Among Climate Scientists, a Dispute Over ‘Tipping Points’ - NYTimes.com
Environmentalists and some climate experts are increasingly warning of impending tipping points in their efforts to stir public concern. The term confers a sense of immediacy and menace to potential threats from a warming climate — dangers that otherwise might seem too distant for people to worry about.

But other scientists say there is little hard evidence to back up specific predictions of catastrophe. They worry that the use of the term “tipping point” can be misleading and could backfire, fueling criticism of alarmism and threatening public support for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Is this a picture of an alarmist somehow saving polar bear cubs by writing using the light of a computer monitor?
WWF's Earth Hour has already been translated into nearly 30 languages, and will literally be happening from pole to pole – including our very own ice team on the Arctic Ocean and the UK Operations team here in London.

Given that the Operations Room runs around the clock, this opposes certain logistical issues, but we’re still doing our bit. Are you?
CA Academy of Science AGW display apparently not very popular « Watts Up With That?
For the most part these displays were ignored, except for a few casual observers seeking refuge from the long lines at the real science displays. This lack of interest and participation seems to reflect the recent Gallup Polls indicating people are not really concerned about global warming, or ocean warming either. It could be our children have caught on to the scam, or they have reached global warming overload for the school lessons, and want some real science for change of pace.
AP Continues to Perpetuate US-Kyoto 1997 Mythology | NewsBusters.org
Finally, the mythology in previous AP articles on the topic is that Bush "rejected" Kyoto, when the fact is that it was never submitted it to the Senate in the first place.

The difference between 2009 and 1997 is not, as Capiello implies, that Congress is controlled by Democrats. It's that there is a Congress that happens to be controlled by Democrats may be, as Capiello claims without qualification and without providing clear evidence, "moving to embrace mandatory limits on greenhouse gases."

One thing that hasn't changed is AP's dogged and disgraceful insistence on misleading readers about what really happened with Kyoto.

Compact Fluorescent Bulbs Draw Quality Complaints - NYTimes.com
SAN FRANCISCO — It sounds like such a simple thing to do: buy some new light bulbs, screw them in, save the planet.

But a lot of people these days are finding the new compact fluorescent bulbs anything but simple. Consumers who are trying them say they sometimes fail to work, or wear out early. At best, people discover that using the bulbs requires learning a long list of dos and don’ts.

Take the case of Karen Zuercher and her husband, in San Francisco. Inspired by watching the movie “An Inconvenient Truth,” they decided to swap out nearly every incandescent bulb in their home for energy-saving compact fluorescents. Instead of having a satisfying green moment, however, they wound up coping with a mess.
...
Irritation seems to be rising as more consumers try compact fluorescent bulbs, which now occupy 11 percent of the nation’s eligible sockets, with 330 million bulbs sold every year. Consumers are posting vociferous complaints on the Internet after trying the bulbs and finding them lacking.

Remember that when Greenland was green it was not underwater. That fact flies in the face of the scare mongering about the melting ice cap. Andrew Kenny - Superstition, not science, feeds top folly of our age
Man-made global warming, the notion that mankind is changing the world's climate in a dangerous way, never had much grounding in science. It has now departed from proper science altogether and become a millennial religion of rich people in rich countries.

We can expect the well-funded Jeremiahs of climate change to produce apocalyptic warnings of disaster (sea levels rising by metres, disappearing ice caps and other such nonsense) before the Copenhagen climate negotiations in December, where the faithful hope to persuade governments to damage their economies with foolish efforts to reduce greenhouse emissions.

There is overwhelming scientific evidence that the slight warming of the 20th century was perfectly natural - no different from previous natural warming periods. It had little, if anything, to do with rising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Errors in IPCC climate science » Some early contact with bias and mythology in the Australian Bureau of Meteorology BoM near two decades ago
I first got to know the BoM in 1991 when GW was in its infancy and was surprised at the extent to which PC myths coloured peoples thinking.

I noted very early on that many long term small town sites were as warm in the 1880’s as they were in the 1980’s and when I asked about this - BoM sages wisely told me, “Ah yes, that is due to the introduction of the Stevenson screen thermometer enclosure into Australia in 1907 when the BoM was formed.” It was explained that older more primitive exposures could cause the higher readings. Nobody espoused an alternative view, it was group-think.
More stunning stupidity from Tom Friedman - Mother Nature’s Dow - NYTimes.com
It’s true, Mother Nature doesn’t tell us with one simple number how she’s feeling. But if you follow climate science, what has been striking is how insistently some of the world’s best scientists have been warning — in just the past few months — that climate change is happening faster and will bring bigger changes quicker than we anticipated just a few years ago. Indeed, if Mother Nature had a Dow, you could say that it, too, has been breaking into new (scientific) lows.

Catlin Expedition: Impaired Judgment? « Watts Up With That?
[Steve Goddard] What is the point of taking a lot of measurements at one location on the same day? Arctic ice continuously shifts and melts or freezes, and the ice they are standing on will have moved hundreds or thousands of miles by next year. The temperature is -42C. No doubt the ice is getting thicker at that temperature.

Meanwhile, the expedition sponsor (HRH The Prince of Wales) has been jetting around South America enjoying the life of entitlement currently reserved for global warming patrons. The formula is simple - as long as a celebrity keeps talking about global warming, their carbon footprint and lifestyle excesses are above reproach. Why, for me, ‘Earth Hour’ is a conscience salving stunt …
TURNING OFF my lights for an hour tonight is no hardship whatsoever. I can light a candle, open a bottle of red and bung on a DVD. Actually, it’s a pleasant romantic option for a Saturday evening. Even though I am a paid up member of WWF, I consider the idea to be a silly scam: a publicity stunt which has the danger of salving our consciences with feel-good factor and lulling us into a false ‘do-good’ sense that we are actually helping.

Truth is, my computer uses way more energy than all my light bulbs each minute I use it, and with twenty per cent of global warming attributable to beef production, we’d all be far better off boycotting a burger for an hour. But that would be far too political. It’s not surprising that large corporations and businesses are happily signing up. Many offices are closed on Saturday evenings. It will, in fact, save them money.
Worldchanging: Bright Green: The only way a reporter ought to look at a climate skeptic is down.
Having wasted 20 years here in the U.S. on a completely non-factual "debate" about whether fossil fuels were implicated in climate change, it's a bit shocking to see this story by Azadeh Ensha, where an industry-funded spokesperson is allowed to get away with the statement, "It is beyond dispute that any connection between meat production and global warming is a false one."

On the Arctic alarmists - Unclear on the concept: More about the brutal cold and the importance of fossil fuel
...they work through the tough periods by thinking about various short and long term goals (from their next hot [fossil-fueled] meal, to the promise of better [ie warmer] weather).
...
For example, all explorers find it extremely frustrating to be stuck in a tent due to bad weather, consuming precious [fossil] fuel and food while the drift of the ice is taking them backwards every second! (‘Two steps forward, one step back’, March 18th).
...
Fear may also be an acute state, when there is anticipation of a potentially negative outcome occurring. Imagine seeing polar bear tracks (‘we are not alone’ – March 13th), being woken up by the sound of the ice smashing around your tent in the middle of the night (‘fractures’ - March 3rd), or waiting in a tent in terrible conditions while your food runs out (‘resupply’ – March 19th). If fear of pain is something which might concern you, imagine being in Martin’s shoes (quite literally) in those moments every morning when he knows he needs to pull on his boots over his frostbitten toes. As he commented in his BBC news blog, “it is the worst part of his day” and his anguish is clear to be seen.

The right to be cold?: F is for Frostbite
Early explorers to the Poles suffered greatly from frostbite because they did not know how to protect themselves from icy winds and harsh conditions. In1898, when Robert Peary made various attempts to reach the North Pole – he lost eight toes to frostbite on one journey! The toes came off his feet when his boots were taken off back at base after one particular expedition…not a pleasant experience. Nevertheless, this situation didn’t stop Peary! He said: `A few toes were not much to give to achieve the Pole’.
State board's global warming standards irk environmentalists
Language that instructed students to "analyze and evaluate different views on the existence of global warming," which had been offered as an amendment and was adopted unanimously in an initial vote Thursday, led to outrage among environmental groups.

"In a last-minute assault on science and sensibility, the board appears to be supporting its own ideological views rather than those of proven science," said Ramon Alvarez, a senior scientist with Environmental Defense Fund.

The chairman of the state board, Don McLeroy, called the standards "perfectly good."

"Conservatives like me think the evidence (for human contributions to global warming) is a bunch of hooey," McLeroy said.

But the state board approved standards that engage some of the underlying causes and effects of global warming, including one that calls on students to "analyze the empirical relationship between the emissions of carbon dioxide, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels, and the average global temperature trends over the past 150 years" and another to "describe the effect of pollution on global warming, glacial and ice cap melting, greenhouse effect, ozone layer, and aquatic viability."

The current standards, which were adopted about a decade ago, barely touch on climate change.

"Asking students to independently discover the relationship between ice melting and global warming is important," said James Canup, executive director of the Texas League of Conservation Voters. "But the main message coming out of there is that Texas is setting a bad standard by putting question marks next to global warming in the textbooks."

Thus cap-and-trade would practically guarantee disastrous climate change for our children and grandchildren."

We need to be guided on this internationally by a combination of science and pragmatism. It does not serve anyone to do a weak-kneed compromise that doesn't move us in the direction that the science is telling us we need to go. By the same token, it doesn't serve anybody to have an agreement that is scientifically pristine and perfect and which cannot be supported by our public back home."

Obama's global warming [scam] could be tough sell in Indiana
Americans United for Change and MoveOn.org Political Action are running ads on radio, TV and the Internet urging Hoosiers to ask Bayh and other Indiana lawmakers to back Obama's budget proposal, which includes the cap-and-trade plan.

If Washington does act to reduce the burning of fossil fuels, the main cause of global warming, Indiana would be hit harder than many other states. More than 90 percent of the power consumed in Indiana is generated by coal, which sends more heat-trapping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere for the amount of energy produced than any other energy source.

Indiana residents and businesses long have enjoyed some of the lowest electricity rates in the nation, about 20 percent lower than the national average. The low rates are one reason the state is the most manufacturing-dependent in the nation.

Plants use CO2 in photosynthesis to make carbohydrates.
...

In various parts of the world—notably in Italy, Java, and Yellowstone National Park in the United States—carbon dioxide is formed underground and issues from fissures in the earth. Natural mineral waters such as Vichy water sparkle (effervesce) because excess carbon dioxide that dissolved in them under pressure collects in bubbles and escapes when the pressure is released.
...
Carbon dioxide has varied commercial uses. Its greatest use as a chemical is in the production of carbonated beverages; it provides the sparkle in carbonated beverages such as soda water. Formed by the action of yeast or baking powder, carbon dioxide causes the rising of bread dough. The compound is also used in water softening, in the manufacture of aspirin and lead paint pigments, and in the Solvay process for the preparation of sodium carbonate. In some fire extinguishers carbon dioxide is expelled through a nozzle and settles on the flame, smothering it. It also has numerous nonchemical uses. It is used as a pressurizing medium and propellant, e.g., in aerosol cans of food, in fire extinguishers, in target pistols, and for inflating life rafts. Because it is relatively inert, it is used to provide a nonreactive atmosphere, e.g., for packaging foods, such as coffee, that can be spoiled by oxidation during storage. Solid carbon dioxide, known as dry ice, is used as a refrigerating agent.

My notes on "The Media and Climate Change: Global Agenda 2008"

Andy Revkin video, March 2008: University of Delaware

29:00 Revkin talks about the threat of CO2-induced sea level rises: "...[it's] kind of like two people in San Francisco watching a parked car that's starting to roll down the hill, and they're arguing about whether it's going 1 mph or 3 mph. The problem is the car's rolling downhill and it's going to be a catastrophe when it hits something in a few minutes."

39:30 On Katrina: "The reality of what happened in New Orleans is completely simple, and has nothing to do with global warming."

40:16 "We folks in the media, we love hot imagery.  We love drowning polar bears, we love flooded cities.  We may say we hate them, but to some extent we love them, because it's a powerful story..."

63:55  "There's no one who questions if we burn it all with unlimited emissions we will have a profoundly different climate. And not just that--we'll be setting in motion as the IPCC made very clear, and there's no real dispute--many many centuries in which there'll be no new normal climate, and no new normal coastline.  Whether the rate is 1 foot, 2 feet, 3 feet per century, every century you'll have to draw a new map..."

71:36  "This is our diplomatic corps two years ago in Montreal, at these climate talks.  They're really good people, they're serving this administration and its interests.  Their mandate, their portfolio that they brought to Montreal was not to negotiate.  They could do anything they wanted for those two weeks--just don't negotiate. This is a treaty meeting--isn't that where you're supposed to negotiate?! So if they look constipated...They look like they have to go to the bathroom."

Bonn 1, blog 1: The ‘pre-sessionals’ « It’s Getting Hot In Here
COP15 in Copenhagen this December – the meeting where governments are set to decide whether they will come together to lead on solving climate change peacefully, or whether they force us to take things into our own hands – is not the only UN meeting on climate change this year. There are three important ‘intersessional’ meetings of the UNFCCC bodies and working groups – ‘Bonn 1′, in Germany for the first two weeks of April, ‘Bonn 2′, for the first two weeks in June, and ‘Bangkok’ in
September.
...
I am in a big room at the ‘Maritim’ hotel in Bonn, Germany, for the ‘Pre-Sessional events’ – before the proper negotiations start on Sunday. There is a long desk on a stage at the front of the room, where the Chair of the session sits, alongside a rapporteur and the UNFCCC Executive Secretary, Yvo de Boer – who looks positively bored. I sort of feel sorry for him. There are rows of desks for the 196 countries of the world, with two seats of each. Then maybe another 300 seats for NGO representatives at the back of the room, which quickly filled up. For people who arrived late (like myself and about 50 others) we can sit on the floor in the corridors. There are also far too many lights on – a large star-shaped arrangement of decorative lightbulbs, crystals and mirrors adorns the ceiling.

Today, the Chairs of each of the UN negotiating bodies are giving presentations, giving their summary of the state of negotiations and their recommendations for focusing discussion over the next few weeks. They are taking clarifying question-and-answers from the plenary floor. It is a lot like in any consensus-based meeting of activists where we agree on the process before going on to discuss the content – except their all wearing suits and being very ‘polite’ – to me, the room seems bereft of the passion which should be evident when dealing with such important issues as the very future of the planet and humanity. And there are certainly no twinkling fingers in the air when someone says something that we support.

Gore implores ETSU audience to help battle global warming - Kingsport Times-News Online
Aside from these, Gore said warmer temperatures cause disease-spreading parasites, such as ticks and mosquitoes, to be more widespread. He also said humans have four advantages over germs — colder winters, colder nights, stable climates and rich biodiversity — all of which are hindered by global warming.

Gore said climate changes have led to more deaths from heat waves, shellfish poisoning, and an increase in cholera and kidney stones.

“At present, the world is not equipped now, either in developed or developing countries, for the emergence or re-emergence of these diseases that are spreading because of the new conditions global warming have put into play,” he said.

Gore said the United States must take the lead in addressing the climate crisis and commended President Barack Obama’s environmental efforts, but stated the environmental crisis is not a partisan issue.

“I don’t understand why bipartisanship gets into it,” he said. “I don’t get that.”
Do You Agree With Gore?
The environment is in peril, the former Vice President told a big crowd at ETSU Thursday night. He calls it an undisputable fact.

Still, I hear from lots of people who unapologetically DO dispute Gore’s claims. A friend who recycles, loves the outdoors, and calls himself an environmentalist says he has more faith in the earth’s God-given ability to “defend itself” than other envionmentalists who “cry doom and gloom.“ Still others flatly challenge the science and say claims have been made that can’t be backed by data. If you don’t believe me, just listen to talk radio.

Nobel-winning climate [scam] scientist speaks at Expo Center tonight – OregonLive.com
Schneider contributed to a 2007 global warming report issued by the United Nations that painted a near-apocalyptic vision of Earth's future: More than 1 billion people would be in desperate need of water, extreme food shortages in Africa, a blighted landscape ravaged by fires and floods, and millions of species sentenced to extinction.

"Don't be poor in a hot country, don't live in hurricane alley, watch out about being on the coasts or in the Arctic, and it's a bad idea to be on a high mountain," Schneider told the media at the time.

Widely quoted on the latest climate research, Schneider speaks often of the challenge scientists face in explaining their ideas to the public.

"Nature is a perverse old girl, and she doesn't tell us how much (warming) is due to her and how much is due to us," said Schneider said in 2006. "So we look for fingerprints that you'd expect if the cause was humans rather than nature."

What many caught up in this hype don’t realize is that not using energy for an hour is worlds away from what the WWF and other environmental lobbying and political groups are proposing. David Frum: The Shock Doctrine - Disaster environmentalism in action - Full Comment
In the same vein, if all we really wanted to do was reduce the emission of carbon, our preferred policy instrument would be a carbon tax. That tax could be easily set at a level just sufficient to offset the relatively modest price differential between coal and nuclear power: just a few cents per kilowatt-hour.

By contrast, a tax that raises the price of electricity high enough to make solar and wind competitive would trigger a revolution. Solar and wind can only compete in a market so gnarled and manipulated by abstruse regulations that nobody can decode the cost of anything. Which is why so many environmentalists prefer the Byzantine complexities of cap-and-trade to a carbon tax. The carbon tax is too simple and too transparent. It shows too much!

Outsiders to this hermetic debate are entitled to better explanations than we have been getting. The cultural and ideological commitments of environmentalists need to be declared. If carbon dioxide truly is creating a planetary emergency, then previous ideological bugaboos must give way. If conservatives can learn to live with a tax on coal, then environmentalists can learn to live with nuclear power. Devotion to renewables is not energy policy. It is fantasy.

An Example Of The Misuse Of The Publication Process “Model Ensemble Estimates of Climate Change Impacts on UK Seasonal Precipitation Extremes” by Fowler and Ekström 2009
Since there is no way to validate their model results for the time period 2070-2100 and the IPCC models have not even demonstrated skill in predicting regional climate extremes for the current climate, the results in the Fowler and Ekström are just hypotheses. It is a disppointing statement of climate science that hypotheses, which have not been tested, are presented as papers in the literature.
As I See It » The science of Global Warming is disputed, but so what?
Is anyone upset?

Upset, that in spite of so much contrary evidence, the global warming crowd is going ahead with protections that are not needed. Protections that will cause the masses to suffer economic hardships that will be blamed on the free-market capitalistic system.

Why aren’t we the people screaming?

The Madoff scam was supposedly big time, but this one will affect millions of people, but it is sanctioned by the government, which makes it OK.
Even GE backs away from offshore wind - Green Inc. Blog - NYTimes.com
Six years ago, before the project was stalled by powerful political headwinds, Cape Wind developers selected General Electric to do the work.

“G.E. Wind Energy manufactures the most advanced offshore wind turbines available today,” Jim Gordon, the managing general partner of Cape Wind, said at the time.

But G.E. no longer makes any offshore turbines, according to Steve Fludder, the head of G.E.’s green business unit, who sat down for a wide-ranging interview with The Times on Wednesday.

G.E. has instead focused its turbine business where it sees the vast majority of demand: on land. Offshore wind, said Mr. Fludder, is “just a vastly costlier proposition — not for us but for the world.”
Arne Jon Isachsen: To drive carbon emissions down, let's allocate every individual a "pollution" entitlement | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk
Idealism alone is not enough to drive carbon emissions down: we should give each individual a pollution entitlement
Incentives, incentives
Hmm, now, imagine you are a ruthless dictator desirous of making the most possible money out of your control of your country and its people.

It’s not entirely beyond the bounds of believability that such exist now, is it?

So what’s your best option under this scheme? Slaughter the population and sell their carbon quotas of course.

An interesting set of incentives to organise, don’t you think?
CNSNews.com - Government Should Compel Consumers to Use Alternative Energy, Congressman Says
(CNSNews.com) - Government policy should be crafted to raise the price of carbon-emitting energy sources so consumers are compelled to choose alternative energy, House Democratic Conference Chairman John Larson (D-Conn.) told CNSNews.com on Thursday.

Larson agreed that such a policy would likely result in higher electricity prices for consumers but said this is needed to protect the environment from the possible “catastrophic results” of not implementing a pro-green energy policy.

Some Republicans who spoke with CNSNews.com at the Capitol agreed that electricity prices would go up, and they dismissed President Barack Obama’s cap-and-trade plan as little more than a large tax on energy producers, the cost of which is passed onto consumers.
...
“Of course” Obama’s plan will drive up energy costs, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) told CNSNews.com. “The president’s proposal is unacceptable, because it’s just being used as a source of revenue.”

Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) told CNSNews.com: “Of course the cost is going to rise. When people think of cap and trade, they are going to think of a giant tax increase.”
"Yabba-Dabba-Doo!": Electric car 'uses 50 times less power than petrol vehicle'

FOXNews.com - U.N. 'Climate Change' [Scam] Plan Would Likely Shift Trillions to Form New World Economy - United Nations
A United Nations document on "climate change" that will be distributed to a major environmental conclave next week envisions a huge reordering of the world economy, likely involving trillions of dollars in wealth transfer, millions of job losses and gains, new taxes, industrial relocations, new tariffs and subsidies, and complicated payments for greenhouse gas abatement schemes and carbon taxes — all under the supervision of the world body.
