Welcome to the petrol prices warmenists demanded

Welcome to the petrol prices warmenists demanded | Herald Sun Andrew Bolt Blog
Time the left side of the brain knew what the right side was thinking. First, the green “solutions” to global warming truly do involve pain. Second, despite this pain we’re feeling already, emissions continue to soar, meaning this is barely the entree, and prices must rise far more still. Third, given this, it makes sense to weigh the cost of “solutions” to global warming with their benefits, to see whether it wouldn’t just be cheaper, after all, to do not much.

And maybe voters will finally have an incentive to check the assumptions of the global warming alarmists. Isn’t it true that the planet hasn’t warmed since 1998? Isn’t it true that the latest predictions are that it might not warm for another decade or two at least? If so, how much faith can we put in the models upon which the warming alarmists relied to predict rapid warming and to demand a painful tax on carbon?

Another UN idiot blames carbon dioxide for Lake Chad's drying up

allAfrica.com: West Africa: Jan Egeland's Sahel Climate Change Diary - Day 5 (Page 1 of 1)
As I wind up this intensive trip to three countries and dozens of sites over the last five days, I more and more think that this journey should become obligatory for all the delegates going to the Copenhagen climate change conference at the end of next year. It would have reminded people what it is all about, namely life or death for millions of people. There is so much at stake, so much has already been lost by the most vulnerable people.
From a related link here:
Gore says “global warming” dried up Lake Chad in Africa. It did not. Over-extraction of water and changing agricultural patterns dried the lake, which was also dry in 8500BC, 5500BC, 1000BC and 100BC. Ms. Kreider says, “There are multiple stresses upon Lake Chad.” However, the scientific consensus is that at present those “stresses” do not include “global warming.”

"I am a global warming alarmist."

Global Warming Alarmism
But perhaps even more pernicious is the way that “carbon credits” are distributed.

The credits are best described as a pulled-out-of-thin-air government-created fiat currency, that is accepted only by the government in exchange for the government’s permission to let you emit CO2. (If ever a system was perfectly set up to be abused and politicized by politicians, this is it.)

Government bureaucrats will decide sector by sector and industry by industry which companies get the credits. Implicitly, that same decision by government regulators also determines which companies will need to buy credits from the politically-connected companies who could get their carbon credits for free.
Update: From a related Coyote Blog post, entitled "How Mussolini-Style Fascism Almost Came to the US":
First, it was the National Recovery Act, where FDR explicitly tried to creat an economic system modelled on Mussolini-style fascism. This was killed by the Supreme Court. But the will of government to create an economic system where private companies win and lose based on how well connected they are to politicians never goes away. The latest attempt to set up such a managed system was via the Lieberman-Warner climate bill...

Neve Campbell cares so very much about the environment that she's "seriously thinking" of replacing her Beemer with a Prius!

I have a BMW now, but I’m seriously thinking of getting a Toyota Prius. It just makes sense, it’s better for the environment.”

Rational stuff from George Bush

Interview of President Bush by Gianni Riotta, Rai TV, Italy
In terms of the current energy issue, we're too dependent on hydrocarbons. World demand is such, relative to supply, that the price of energy is high. And therefore, we need to be spending monies on new technologies to enable us to become less dependent on oil. And I'm a big nuclear power guy. I believe the United States must be much more aggressive expanding nuclear power -- for two reasons: one, less dependency on hydrocarbons; and two, it will make us better stewards of the environment. I mean, if you're concerned about global warming, one thing you ought to be concerned about then is making sure that we've got power generated from a clean source of energy -- a renewable source of energy, which is nuclear power.

The food prices concern me, obviously. But the truth of the matter is, one reason why food price is so high is because energy prices are high. I mean, when you think about it, farming is a pretty energy-intensive business -- fertilizer is an energy; driving a tractor is an energy; crops to markets require energy. And so the crux of a lot of the problem is the energy prices.

So we have a "God-given" right to have a beach bonfire, but no right to car commute alone to our night job at the children's hospital?

"If you want to save the planet, start by fixing the traffic lights"

Cascadia - Articles/News: If you want to save the planet, start by fixing the traffic lights
While not a panacea, technology offers immediate solutions. Department of Transportation studies, for example, show that deploying traffic light "signal optimization technologies" such as "adaptive signaling" and "traffic responsive signaling" reduces fuel consumption by 10 percent to 15 percent. With nearly 76 percent of vehicle-miles driven on urban streets, a 15 percent reduction in fuel translates to saving 19.3 billion gallons of fuel a year. With all due respect to the hybrid crowd, those real, immediate savings are substantially more than would be saved if we could replace every one of the 41.5 million SUVs on the road with a similar SUV hybrid. That's because the savings in gas is relatively modest between the two when compared with the fuel that can be saved by making all the cars on the road more efficient.

Pounds 30bn Bid to Bury Carbon Waste in North Sea - Science - redOrbit
EXCLUSIVE: THE full scale of plans for a world-leading Pounds 30bn scheme to capture two-thirds of the region's CO2 emissions and store them under the North Sea is unveiled today.

Hundreds of jobs would be created by collecting carbon dioxide from power stations and manufacturing plants, liquefying it and piping it into empty gas fields under the North Sea from plants around the Humber estuary to stop the greenhouse gas escaping into the atmosphere.

A partnership led by Yorkshire Forward and involving major energy and industrial companies is bidding for Pounds 1bn from the Government to help set up the scheme, which could reduce the region's emissions from 90 million tonnes to just 30 million - and significantly reduce the UK's total emissions.

The first phase could be operational by 2014, although it could take up to 20 years for the full network to be up and running, connecting about 18 sites including power stations, steel and chemical works in a 40-mile area around the Humber which has the highest concentration of carbon emissions in Europe.

Installing the pipe structure would cost about Pounds 2bn, although the entire scheme - including all the infrastructure, pollution control and carbon capture technology - will reach Pounds 30bn. As well as the Government funding, Yorkshire Forward would contribute, energy and industrial partners would invest in carbon capture technology and private sector investors would be sought.

Andy Revkin's strange devotion to the Word of James Hansen

James Hansen: Tax C02 Emitters; Pay Citizens - Dot Earth - Climate Change and Sustainability - New York Times Blog
The entire carbon tax should be returned to the public, with a monthly deposit to their bank accounts, an equal share to each person (if no bank account provided, an annual check — social security number must be provided). No bureaucracy is needed to figure this out. If the initial carbon tax averages $1,200 per person per year, $100 is deposited in each account each month. (Detail: perhaps limit to four shares per family, with child shares being half-size, i.e., no marriage penalty but do not encourage population growth.)
...
But we can save the planet and alligators by making sure that not one thin dime of the carbon tax is siphoned off by lobbyists for their clients — 100% must be returned to citizens as dividend. Make this your motto: “100% or fight! No alligator shoes!

Check the position of your congresspersons. If they spout things like “global warming is the greatest hoax in the history of the universe,” check the shoes of the people who visit them or have dinner with them. Changes in Congress are needed if we want our children and grandchildren to win this one.

Because of great benefits to the nation, humanity and nature, this approach soon would be adopted by other nations, providing an obvious path toward international agreements.

If Revkin thinks that only "scientists" are qualified to comment on global warming science, I wonder why he feels that Hansen is qualified to offer detailed commentary on tax policy.

Senate climate bill fails

Note that our presidential candidates evidently didn't care enough about this issue to actually show up for this vote...
Senate climate bill blocked
Democratic leaders fell a dozen votes short of getting the 60 needed to end a Republican filibuster on the measure and bring the bill up for a vote. The 48-36 vote failed to reach even a majority, a disappointment to the bill's supporters.
...
"There is no tax increase," Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., one of the bill's chief sponsors said. She said the emissions trading system would provide tax relief to help people pay energy prices. And supporters disputed that it would substantially increase gasoline prices.

Four Democrats joined most Republicans in essentially killing the bill.

Both presidential candidates, Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain, were absent, although supporters of the bill said they had sent letters advising they would have voted for the bill.
McCain's letter is here.

The ‘Global Warming’ Mad House

Global Warming Politics
This is absolutely mind-blowing! Here is a Government Minister seemingly using the excuse of ‘global warming’ to prevent the progress of train travel. My, the Fat Controller has truly lost his top hat this time. What about all the folk who would move from plane to train? What about the severe overcrowding on our Inter-city services? What about the known demand for such services? And, why should the UK lag so far behind the rest of Europe where fast rail is concerned? France alone has over 1,000 miles of high-speed track, with more planned.

With this little bit of ministerial gerrymandering, we have surely plumbed the ‘global warming’ nadir. Not only is every type of weather, from drought to flood, to be caused by ‘global warming’, ‘global warming’ is now the portmanteau excuse of the Government to do either nothing or something. The argument works anyway it wishes.

Climate Change Conundrum…Global Warming or Cooling?

Whatever happened to global cooling?

What price liberty?

OpinionEditorials.com – What price liberty - Sernoffsky
That climate change exists is fact. That man has anything to do with it, or can stop it, is not. Although some of the global warmists may, indeed, have only the best of intentions, the very concept is little more than hubris, and the real impetus behind the movement has nothing to do with environment and everything to do with control. As Thomas Paine so succinctly put it, "The greatest tyrannies are always perpetuated in the name of the noblest causes."

Stephen Harper should call the Kyoto accord what it is -a train wreck

The Daily Observer - Ontario, CA
Could Prime Minister Stephen Harper or Environment Minister John Baird please explain what they mean when they say Canada continues to be a participant in the Kyoto accord?

How can we be a participant when the PM has said we cannot do what Kyoto requires of us -lower our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by an average of six per cent below 1990 levels between now and 2012?

We're 29.1 per cent above our Kyoto target. Achieving that target is the point of Kyoto.

Climate-Change Collapse

Political Diary - WSJ.com
Environmentalists are stunned that their global warming agenda is in collapse. Senator Harry Reid has all but conceded he lacks the vote for passage in the Senate and that it's time to move on. Backers of the Warner-Lieberman cap-and-trade bill always knew they would face a veto from President Bush, but they wanted to flex their political muscle and build momentum for 2009. That strategy backfired. The green groups now look as politically intimidating as the skinny kid on the beach who gets sand kicked in his face.

Those groups spent millions advertising and lobbying to push the cap-and-trade bill through the Senate. But it would appear the political consensus on global warming was as exaggerated as the alleged scientific consensus. Republicans have pounced on the high price of gasoline and have stressed that the climate legislation, by introducing a price on carbon dioxide emissions, would further raise the price of gas along with that of all other fossil fuels.

It is suspected that climate change may have reduced the amount of plankton for puffins to feed on, causing many to starve to death.

Thousands of scientists sign petition against global warming hysteria

Thousands of scientists sign petition against global warming
Gore’s movie claims there is a “consensus” and “settled science” about human-caused global warming. It was particularly unsettling because teachers all across the country showed the movie to students to indoctrinate them in global warming.

“Unfortunately, Mr. Gore’s movie contains many very serious incorrect claims which no informed, honest scientist could endorse,” said project spokesman and founder Art Robinson.

Robinson said Gore’s folly has gone so far that it is damaging people’s lives.

“The campaign to severely ration hydrocarbon energy technology has now been markedly expanded,” he said. “In the course of this campaign, many scientifically invalid claims about impending climate emergencies are being made. Simultaneously, proposed political actions to severely reduce hydrocarbon use now threaten the prosperity of Americans and the very existence of hundreds of millions of people in poorer countries,” Robinson said.

Is this politics versus science? Yes. Which is more dangerous, Gore’s false claims or the policies that spring from his deception?

Australia: Green-car fund to hurt economy

THE Federal Government's $500 million plan to subsidise Australian car manufacturers to build green cars is unlikely to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and would hurt the economy, says the Productivity Commission.

The Government's own think-tank also warned that far from encouraging innovative green technologies, the subsidies risked reducing productivity and repeating earlier policy mistakes which had contributed to the car industry's current problems.

Revkin claim: About half of CO2 emitted today "will still be aloft in a century"

Climate Debate: Democracy In Action? - Dot Earth - Climate Change and Sustainability - New York Times Blog
In the first three days of the debate on the bill, according to my rough calculation, about 246 million more tons of carbon dioxide flowed into the atmosphere from human activities worldwide. Something like half of that will still be aloft in a century.
That claim is contradicted here:
First according to the TAR, about 65% of the 730 GT of atmospheric CO2 is removed every year. That gives a mean residence time of 1.52 years, and a half-life of 0.65 years....The IPCC claims that CO2 is an LLGHG, a long-lived greenhouse gas, persisting in the atmosphere variously for decades, centuries, and even millennia, however the residence time by the IPCC formula and data is between 1.5 and perhaps 5 years.
Update: Note also this claim:
Senator Lieberman has estimated the bill would reduce overall U.S. greenhouse gas emissions by up to 63% by 2050. The bill states as its purpose: "Prompt, decisive action is critical, since global warming pollutants can persist in the atmosphere for more than a century."

Sherrod Brown attracting heat, and favors, in global warming bill debate - OPENERS - Ohio Politics Blog by The Plain Dealer
Brown says that maybe, with the right incentives and amendments, he could support a bill to limit carbon emissions (which in the case of Ohio would mean a reduction in burning coal for electricity). So Boxer is offering emissions allowances for states that rely the most on coal, and financial incentives to ease Ohioans' pain.

According to Greenwire, a specialty service covering environmental issues, Boxer is also offering to establish a clean-energy institute in Toledo. Brown already had proposed that the government invest heavily in developing clean energy. To get the bill passed, it appears that Boxer would make sure that some of that investment took place in Ohio.

CR: We need to shift to a no-growth society. Our resources are largely depleted and are being used unsustainably so it makes sense to recycle and reuse what resources we have and redesign our lives and economies on this basis. For instance, with the proper insulation and ventilation our bodies alone could heat our homes. But rather than investing in research and development that could make this possible and affordable, governments are subsiding the use of fossil fuels. From this post:
Note that carbon credits are a zero-value asset unless by government fiat they are declared to have some value. In the absence of global warming legislation and cap-and-trade schemes, this company's portfolio is worth nothing. Only the lobbying by Gore and his "non-profits" can make it have value.

Interestingly, this carbon credit portfolio also has zero value even under alternative CO2 reduction alternatives, such as a carbon tax. Under a carbon tax, there is much less opportunity for rent-seeking by powerful people like Gore, and carbon credit portfolios are worthless. Interestingly, Gore proposed a US carbon tax 15 years or so ago. My guess is that he would no longer support a carbon tax, as it would bankrupt many of his investments.

Bio-haven floating islands, made from 100% recycled materials from plastic drink bottles, are buoyant mats, planted much like a garden, and contain plants native to Long Island that have been grown in the students' classrooms, then launched onto the water. Layers of material are bonded together with foam, where the floating islands are intended to reduce nitrogen levels in the water system by supporting the growth of microbes and plants.

Could McCain actually be this stupid?

WEBCommentary(tm) - Uncle Sam’s Choice
In early 2008, sixth-graders at the Trail Ridge Middle School in Longmont, Colorado held a mock trial to decide, yes or no, if human beings have caused global warming. Pre-teen advocates for either side collected and analyzed data, then presented arguments to a jury of their peers who, after measuring the facts, voted, seven to four, that humans beings had not caused global warming.

In late May of 08, Dennis Miller recounted on his radio show how, during a visit to Senator McCain’s office in Washington, Miller asked the Senator via what reasoning McCain had arrived at his pro-anthropogenic global warming beliefs. As “proof” of anthropogenic global warming, the Senator produced a Gore-like “Snow-job of Kilimanjaro” photo that showed the volcano’s ice cap receding. Thereby, McCain revealed a lack of facility for the objective collection and analysis of factual data that even seven of eleven sixth-graders possess.

GOP tries to scuttle climate-change bill
"I am terribly disappointed with how the Republicans are directing their troops on the most important issue facing the world today, global warming," Reid said.
...
Republicans argued Tuesday that the bill is a heavy-handed government answer to climate change. The bill would require industry to pay for the right to emit greenhouse gases, which could yield over $6 trillion through 2050 in revenue the government could distribute.

Consumers affected by higher energy prices would receive $800 billion in tax rebates. Farms and forests could qualify for $300 billion in aid for conservation programs.

The auto industry would receive $68 billion to produce more efficient cars. States that take early action to cut emissions would get $566 billion.

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., complained that this new spending would be the "mother of all earmarks." He suspects the bill's sponsors are seeking to win support by "spreading this money around to various interest groups around the country."
