CO2). The claim, utterly false, is that CO2 is “forcing” a warming that will kill us all if we don’t reduce energy and other emissions.

The utterly vile politicians advancing this—I will not name them because the very act causes nausea—had better begin to pay some attention to public opinion on the subject because the Gallup, Zogby and Rasmussen polling organizations all are reporting that large majorities of people no longer believe their lies.

Why America Does Not Care About Global Warming « Roy Spencer, Ph. D.
So, for those of you in the environmental community who think the global warming message needs to be repackaged, or rephrased, or have a change in terminology …well…I think you are wasting your time. The people have gotten the message, loud and clear: Global warming is manmade, and it is only going to get worse.

The trouble is that the people simply don’t think you know what you are talking about. And if global warming is largely a natural process, cutting down on our greenhouse gas emissions is going to have no measurable effect on future global temperatures.

Now, if you think you might succeed through a different kind of deception of the public…well, that indeed might work.

Of course when I say "Dangerous climate change theory", I put the pause in after dangerous, where as Jim Hansen would pause after change.
Alarmist journalist Tom Yulsman: "Scientists ice global cooling dead enders" | CEJournal
The science didn’t surprise me here. It’s just plain old common sense that a long term climate trend will include shorter-term ups and downs in temperature. But the explicit mention of bloggers and articles in the popular press on global cooling — and right at the very top of the paper — was new on me.
Wind Watch: Suzlon says retrofit of U.S. blades on schedule
The company has taken a $35 million charge for the program to replace all 1,200 blades in its previous generation of blades, some of which developed cracking near the base. One blade broke off a turbine in Illinois.
Plug-In Hybrids: More Hype Than Hope?
Having racked up some 17,000 miles, the plug-in Prius hybrids are averaging just 51 mpg. That's raising uncomfortable questions about the value and effectiveness of plug-in technology, even as President Obama pledges to have 1 million of them on the road by 2015.

"Getting 51 miles per gallon sounds fine compared to most gas cars," railed Seattle Times columnist Danny Westneat. "But it's a black eye for a technology that trumpets it will get twice that."
Raleigh, NC: Civitas Poll: Obama Popular, Policies Not
Despite his high personal favorability ratings, voter support for Obama’s specific policy proposals garner much more negative reactions.

55 percent of voters are less likely to approve of Obama’s job performance when asked about his mortgage bailout plan. Likewise, half of voters (50 percent) have negative reaction to a proposed “Cap and Trade” tax to fight global warming.
SF Environmental Policy Examiner: Bjorn Lomborg and global warming: Part 1
"We should spend vastly more on research and development. The depressing thing is that everybody talks about green energy, but everybody think that means putting up windmills. Putting up very specific windmills. My point is if you actually want to do good, it’s not about putting up windmills that are, even now, inefficient, it’s about putting up windmills in the future that are so efficient that everybody will want one. That is actually a lot cheaper than what many people are arguing that we should be doing right now, and that kind of research and development is much cheaper and much more efficient in the long run. What the Copenhagen Consensus showed was that every dollar you invest in very quick CO2 cuts you probably do less than a dollar’s worth of good and if you take into account what kind of policy measures come up, it might be as low as 4 cents for every dollar, whereas if you invest in research and development that is bringing better technology for the future, you can end up doing as much as $16 worth of good for every dollar invested. My basic point is that I’d much rather do $16 worth of good rather than 4 cents.”
SF Environmental Policy Examiner: Bjorn Lomborg interview, Part 2: Global warming politics and assessing his critics
One gauge of how important it was is to look at the vehemence of the attacks it received. A group of scientists who had also developed into media 'darlings' found themselves confronted and often contradicted by Lomborg's book. What infuriated them most seemed to be that Lomborg was using their own statistics against them. In his native Denmark, Lomborg was accused by three environmentalists of intellectual dishonesty, a case that went to the Danish Committee on Scientific Dishonesty. The committee initially found against Lomborg, but was overturned decisively by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and a band of 308 scientists petitioned to have that committee disbanded. Lomborg's real sin apparently was to show facts and figures that contradicted the global warming alarmists' view of the world, something for which they still haven't forgiven him, if one goes by what is available on the Internet.
CHRISTOPHER HART: Why is the BBC so in love with Bono when he's a dreadful old hypocrite? | Mail Online
What sticks in my craw is the philanthropic posturing that goes with it all. It's rather odd to make grandiose pronouncements about how climate change will hit the world's poor hardest, while flying on a private jet between your many homes.
Emission plan disaster for New Zealand - opinion | Stuff.co.nz
Far from cutting farm emissions, we should raise them if it feeds more people, says Frank Brenmuhl.

The road to hell is proverbially paved with good intention. If anything proves this right, it is the emissions trading scheme, or ETS.

Rushed into law before the last election, the scheme is like some evil twin of the unlamented Electoral Finance Act.

While the latter brought civil libertarians on to the streets, who could oppose the ETS? It's like condemning the polar bear to extinction or being party to the genocide of island civilisations. The ETS will save the planet, or so we were told.

The Climate Change Response (Emissions Trading) Amendment Act was not the finest achievement of the 48th Parliament.

The ETS is uncosted tokenism that, though born of laudable intent, became a political fix. Tokenism isn't a great start for a major piece of public policy.
Most emission permits to be free: U.S. Rep. Doyle | Environment | Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Most of the pollution emission permits that industry would need under a climate change bill being negotiated in the U.S. House of Representatives will initially be given to companies, instead of sold to them, Representative Mike Doyle said on Wednesday.

The Pennsylvania Democrat, who has been working on portions of the bill aimed at reducing U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases, also told reporters that for the first 10 years to 15 years of the program, most of industry's permits would be free.
