Energy Tribune- The Climate War Should be Declared Over
There is hope. Mr. Flannery has basically admitted there is no need for the climate war to continue. By revealing that the temperature drop would not be realized for perhaps a thousand years there simply is no pressing need to transform the way we make energy today, tomorrow or twenty years from now. The collateral damage resulting from such a forced and rapid transformation would likely far, far exceed any guessed at benefit of unknown magnitude hundreds of years in the future. To risk the prosperity and safety of billions of people on such tenuous assumptions is reckless and irresponsible to the extreme. The climate war should be declared over.

Hmm: Are we completely sure that iPhone chargers in Boise are causing ocean currents to deliver subtropical waters to a fjord in Greenland?

Sail-World.com : Study sheds light on how heat is transported to Greenland glaciers
Warmer air is only part of the story when it comes to Greenland’s rapidly melting ice sheet. New research by scientists at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) highlights the role ocean circulation plays in transporting heat to glaciers.
...
A research team led by WHOI physical oceanographer Fiamma Straneo discovered warm, subtropical waters deep inside Sermilik Fjord at the base of Helheim Glacier in 2009.
...
The March 2010 trip marked the first time the researchers were able to observe winter-time conditions in the fjord, which is how the system probably works nine months out of the year.

'One surprise we found was that the warm waters in the fjord are actually 1 degree Celsius warmer in winter, which by Greenland standards is a lot,' Straneo says. 'It raises the possibility that winter melt rates might be larger than those in the summer.

'Current climate models do not take these factors into account,' she adds. 'We’re just beginning to understand all of the pieces. We need to know more about how the ocean changes at the glaciers edge. It’s critical to improving predictions of future ice sheet variability and sea level rise.'

Media interest falls to record low | ScottishSceptic
In 2007 the average number of google hits for a news search for “global warming” was around 20,000 stories. It then steadily declined until just before climategate it was around the 10,000+ news articles.
...
I’d jumped the gun a few days ago; But there it was 6600 hits! Not 7600, not 8600, not even the 15,000 during climategate, but 6600.
Now, I could be criticised in all manner of ways for my methodology. Shouldn’t I also count “climate change” or “climate weirding” or whatever is the latest fad name for this doomsday cult? Unfortunately “climate change” now seems to pick more stories on the economic climate, than global warming. So no, I stuck to “global warming” and for all these past years I have kept a personal tab on the number of global warming stories and 6600 really now is the dross at the bottom of the barrel: eco-lunatics whose idea of a perfect world is one without anyone else in it; tired out-of-date journalists who still think it is fashionable to go on about “global warming”; young wet-behind-the-ears journalists who heard about climate “science” at school and still believe their teachers, and yes … the boring old sods who go on about global warming being an utter load of twaddle!

How Climate Change May Make Killer Diseases Worse: KGO Newstalk 810 San Francisco
(NEW YORK) -- Malaria already kills a million people a year and now, researchers fear, climate change could make the problem even worse.
Mosquitos, malaria and the IPCC "consensus" « Climate Audit
Despite this remarkably cold period, perhaps the coldest since the last major Ice Age, malaria was what we would today call a "serious public health problem" in many parts of the British Isles, and was endemic, sometimes common throughout Europe as far north as the Baltic and northern Russia. It began to disappear from many regions of Europe, Canada and the United States as a result of multiple changes in agriculture and lifestyle that affected the breeding of the mosquito and its contact with people, but it persisted in less developed regions until the mid 20th century. In fact, the most catastrophic epidemic on record anywhere in the world occurred in the Soviet Union in the 1920s, with a peak incidence of 13 million cases per year, and 600,000 deaths. Transmission was high in many parts of Siberia, and there were 30,000 cases and 10,000 deaths due to falciparum infection (the most deadly malaria parasite) in Archangel, close to the Arctic circle. Malaria persisted in many parts of Europe until the advent of DDT. One of the last malarious countries in Europe was Holland: the WHO finally declared it malaria-free in 1970.

I hope I have convinced you that malaria is not an exclusively tropical disease, and is not limited by cold winters!

The Reference Frame: BEST: surface warming since 1880 seems robust to me
Yesterday in the Congress, I liked an intervention of Scott Armstrong. A politician said that all the witnesses agreed that "global warming is happening". It "was" happening in some periods in the past but what "will be" happening in the future is a different matter and an uncertain one.

Warmist junk scientists visit the overheated Arctic; spent a lot of time complaining about the extreme cold; admit that the science isn't settled

Extreme science in the Arctic Circle - CNN.com
Wiping sleep from my eyes, I wrestled with my gear as I slipped out of my sleeping bag into the -35 degree centigrade air.

Getting up in the morning can be a struggle in the best of times but in these conditions it is downright brutal.
...
As one scientist explained, global climate models have always assumed that the Arctic does not transfer carbon through the sea ice but no one has ever tried to find out if that is true or not. The answer to this question could have huge consequences for our understanding of climate modeling. In 2011 we still know next to nothing about the most important ocean on the planet -- a shocking and irresponsible oversight.
...
At these temperatures, a human being would survive about 5 minutes in the water; so it seemed rather counterintuitive that we spent the better part of 8 hours today drilling and chipping through the ice to reach the frigid water below.
...
Before people started burning coal and oil, ocean pH (which represents acidity levels) had been relatively stable for the previous 20 million years. But researchers predict that if carbon emissions continue at their current rate, ocean acidity will more than double by 2100.
...
There are a lot of variables when trying to film in these conditions. From the hardships the cameraman must endure trying to handle a large, heavy, and complex piece of equipment in such frigid temperatures to the difficulty of organizing the team and delivering simple dialogue to camera, the challenges of making a documentary are multiplied one hundred fold.

Imagine standing with a bare face (so the audience can see who you are) in the wind as your nose and cheeks begin to literally freeze, wearing no goggles so that your eyes start to seal shut each time you blink and an almost unbearable ice cream headache caused by the cold wind whistling around your head all whilst having a casual conversation and speaking calmly and clearly to the camera.
...
In the cold, everything takes longer and everything is more fragile, metal can shatter and cloth is brittle. What might be considered an inconvenience in warmer climes, puncturing a hole in the tent or breaking the metal rods that keep it aloft, can be potentially disastrous in the Arctic.
...
8: If this is your first time on Ice Base do not confuse your urine bottle for your water bottle

Self-evident, yes. Does it happen? Apparently, yes. At -40 degrees, getting in and out of the tent and the sleeping bags at night is not easy. Everyone keeps a urine bottle in order to go to the bathroom in the tent at night. The challenge is that one has to keep both one's urine bottle and one's water bottle in the sleeping bag with you or they will freeze, so in the dead of night it is easier to mistake the two than you might think.
Under Pressure—Q & A With EPA Head Lisa Jackson - Ecocentric - TIME.com
[Warmist Jackson] The Clean Air Act and Supreme Court cases have said that EPA must determine whether or not greenhouse gases endanger public health. We have determined, based on multiple lines of scientific evidence, that they do.
...
The biggest criticism that I've leveled – and I've done it in my hearing testimony – is that what the current efforts do is overrule scientists on a scientific finding. Congress is essentially passing a law that says, We, a bunch of lawmakers, have decided what the science is on this issue. And that to me is what this Congress could be remembered for, more than anything else. History will forget a lot of the day-to-day, inside the beltway discussions about riders and budget and trying to get rid of or defund the EPA, but I don't think that history will forget the first time that politicians made a law to overrule scientists.

Brendan Smith: Should We Remain Silent About Climate Change?
For the last several years many of the biggest players in the climate movement have argued that to save the planet we need to purge the words "global warming" and "climate change" from our talking points and educational materials. Poll-oriented groups like the Breakthrough Institute and the Environmental Defense Fund argue that public opinion surveys prove Americans care most about jobs and lack the capacity to act on some distant threat.
...
Eerily, the "good news" strategy is heavily influenced by the Republican pollster and messaging maven Frank Luntz -- infamous for coining phrases like "death tax." In 2009 the Environmental Defense Fund teamed up with Luntz 's firm The Word Doctors to figure out how to help marshal public support for a climate bill. Luntz's advice? "The least important component of climate change is climate change... You're fighting the wrong battle. What they want is an end to dependence on foreign oil."
...
So what was the effect of climate activists' decision to stop talking about climate change? The enemies of the planet won. Climate legislation is dead.
...
* The right wing, backed by the fossil fuel industry, have spent millions of dollars promoting this story: The climate crisis is an imaginary threat invented by liberals to justify government power over individuals and companies, destroying both liberty and jobs in the process. To remain silent about the reality of the climate change threat is to maximize the credibility and effectiveness of this argument. Conversely, spelling out the facts of climate change is the way to expose the climate denialist argument for the hoax it is.

So the IPCC had maximum credibility, and is really worried about global warming. Singh found no one of maximum credibility who was not worried about global warming. While he didn't win the presidency in 2000, former Vice President Al Gore is still in the public eye for his Oscar-winning documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth." Electric car key to carbon cuts | WWF news | WWF UK

Who are the biggest electric car liars - the BBC, or Tesla Motors? • The Register
The Beeb coverage which has Robert Llewellyn (the actor who played Kryten, also well-known for revealing his intimate personal details on Twitter) and Tesla so wound up is this effort last week from BBC business journo Brian Milligan. Milligan decided to drive from London to Edinburgh in a battery-powered car, to see how long it took and how easy it was to do.

The car obtained by Milligan was a "Mini E", a Mini with its normal propulsion (engine, gearbox etc) replaced by a comparatively cheap, low-performance electric drive train. You can't buy a Mini-E; forty of them were made by BMW and leased to users (for £330 per month including insurance and maintenance) in a beta-test project of the sort common in the alternative-vehicle-tech world.

To cut a long story short, Milligan finally nursed his 'leccycar into Edinburgh on Friday four days after setting out, having achieved average speed (over the time spent driving and charging) of six mph. The journey had been far from simple, as public charging points remain thin on the ground in old Blighty - and are sometimes so far apart that the Mini-E struggled to reach the next one. The trip was also uncomfortable at times: Milligan was compelled to turn off his heater in sub-zero temperatures in order to eke the last few miles out of his battery.

Climate Change - Studying Climate Change - Tree Rings
Dendrochronology is currently still in its scientific infancy – there are many problems in the use of tree rings, particularly because the growth of tree rings can be impacted by many issues - not just rainfall amount, temperature, and cloud cover – but also by wind, soil properties, disease, or even pollution. These issues can certainly impact tree ring growth and cloud the scientific record. Fortunately, scientists are gaining new insight in the reading and use of tree rings, and hope that they can be used to help understand whether global warming has any precedent in the ring record of the past 1,000 years.

RealClearPolitics - Obama's Speech on America's Energy Security
You remember that -- "drill, baby, drill"-- and we were going through all that. (Laughter.) And none of it was really going to do anything to solve the problem.
...
Now, meeting the goal of cutting our oil dependence depends largely on two things: first, finding and producing more oil at home; second, reducing our overall dependence on oil with cleaner alternative fuels and greater efficiency.

This begins by continuing to increase America's oil supply. ...in my State of the Union address back in January, I called for a new Clean Energy Standard for America: By 2035, 80 percent of our electricity needs to come from a wide range of clean energy sources -- renewables like wind and solar, efficient natural gas. And, yes, we're going to have to examine how do we make clean coal and nuclear power work.
... Every time we fill up at the pump, every time we lose a job or a business to countries that are investing more than we do in clean energy, when it comes to our air, our water, and the climate change that threatens the planet that you will inherit -- we're already paying a price.

You can trust Kevin to help save energy - Edinburgh Evening News
Running a spin-off university company called Carbon Masters, Houston is on the warpath to get them to realise just how costly wasting energy is about to get, when the Government's carbon tax kicks in next year.

His company has already estimated that Edinburgh Airport, for instance, will have a £187,000 carbon bill on top of its £2.3 million energy bill while Edinbugh University will be forking out around £900,000 on top of the £11m it pays for gas and electric. Similarly Edinburgh City Council could be facing a bill of £1m in carbon tax - its energy costs are around £12m - and the Royal Bank of Scotland, nationally, could be asked to pay £5m for its use of £66m worth of energy every year.

[July 2007]: Climate: Game Over « Climate Progress
Donald Kennedy, Editor-in-Chief of Science has a good op-ed:
With respect to climate change, we have abruptly passed the tipping point in what until recently has been a tense political controversy. Why? Industry leaders, nongovernmental organizations, Al Gore, and public attention have all played a role. At the core, however, it’s about the relentless progress of science. As data accumulate, denialists retreat to the safety of the Wall Street Journal op-ed page or seek social relaxation with old pals from the tobacco lobby from whom they first learned to “teach the controversy.” Meanwhile, political judgments are in, and the game is over. Indeed, on this page last week, a member of Parliament described how the European Union and his British colleagues are moving toward setting hard targets for greenhouse gas reductions.

Now that the scientific consensus is clear, it’s time to ask what the U.S. Congress is doing to keep pace with this new reality...

Calgary: Residents too cold to spend one hour per year trying to prevent runaway global warming?

Building on Earth Hour
The awareness-raising event has grown since it began in Sydney, Australia, in 2007; however, Calgary has repeatedly come under fire for its lacklustre participation. According to Enmax, the overall reduction in power Saturday "was so minuscule, that it couldn't even be attributed to that particular event," said spokeswoman Doris Kaufmann.

Edmonton's participation was even worse, with power rising 1.01 per cent over the same day and time last year, according to Epcor.

The success of Earth Hour, however, shouldn't be measured by the mere reduction in power consumption over a 60-minute period. Calgary's weak showings over the years perhaps reflect nothing more than the fact cold weather requires residents to keep warm. It's easier to win greater participation in warm climates, where turning off the power for an hour isn't particularly painful.

Schellnhuber has indicated many times that democracy is flawed and is a nuisance. It’s getting in the way of solving the ”world’s crises” (like zero temperature growth over the last 15 years).
Transportation Master Plan
The worst part is that all these “masterplans” are based on flaky, often times fraudulent and alarmist science – all designed to promote panic rather than reason. This has already led to disastrous results (biofuel induced global hunger or landscape desecration by windmills to name two) and will surely lead to even greater disasters.

Another example of a so-called masterplan that has come to our attention is the latest European proposal to ban all fossil-fuel-powered cars from cities by 2050 – again all this with little or no thought about the potential conseqeunces this junk-science-based regulatory hyper-zealousness may have...

Isle Royale moose population allegedly linked to CO2 levels; we know this because (cough-mumble)

Isle Royale down to 2 female wolves; extinction possible | Duluth News Tribune | Duluth, Minnesota
...Winter ticks, which posed a severe threat to the Isle Royale moose in 2007, have declined significantly since then.

Researchers say moose appear to have hit bottom at 385 in 2007, though their numbers remain less than half their historic, long-term average. Scientists speculate that warmer weather has spurred parasites and other problems for the moose.

“We’ve been thinking they are about to pull out of their really low period. And the habitat has rebounded, with lower moose numbers, so there’s lots of food for them to eat,” Vucetich said. “If they don’t come back stronger fairly soon, then the impact (from climate change) may be bigger than we had previously thought.”

Moose came to the island around 1900, peaking at 2,445 in 1995.

Good thing that the headline writer specified that the temperature is in Fahrenheit.

CLIMATE OF CORRUPTION: POLITICS AND POWER BEHIND THE GLOBAL WARMING HOAX

By Larry Bell
...
For those who simply want an introduction to government-sponsored climate research and results or for the “old timers” in the air-science profession like me, this is a good synopsis of the latest fads and fallacies of the ill-advised “industry” of global-warming science.
Got Problems? Blame Global Warming - Larry Bell - The Bell Tells for You - Forbes
During a 2001 interview when he was asked how global warming would affect the scene outside an upper-level New York City GISS building 20 years hence Dr. Hansen replied, “Well, there will be more traffic.” He went on to say, “The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be underwater. And there will be tape across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won’t be there. The trees in the median strip will change”. Then he added, “There will be more police cars.” When asked why, he explained, “Well, you know what happens when the heat goes up.”

You gotta give him some credit. At least he was right about that traffic!

Quadrant Online - "Without the CO2 we’d all be dead"
I heard some of the speeches at the rallies and thought them a bit technical. I think we need simpler messages, so to give it a go I wrote the following poem – a bit of doggerel to re-inforce just one point.
The Blackboard » Un-naturally Trendy.
A reader pointed me to a very interesting paper entitled,
“Nature’s style: Naturally trendy”, Timothy A. Cohn and Harry F. Lins. Evidently, this paper made the rounds as one that suggests the trend in temperatures in the 20th century might not be statistically significant.
