It has a gigantic supercomputer, 1,500 staff and a £170m-a-year budget. So why does the Met Office get it so wrong? | Richard North - Mail Online
From a fuddy-duddy organisation created in 1854 to provide a service to mariners, and then aviators when the aeroplane was invented, the Met Office became an arm of the Ministry of Defence. But it has since transmuted into a powerful advocacy unit that sees its main mission to convince the world that we are prey to ' dangerous climate change'.

Inside baseball: A few technical notes

Since a few readers have asked me "how I do this", here are some notes on the software etc that I use:

1. I do most of my work on a dual-processor Macbook Pro; my home internet connection is 12 Megabit DSL.

2.  I use Google Reader with 140+ subscriptions.  If you're curious, I've exported my subscriptions to an XML file on Dropbox here.

3. My browser is Firefox; I regularly run a number of searches of news, blogs, Twitter, YouTube, etc  (example: "cap and trade" OR "carbon tax")--maybe 14 different searches in 14 different tabs.  I also regularly check sites like Climate Depot, Celebrity Paycut, the Guardian's climate change page, etc.

4. I get a number of tips via email (if you'd like to be credited for a tip, just let me know).

5.  When I get up in the morning, I often run through all of these sources and find maybe 60 links that interest me.  I mark these with a Firefox add-on called Read It Later.

6.  I can then run through the 60 interesting links using a Firefox add-on called ScribeFire, which allows me to highlight some text, then quickly post it.  I usually add several items to a given post because Blogger limits me to 50 posts per 24 hours.

7.  Within the last year, I've picked up an iPhone, which allows me to browse my RSS subscriptions from almost anywhere, then add new links to my Read It Later list.   An iPhone app called "Reeder" is handy for this.  I've set up my Blogger account so that I can put up new posts via email.

8.  My total compensation for doing all of this is zero dollars per year.   I think the global warming hoax is a destructive, evil thing, and I'd like to contribute to its decline.

9.  If you find an interesting global warming story, please consider pointing it out by starting your own blog, submitting it as a comment, or emailing me.   Who knows--the story may percolate up to a site like Drudge, which reports over 7.8 billion (with a "B") visits in the past year.
Cold weather brings freeze warnings and potential for brush fires - St. Petersburg Times

1978 minus 20 is 1958. These guys are acting like Keeling, whose curve starts in 1958, was the very first person on earth to measure atmospheric CO2 content. Clearly this is wrong. And just as clearly, their derived CO2 profile differs markedly from that of the historical atmospheric measurements turned up by Beck. Look at how the ice core measurements above have no correlation with the historical atmospheric measurements. This strongly implies that something is happening down in the ice cores to change the CO2 content. So, let's look at this issue.

The Met Office gives us the warmist weather - Christopher Booker - Telegraph
Scientific method has gone out of the window, to support a theory that looks more questionable than ever. The whole set-up – Met Office, Hadley Centre, the CRU, the IPCC – looks hopelessly compromised. It is a state of affairs so bizarre that it cries out for political intervention. Yet our politicians, from Gordon Brown and David Cameron down, are so in thrall to this new religion that they cannot see evidence staring them in the face – that the show has gone off the rails. How many more winters and summers will it take before sanity finally breaks in to put an end to this scandal?
EU Referendum: Pachauri: How much is this man getting?
What we are seeing here though is an interesting modus vivendi - three different payments to support the chairman of the IPCC, yet each payment is made by a different organisation to a different organisation – one in the US, one in the UK and one in India. No one knows what the other is doing - except Pachauri, of course.
...
With so many paymasters though, and such a multiplicity of payment routes, Pachauri's financial affairs should be raising these sort of alarm signals. This man, however, seems to be above the law.

I just crossed a threshold in my journey to sustainability. About 2 weeks ago, I took a leap of faith — or was it madness? I sometimes wonder — and gave up everything “luxury” I’ve ever owned, from my grand piano and all my recording gear, to my big furniture – couches, beds, desks, tables, lamps, kitchen appliances, everything – and left my home of 12 years, a massive 3 bedroom apartment on the beach featuring expansive spaces, enormous windows with lots of natural light all day, a roof deck where you can see from the ocean to the Hollywood sign and beyond, with 360-degree fireworks every July 4th, and an elevator opening from my private 3-car garage right into my unit. I gave all that up 2 weeks ago and moved into a “pod” the size of my former walk-in closet, made from reclaimed materials and located in the backyard of a communal living experiment called Yoga House with seven other people.

It's tedious to lay the Met Office's failings out on a slab for inspection, but it's necessary, since their ropey forecasts are an important part of global warming alarmism. They predict global warming on the basis of concealed temperature data, using computer models based on incomplete scientific theories of the climate which prove poor at predicting the future. On that basis, these social modellers who can't even do weather forecasts tell everyone in the world to become poorer. So they deserve to be attacked and ridiculed.

...This is part of an international effort which has the taxpayer funding German teenagers (pictured top left) to wave "climate justice" banners outside the Bella Centre in Copenhagen, with more teenage activists inside (above) - the British Council all while keeping up its flow of propaganda on its blog, offering us such delights as: "Dr Pachauri has been phenomenal in his role at IPCC and the fourth assessment report of IPCC is the basis for all scientific information on climate change."

Is this really what we pay our taxes for?

Now, with £10 million more of hard-pressed British taxpayers' money about to flow into the coffers of an organisation owned by a multi-millionaire businessman by the name of Dr R K Pachauri, it would be highly germane to question whether David Cameron has all his marbles in place, wanting to protect this funding stream.

Global warming in the excluded middle.
If man ended his contribution of CO2, or all contributions of greenhouse gases, completely, the causes of climate change are still multifarious and not completely known or understood; and, if the absence of man’s contribution slowed global warming, it is unlikely to stop it. Man is not smart enough to stop global warming, and the unintended consequences can’t be known if man could stop global warming. It seems shortsighted to argue over whether or not man caused global warming and how man can stop it. The issue might be how to live with the changes global warming will bring about. It seems an unequivocal fact that man can’t stabilize the climate. The thought that we could would be tragic hubris. There may be more Earthly physical changes for which humans should be preparing.

Tom Harris: Climate conference organizers asked for trouble in Copenhagen
...Held at Copenhagen’s cavernous Forum, with four 20 foot screens suspended from the ceiling and fed live from the Bella Center, it promised to be a massive event with thousands of concerned activists anxiously awaiting the latest updates from world leaders engaged in saving the planet.

However, by then it was too late and NGOs had either arranged their own side events, renting other facilities in the city, hit the streets to help fuel the protest marches or left the city in disgust for parts unknown. The massive hall stood essentially empty by Thursday evening with only 30 die hard campaigners watching the first word leaders‘ speeches. Friday afternoon, when negotiations inside the Bella Center were most intense, only about 100 of the thousands of NGO reps even bothered to show up at the event arranged by the Danish Foreign Ministry.

Copenhagen has the markings of being the last really big hurrah for massive UN-backed climate change conferences. Let’s hope so. Having totally failed politically and logistically, and thoroughly alienating everyone involved in this exorbitantly expensive process, Copenhagen should stand as a symbol of all that has gone wrong with the climate change movement. Originally well intentioned, though often misguided, climatism, as it is now being labeled, has largely morphed into an ungainly politically motivated machine that is more about money that it is about saving the environment. With its blind adherence to dogmatic beliefs that simply do not match observational evidence, it is time real environmentalists abandoned this horse and got back to the basics – land, air and water pollution, issues we know we can handle properly with sufficient public interest and good will.

Power Line - It Didn't Start With Climategate
The whistleblower at the University of East Anglia who leaked emails and other documents that reveal the fraud that is being perpetrated by the world's leading global warming alarmists did us all a great service. But it is important to realize that the deception didn't just begin: rather, the global warming hysteria movement has been shot through with fraud from the start.
...
So the Kyoto protocol was based on fictitious science, exaggerated or fabricated outright for political purposes. The same Professor Santer who hijacked the Second Assessment Report figures prominently in Climategate. Many of his emails were disclosed by the East Anglia whistleblower; among other things, they show Santer resisting all efforts by independent scientists to obtain information, through Freedom of Information Act requests, about the statistical manipulations that Santer applies to raw climate data to "prove" the existence of anthropogenic global warming.

Fraud: it is the one constant in the history of the global warming hysteria movement.

7. Major Australian droughts traced to different causes

Southeastern Australia has been subject to several severe, long-term droughts during the past century, including the "Federation" drought (1895-1900), the "World War II" drought (1937-1945), and the "Big Dry" (1997 to present). All three droughts were widespread and devastating, but until now the causes and nature of these three droughts had not been compared.
Dr. Tim Ball: Control of Climate Policies by Unaccountable Bureaucracies; The Canadian Example
CanadaFreePress published some of this article a few years ago but few saw it because it was quickly pulled after I received a legal threat I was financially unable to fight. Legal threats to silence people are a common practice of supporters of human caused global warming. I related my experience to Dr Fred Singer and he immediately named the lawyer. How did he know? He and others had received threats from the same lawyer.

The threats are part of personal attacks and other tactics perpetrated by nasty web sites like Desmogblog, organized by James Hoggan, Chairman of the Board of the David Suzuki Foundation. William Connolley perpetuated many of the smears through his control of climate entries on Wikipedia. We now know those who were attacked were viewed as real threats by the CRU gang and their supporters at Realclimate.

Now the web of lies and deception associated with climate science are exposed it is time to revisit what triggered the legal attack on the CFP article.

The Carbon Sense Coalition » South Pacific Sea Level Changes
[Vincent R Gray] “The individual sea level records obtained from the SEAFRAME study on 12 Pacific Islands have all been assessed by the anonymous authors of the official reports as indicating positive trends in sea level over all 12 Pacific Islands involved since the study began in 1993. This assessment studies individual records and finds that all of them show no change of sea level in almost all of the records following the 1998 cyclones. It is considered that cyclones and tsunamis not only induce false readings which should be ignored when calculating a trend, but they also disrupt the leveling of the equipment so that previous years’ figures should also not form part of a trend.”

The Y2K problem fits into a long sequence of stories spread by the people who are simply fascinated with the global cataclysm: Nostradamus, asteroids, aliens, weapons of mass destruction, bird flu, swine flu, you name it. Today, the loudest one is global warming. The hysteria in the media exceeds that of the Y2K problem by one or two orders of magnitude. So one shouldn't be shocked that instead of 300 billion dollars, people are expected to spend proportionally more money, namely trillions or tens of trillions of dollars.

I agree to some extent but, in this particular case, I don't think that any concerted effort by scientific communicators could have overcome the bleating by Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck that took one or two statements out of context from among 1,073 e-mails and a million words, claiming proof of a massive global scientific conspiracy to manufacture climate change warnings.

Cold weather continues to cause major disruption - The Irish Times - Sat, Jan 02, 2010

Maintenance crews cleaning the runway and apron had successfully dealt with the first three showers but the fourth proved “very challenging” and it was not safe to open the airport until 10.30am.

“This level of snowfall wasn’t expected. The snow was falling quicker than we could clear it,” she said, adding that the airport was geared up “appropriately” for the amount of snow that could be expected in any given year. “There’s no point in investing millions in equipment that airlines wouldn’t pay for and we would hardly ever use.”

Climate change [hoax] is inspiring the ultimate scary movies | Ryan Gilbey | Comment is free | The Guardian
This is why global warming is, to use a non-secular term, such a godsend for movie narratives. With the divine retribution angle now an anachronism, and international terrorism making Airport-style plots too near the knuckle, climate change as a plot device provides the right blend of terrible plausibility, comforting distance and chastening subtext. We know global warming is under way – well, most do – and yet the phenomenon is gradual enough to rule out any risk of reality stealing a march on fiction.

THE Climategate scandal continues to unfold. The thousands of emails leaked to the internet from the Climate Research Unit of the University of East Anglia reveal a tight-knit, influential group of scientists whose attitude to their profession is, to say the least, distorted.

Climategate may at least demonstrate that the concept of a scientific consensus with regard to global warming is nonsense.

Flashback: Climate Change Guru James Hansen [suggests that eating meat causes bad weather]
"There are many things that people can do to reduce their carbon emissions, but changing your light bulb and many of the things are much less effective than changing your diet, because if you eat further down on the food chain rather than animals, which have produced many greenhouse gases, and used much energy in the process of growing that meat, you can actually make a bigger contribution in that way than just about anything. So, that, in terms of individual action, is perhaps the best thing you can do."

Australia’s Rudd Stands by Call for Action on Climate Change [Hoax] - BusinessWeek
Jan. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Action on climate change is in Australia’s national interest and must be pursued for the benefit of future generations, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said.

The government has vowed to stick by plans to reintroduce legislation in February to create a national carbon emissions trading system after the nation’s Senate rejected the bill for a second time in December, creating an early election trigger.

… and treble by 2024. All thanks to the ETS. Fortunate, then, that it will never make it into law
ABC The Drum Unleashed - My dreams for 2010
[Catherine Deveny, comedian, columnist, author] Like all people apart from politicians my hopes for 2010 are world peace and freedom from hunger, poverty, discrimination and oppression. Oh and the reintroduction of stoning for Channel Nine executives, religious fundamentalists, people who ask you to bring your own meat to their barbeques, parents with ‘gifted children’ and ‘climate change skeptics’.

(Climate Change Skeptics (also known as morons) are people who don’t believe in science purely because they a) can’t bear to admit they couldn’t see it coming or may have contributed to it b) don’t care because they assume by the time the real catastrophe happens they’ll be old, dead or rich enough to buy their way out and or c) refuse to accept the evidence because if they do they will have to admit that it God doesn’t exist. Because if God existed wouldn’t we be special enough for him to spare us?)

Mohib Ebrahim’s Climategate poster at NREL « Climate Sanity
I downloaded the large version of Mohib Ebrahim’s very nicely made climategate timeline from Jo Nova’s blog. The local FedEx Kinko’s copy store printed out the 8 foot by 3 foot work of art in black and white for a mere $17. This poster is now hanging on the wall of my office cubicle at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. It will be interesting to see how this goes over with my colleagues. Here is a picture of the poster….
Idiotic Comment of the Day: Clover Moore | Australian Climate Madness
Sydney's batty "Lord" mayor spoils the New Year celebrations by hijacking them to preach about climate change. It's just so last year
