Remember, this is Richard Muller (some history here): Next time he needs some publicity, don't be surprised if he comes out yet again as a strong AGW believer sometime soon.Bill Clinton's Hero: Former Climate Skeptic Dr. Richard Muller | Fresh Dialoguesvan Diggelen: What’s your message to climate change skeptics?
Muller: Most of your skepticism is still valid. When something extraordinary happens in weather, such as the accidental occurrence of Hurricane Sandy hitting New Jersey and New York City just at the peak of tides — many people attribute the event to “Climate Change.” That’s not a scientific conclusion, and it is almost certainly wrong. Hurricanes are not increasing due to human causes (actually, they have been decreasing over the past 250 years). Tornadoes are not increasing due to human causes. (They too have been decreasing.) So please continue to be skeptical about most of the exaggerations you will continue to hear! Proper skepticism is at the heart of science, and attempts to suppress such skepticism represent the true anti-science movement.
...
van Diggelen: What are YOU doing to reduce your carbon footprint?
Muller: I am trying to get people to stop asking that question! It is very misleading.
...
van Diggelen: What should others be doing? If you could have President Obama’s ear for 5 minutes, what would you say?
Muller: Double (or more) our efforts to help China become more energy efficient. And equally important: develop “clean fracking” standards. Work with China to expedite and accelerate their switch from coal to natural gas. Devise market-based approaches that will guarantee that the developing world will apply clean methods to their natural gas production.
...
Muller: We need to act, but no need to panic. I see no tipping points that are scientifically valid...
Hurricane Sandy cannot be attributed to global warming. The rise over the oceans, in the last 50 years, has been about 0.5 degree C. That’s tiny! In those 50 years, sea level rose by 4 inches. So the high tide, if not for global warming, would not have been 14 feet but “only” 13 feet 8 inches. There was a similarly severe storm in 1938 (my parents lived through it out on Long Island). We should stop attributing all freak storms to climate change.
...
Unfortunately, there will always be scientists with some credentials that will exaggerate, maybe even convincing themselves. I recall back in the 1950s, when I was a kid in New York City, that the freak storms and changes in climate were attributed by some eminent scientists to atmospheric nuclear testing. (Maybe the freak storms and changes in climate should now be attributed to the nuclear test ban.) It is not science to list the bad things that have happened lately and claim that they “may be linked” to climate change. Even scientists, such as those who were passionately afraid of thermonuclear war, tend to see connections in things that aren’t there.
Climate change is real, and we need to do something to stop it. But it is not strong enough (0.6 C in the last 50 years) to be noticeable by individuals.

Steve Goreham on the ups and downs of modern environmentalism | Washington Times CommunitiesGoreham: I find that the scientific community is usually not very open to skeptical ideas about man-made climate change. Climate skeptics are labeled “deniers,” as in “holocaust deniers.” Most arguments against skeptical positions claim consensus, as in “97 percent of scientists agree with the theory of man-made warming,” or personally attack the skeptic as “a shill for energy companies,” rather than discuss the science.
My presentations at colleges attract strong student interest, but these presentations are usually sponsored by the economics departments. My requests for a debate on the science of global warming with science departments have been turned down by ten different universities in the Midwest.

The Great Hurricane of 1938 - Weather History of the Hurricane
The hurricane hit Long Island around 3:30 PM which was just a few hours before astronomical high tide. At this time the eye was about 50 miles across and the hurricane was about 500 miles wide (Francis, 1998). High tide was even higher than usual because of the Autumnal Equinox and new moon. Combined with winds gusting over 180 mph, few on eastern Long Island's south shore had a chance when the storm surge hit. Waves between 30 and 50 feet pounded the coastline with millions of tons of sea water, sweeping entire homes and families into the sea. The impact of the storm surge was so powerful that it was actually recorded on the earthquake seismograph at Fordham University in New York City (Francis, 1998). Most people did not even realize that a hurricane was upon them even as the waters began flooding their coastal homes. The hurricane produced storm tides of 14 to 18 feet across most of the Long Island and Connecticut coast, with 18 to 25 foot tides from New London east to Cape Cod. The destructive power of the storm surge was felt throughout the coastal community. Downtown Providence, Rhode Island was submerged under a storm tide of nearly 20 feet while downtown Westhampton Beach, a mile inland, was under 8 feet of water! Sections of Falmouth and New Bedford, Massachusetts were also submerged under as much as 8 feet of water.
Human role in climate change now virtually certain: leaked IPCC reportProfessor Stephan Lewandowsky, a researcher of climate change denial at the Cognitive Science Laboratories at the University of Western Australia, said the premature leak of the report was “dishonourable.”
“Science is one of the most transparent endeavours humans have ever developed. However, for the transparency to be effective, preliminary documents ought to remain confidential until they have been improved and checked through peer review,” he said in an emailed comment.
“The leak of a draft report by a reviewer who has signed a statement of confidentiality is therefore regrettable and dishonourable.”
“However, what is worse than the leak itself is the distortion of the content of the draft chapter by some deniers (no, they are not skeptics),” he said.
Prof Lewandowsky said that the report’s statement that humans have caused global warming was a “virtual certainty” meant it’s authors had 99% confidence in that view.
“That’s up from ‘very high confidence’ (90% certain) in the last report published in 2007,” he said. [Hey Stephan: How, specifically, were those 90% and 99% numbers calculated? What, specifically, changed between 2007 and now that accounts for the alleged 90% reduction in uncertainty?]
“In other words, the scientific case has become even stronger and has now reached a level of confidence that is parallelled only by our confidence in some very basic laws of physics, such as gravity or thermodynamics.”
To claim otherwise by cherry-picking part of a sentence out of context is absurd, he said.
“Although it illustrates the standard approach by which climate deniers seek to confuse the public. Climate denial lost intellectual respectability decades ago, and all that deniers have left now is to misrepresent, distort, or malign the science and the scientific process.”
Stephan LewandowskyFor the last few years, my new passion has been rock climbing...Most airlines [Wait, with the fate of my grandchildren allegedly hanging in the balance, this guy still takes unnecessary fuel-guzzling trips to climb on rocks?!] can handle that, whereas few take sailplanes as check-in luggage

IPCC – Full Speed Ahead « the Air VentIt is really unfortunate that they have chosen to report the Orsi borehole mathmagic as though it were a thermometer, but this is the paleoscience chapter so they need to put something in. That paper claimed a 0.8C/decade warming in the last two decades. Readers will recall that this was the paper which Steig famously claimed “proved” O’Donnell was wrong. Besides the whole field of borehole thermometery being ridiculous, it seems to me that the 0.8C/decade value is completely outside the realm of any possibility. I write that because it is 13 times the continental average and were the trend real, nearby thermometers would have obviously detected it.
US already has an energy policy, and that’s the problem - Columns - The Boston GlobeNOW FOR some good news: Over the past four years, every high-profile energy policy championed by the Obama administration has failed. The “clean” coal promised during his first campaign? Sent back to the primordial swamps from whence it came. Five million green jobs? Never happened. Electric cars? Sales have faltered for the over-hyped and over-subsidized Chevy Volt, causing GM to shutter the plant for weeks at a time. And don’t get me started on the billions taxpayers lost on bankrupt firms like Solyndra, A123, and Evergreen Solar.
But back in the land of competitive markets, where honest investment and innovation still matter, something very interesting has happened. According to the US Energy Information Agency, America’s natural gas reserves logged their biggest gain ever last year, reaching record levels. Oil production increased in 2012 for the fourth straight year, and America became a net exporter of refined petroleum products, including gasoline. Last August, the agency projected that by 2020 the United States will surpass Saudi Arabia and Russia to become the world’s largest producer of oil and natural gas liquids.

These are just two of the ways in which environmental laws and regulations are changing your life. Add to them the myriad regulations that will make it more expensive to heat your home this winter or cool it next summer. To hear the environmentalists tell it, these changes are creating jobs — green jobs. But all the evidence suggests that more jobs are being destroyed than created — all the while making the economy less productive and pushing up the prices of almost everything we buy.

Leaked IPCC Climate Report Excites Skeptics, Annoys Authors And Raises Questions About Process[Mann] There is nothing in the new IPCC report about solar forcing that isn't already well known from the peer-reviewed literature. I myself have published work in the journal Science just a few years ago on the importance of solar forcing for understanding long-term natural variability. Despite what climate change deniers would like people to think, paleoclimate scientists such as myself have thoroughly investigated the role of solar impacts on climate for decades ...
But my work, and indeed all work that I'm familiar with in this area, shows that solar forcing cannot possibly explain the warming of the past half century. In fact, solar forcing has been flat over the past fifty years during which we've seen the greatest amount of warming. There is NOTHING in the new IPCC report that in any way calls that conclusion into question.

Prof Piers Forster, Professor of Climate Change at the University of Leeds, said: "Although this may seem like a 'leak', the draft IPCC reports are not kept secret and the review process is open. The rationale in not disseminating the findings until the final version is complete, is to try and iron out all the errors and inconsistencies which might be inadvertently included. Personally, I would be happy if the whole IPCC process were even more open and public, and I think we as scientists need to explore how we can best match the development of measured critical arguments with those of the Twitter generation."

Draft IPCC report leaked (the evidence is so overwhelming it has to be kept secret!) « JoNova: Science, carbon, climate and taxWhat was the point of keeping the IPCC draft secret? The point is so the IPCC can control both the content and the PR. The IPCC wants a free kick, and they get one if the world doesn’t see how they arrive at the conclusion, and if critics can’t specifically point to errors or flaws until weeks after the giant press circus has done its megaphone production.
It’s how the media game works. First they release the “up and coming” scary headline. (Already done for AR5.) Critics can’t criticize what they can’t see.
Then they release the Summary with a three ring display of terrifying headlines. The black box that justifies it is shown off in all its mysterious glory: 4,000 experts labored for 5 years, produced 2,000 papers, 2 million emails, and rigorously, savagely dissected the science to give you this ominous, frightening message. Pay us your tithe! We will stop the Storms! The inner workings of the black box are held in the Sacred Vault. Those who question it are “deniers, nutters, conspiracy theorists, believe the moon landing was faked, are simultaneously paid by Exxon and suffer from ideological mental deficits — they wouldn’t accept any evidence anyway because they are old white male conservatives (that’s why we have to save the world by hiding the science — it simply is not a fair competition: the IPCC only has billions in funding, the support of the UN, most large banks, all western governments, most university money managers, the thought police in the press, the $176b carbon trading market, and the $257b renewables investment scene. Skeptics have wit, evidence, and the world wide web.)
Then finally they release the long paper with a few more headlines, but the circus has moved on. The people “know” the message. The press is bored, and the critics will need weeks to study the massive document in any case.

"I guess what I want to say is, I don't want to give them that power," she told me. "I'd rather fight like hell than give these evil motherfuckers the power to extinguish the desire to create life."
Lowering Your Carbon Impact -- What's Your Handprint? If you start tracking your carbon footprint, the data can be downright depressing. When Gregory Norris, the industrial ecologist who invented Handprinter, has his students at the Harvard School of Public Health measure their footprint, many tell him, "The planet would be better off if I never had been born."
Instead of tracking all the bad news about our carbon footprint, Handprinter puts a positive spin on our environmental impacts, tracking all the good we do. With Handprinter you measure every action you take that lowers your carbon footprint, and keep growing that number.
...A smart way to help keep the planet a bit cooler.
New paper finds a decrease in extreme weather in China from 1956-2000A recent paper published in the Hydrological Sciences Journal examines precipitation in southern China from 1956-2000 and finds precipitation has become both less extreme and less variable. Contrary to claims of climate alarmists, the paper adds to many others demonstrating that global warming decreases extreme weather including extreme precipitation, floods, droughts, and cyclone activity.
Furthermore, the authors find that the primary determinant of precipitation variability is the Sun, stating, "the annual precipitation in every sub-region in Guangdong province correlates with Sunspot Number with a 3-year lag."
Honeybee deaths: Climate-change explanation floated by study.scientists believe climate change may be causing all honeybee larvae to turn into workers instead of queen bees
People aren’t connecting extreme weather to climate change — at least, not on Google | GristGoogle is as close as we can get to gauging the public’s thinking. What we learn, then, is that extreme weather events don’t prompt an immediate, online connection to climate change; or, at least, no connection to the desire to learn more about the issue.
Neil Wagner: Climate Change Consensus Is Virtually UnanimousYour odds of knowing someone who believes aliens walk amongst us disguised as humans are twenty times greater than finding a climate skeptic in a group of climate scientists. Seriously.
UN Emission Reduction Units Fall to Record on EU Vote Wagers - BusinessweekUnited Nations Emission Reduction Units erased losses after falling to a record on speculation that the European Commission may vote to ban the carbon credits at a meeting of national climate experts tomorrow.
ERUs for December fell as much as 40 percent before closing unchanged. The European Union’s regulator postponed its vote on a revision of the bloc’s carbon registry rules from the next meeting of the Climate Change Committee, according to two people with knowledge of the matter. The Commission confirmed the delay in a statement published after the close of trading.
ERUs for December fell as low as 15 euro cents ($0.20) a metric ton on London’s ICE Futures Europe exchange, its biggest- ever fall and the lowest price for any carbon credit or permit since the second phase of the market started in 2008. The contract later closed at 25 cents.
‘Global Warming’ Is Now Officially Down the Memory Hole | NewsBusters.org[Marc Morano] The website Real Science pointed out that pleasant sunny days in the Spring are now being defined as “extreme weather.”...
The promoters of man-made climate fears have essentially declared that man-made climate change will cause many bad weather events to happen. And since bad weather events always happen, there is no shortage of “proof' of their predictions. They can always claim every bad weather event as evidence of their correctness.
There is no way anyone can falsify the global warming claims now because any weather event that happens “proves” their case, despite the fact that the current weather is neither historically unprecedented, nor unusual.
Action call on global warming is rejected | Cambridge News Tories in charge at Shire Hall have rebuffed calls for them to commit to tackling global warming – claiming the science is “contested”.
Climate Science Rule #1 : Never Look At Actual data | Real ScienceHad these geniuses bothered to look at actual data, they would know that winter snow extent is increasing
...
One might also remember that Texas had their snowiest winter on record last year. as did Alaska and much of Europe. Being a successful climate scientist requires that you don’t understand the limitations of computer hardware or software. A computer model is not an excuse for being a moron.
Multi-Year Stupidity | Real ScienceThe reason why Arctic sea ice summer minimums have been low recently is because there is a lot less thick multi-year ice than there was 20 years ago.
Experts say that this confirms global warming, but it has little to do with it. Most multi-year ice is lost during the winter, not the summer. The ice gets blown by strong winter winds out into the North Atlantic, where it melts. During the winters from 1988-1996, most of the multi-year ice was lost.
People who get hysterical about the location of the ice edge in September, are complete morons.

Climate Craziness of the Week – Mark Hertsgaard embarrasses himself with ‘The End of Pasta’ | Watts Up With That?Clearly, US wheat production is healthy, increasing, and shows no sign of the 5.5% decrease, and if anything it seems to indicate there is a positive effect from temperature on wheat yield. Improved farming practices and improved wheat seed stocks have helped too. If I really wanted to embarrass these two guys I could add the Keeling curve for CO2 also, and point out that crop yields increase with increases in CO2 as well.
How do people like this get a broad voice to such opinions that don’t stand up under the simplest of tests? I don’t know, but you can write them here to ask them...
Jane Lubchenco to Leave NOAA Helm - ScienceInsiderin today's message, Lubchenco hinted that the decision to leave was influenced in part by the strain of trying to maintain a bicoastal family life [I'll bet all that cross-country bicycle riding got old after a while]; her husband, marine scientist Bruce Menge, remained at Oregon State University after Lubchenco took the job in 2009.
Baltimore TV meteorologists weigh in against global warming - baltimoresun.comSpurred by a recent article in Rolling Stone, some Baltimore television meteorologists are weighing in against global climate change -- and are drawing some criticism for it.
WBAL-TV's Tony Pann shared the article, which calls some TV meteorologists "climate crackpots", on his Facebook page. He, along with others like WMAR-TV's Mike Masco and former WMAR meteorologist Justin Berk, argue climate change is an unproven theory.
UN climate summits 'more about exotic locales than anything else': Climate Depot's Morano: 'The United Nations knows how to throw a party'Morano: 'I've been to Bali, I've been to Cancun, I've been to Kenya, S. Africa twice, to Rio, South America -- exotic locations, very nice places. I've stayed at five-star resorts on the ocean. The UN picks exotic locales in order to attract people to come because not many people would want to go to one in Trenton, NJ' -- 'Morano notes that while he worked for the U.S. Senate, his round-trip, business-class airline ticket (paid for by U.S. taxpayers) was $16,000 in 2006'

Climate Change Threatens Ski Industry’s Livelihood - NYTimes.comIn the Rockies, where early conditions have also been spotty, average winter temperatures are expected to rise as much as 7 degrees by the end of the century. Park City, Utah, could lose all of its snowpack by then.
In changing climate, ski industry should take action, report says | GreenBiz.com"The bitter irony is that the response to climate change is to use a lot of energy and further cannibalize the climate. Surely there is a better approach than that,” said Auden Schendler, vice president of sustainability for Aspen Ski Company, about contemporary snowmaking.
