Global cooling - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the 1970s, there was increasing awareness that estimates of global temperatures showed cooling since 1945.
Time Mag Flashback: 1974 Issue Warns of Man-Made 'Global Cooling' | NewsBusters.org
From the Jun 24, 1974, Time Magazine, entitled: "Another Ice Age?"
As they review the bizarre and unpredictable weather pattern of the past several years, a growing number of scientists are beginning to suspect that many seemingly contradictory meteorological fluctuations are actually part of a global climatic upheaval. However widely the weather varies from place to place and time to time, when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age.

Telltale signs are everywhere —from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest.Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F. Although that figure is at best an estimate, it is supported by other convincing data. When Climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena analyzed satellite weather data for the Northern Hemisphere, they found that the area of the ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12% in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round.

Using assumptions based on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Assessment Reports, if the U.S. as a whole stopped emitting all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions immediately, the ultimate impact on projected global temperature rise would be a reduction, or a “savings,” of approximately 0.08°C by the year 2050 and 0.17°C by the year 2100—amounts that are, for all intents and purposes, negligible.

Is the carbon tax great? Just ask the banker at your table | Herald Sun Andrew Bolt Blog
What a curious way for Julia Gillard to sell a tax - even to businessmen - which we were originally told was needed simply to save the world from disastrous overheating:

International carbon markets will cover billions of consumers this decade.  Ask the bankers at your table whether they want Australia to clip that ticket.  We’re going to help them get their share.

Hmm. That explains why so many bankers are global warming preachers, too. Think of those billions! Those tickets to clip! That share of the dosh!

Governors Demand Wind PTC to Cover State Costs — MasterResource
The United States is in the midst of a fiscal crisis. If Congress and the White House are unable to reach agreement on spending by January 1, crushing tax increases and draconian budget cuts will go into effect sending the country’s already weakened economy into another destructive recession.

Against this backdrop, the 23-member Governor’s Wind Energy Coalition put aside their own states’ $2+ trillion deficits[1] to deliver a message to Congress — extend the wind production tax credit (PTC).

PJ Media » Global Cooling: A Far More Dangerous Fate
Far more people die due to excessive cold than due to excessive warmth. Cold weather is obviously much harder on our bodies than is warm weather. That is why people retire to Florida or Arizona, and not Alaska.

History demonstrates that warming has been good, and cooling bad, for civilization. That is why geologists named past warm periods “optimums” and cold times “dark ages.”

It was during the warmest period since the end of the last ice age, a time called the Holocene Optimum between 9,000 and 5,000 years ago, that the first civilizations flourished in the Fertile Crescent of the Middle East. Other warm periods, climate optimums during Minoan, Roman, and Medieval times, and of course, the modern warm period, have all resulted in increased food productivity, lower death rates, and greater all-around prosperity.

In contrast, cold periods have been very rough on societies. The Dark Ages Cold Period between about 600 and 900 AD was a time of great retreat of agriculture and depression of human activity. There were plagues and starvation in many regions and people were forced to migrate away from farms in central Europe and Scandinavia.

The Little Ice Age (LIA) from about 1350 to 1850 was even worse; there was great misery for people around the world.

Presidential Press Conference: Obama's Global Warming Gospel
What jumped out at me most as lacking integrity was Obama’s adamant statement that the world is getting warmer, as if there could be no denying it. It jumped out at me because even though I knew the claim to be patently false, Obama said it with such conviction that I had to conclude he actually believed it. And that’s when I realized that the President was making a statement of faith.

At first, I cheered his response. (Not, like, out loud. I’m not that geeky.) The reporter’s silly and leading question implied a connection between global warming/climate change and Hurricane Sandy. The questioner suggested that the storm might provide political impetus for pushing through a carbon tax that would — somehow — end such storms. Obama responded by pointing out that there was no reason to see a causal connection between that storm and global warming. Correct. We agree on something, Mr. President. It’s a place to start.

But then he started spouting this false gospel about global warming. I call it a gospel because it claims to be good news that requires repentance, it promises salvation for mankind through sacrifice, and it requires far more faith than the gospel according to any Biblical writers.

Wait, what?!: Revkin wrote in Aug. 2000 that James Hansen fingered other emissions, NOT CO2, for the warming seen in recent decades

Study Proposes New Strategy to Stem Global Warming - New York Times
An influential expert on global warming who for nearly 20 years has pressed countries to cut emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases now says the emphasis on carbon dioxide may be misplaced. Instead, he and a team of scientists have concluded that the quickest way to slow warming is to cut other such greenhouse gases first.
...
The expert, Dr. James E. Hansen, and his colleagues conclude in a new analysis that the warming seen in recent decades has been caused mainly by other heat-trapping emissions -- methane, chlorofluorocarbons, black particles of diesel and coal soot and compounds that create the ozone in smog -- which are easier to control than carbon dioxide, with many of them already on the decline.
...
''The prospects for having a modest climate impact instead of a disastrous one are quite good, I think,'' Dr. Hansen said in an interview.

To demand that my country join an international treaty within the next 2 years that cuts global warming pollution by 90% in developed countries and by more than half worldwide in time for the next generation to inherit a healthy earth; 2. To take personal action to help solve the climate crisis by reducing my own CO2 pollution as much as I can and offsetting the rest to become "carbon neutral;" 3. To fight for a moratorium on the construction of any new generating facility that burns coal without the capacity to safely trap and store the CO2; 4. To work for a dramatic increase in the energy efficiency of my home, workplace, school, place of worship, and means of transportation; 5. To fight for laws and policies that expand the use of renewable energy sources and reduce dependence on oil and coal; 6. To plant new trees and to join with others in preserving and protecting forests; and, 7. To buy from businesses and support leaders who share my commitment to solving the climate crisis and building a sustainable, just, and prosperous world for the 21st century.

I am Al Gore, founder and chairman of the Climate Reality Project – AMA : IAmA
There are at least 15 deeply researched separate lines of evidence that all confirm man-made global warming. They are all consistent, each with the others. Every National Academy of Science on the planet agrees with the consensus. The Academies describe the evidence as "indisputable". Every professional scientific society in every field related to climate science and earth science also agree. And 97-98% of climate scientists worldwide most actively publishing also agree. Animals and plants also agree -- in that they are moving their ranges by latitude and altitude to find climate niches similar to the ones in which they evolved. Even if you leave climate science completely out of it and just measure extreme temperatures, the statistical record of global temperatures shows that three-standard deviation events have increased from 0.25% of the time (from 1951-1980) to 10% of the time now. There is as strong a consensus as you will find in science, with the possible exception of the existence of gravity.

A Response to the President's Comments on Global Warming — Bastardi
Before we adopt carbon policy that can hurt our already struggling economy, there needs to be an unbiased debate about what is actually driving our climate. A leader truly interested in the good of his nation would allow the lifeblood of the economy, which is still fossil fuel energy sources, to flow freely while cultivating the alternative energy sources in a way where someday they can compete and drive down prices further. If the president is serious about doing what is in the best interest of the nation, then he will acknowledge the reality of the AGW situation: It has paused, and in the coming years will be proven to be cyclical in nature as cooling becomes more established.
